APRIL EVENTS & DESCRIPTIONS
AROUND THE WORLD Fri., Apr. 3, 1:30-2:30pm
Join traveler Ralph Driscoll for another chapter of his worldwide adventures. This time he will chronicle his journey from various
destinations such as Cairo, Bangkok and Manila.
THE MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE OF RODIN Mon., Apr. 6, 1-2:45pm $6/1
Along with Michelangelo, Rodin is considered one of the great sculptors of Western art. A contemporary of the then radical
Impressionists, Rodin also transformed sculpture, creating works of art that communicate with us on both an emotional and spiritual level
from The Kiss to The Thinker to The Burghers of Calais. Popular art historian, Joan Hart will provide an overview of his career,
highlighting Rodin’s works at museums throughout the world including the Rodin Museum in Paris and Washington, D.C.‘s Hirshhorn
Sculpture Garden. His romantic and professional relationship with sculptor Camille Claudel will also be discussed.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE POEM? Fri., Apr. 17, 1-2:30pm
Do you remember the works of William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou, Edgar Allen Poe and Elizabeth Barrett Browning? In honor of
National Poetry Month, join Aurora Hills Senior Center Director LauRae Upchurch in a poetry night event. Recite your own written work
or share an all time favorite. Each poet will have a chance to orate their poem of choice to the group.
EARTH FRIENDLY GARDENING Mon., Apr. 20, 1:30-2:30pm
In honor of Earth Day, master gardener Carol Kilroy will lead a program on green gardening. Some of the topics to be discussed are
composting, grasscycling, green landscaping and native plants.
SPRING IT ON! Mon., Apr. 27, 1-2pm
Ladies and gents, it's spring and time to clean, shop, create and decorate. Got any great ideas or plans to share? Bring your gardening,
fashion, cooking and travel ideas to our first ever “Spring it On” event.
RESTAURANT HEALTH INSPECTIONS AND FOOD SAFETY Wed., Apr. 29, 1:30-2:30pm
Ever wonder what food inspectors are looking for at your favorite restaurant? Would you like some food handling safety tips of your own?
Department of Human Services program manager Kimberly Brunette will teach you what to look for when dining out or hosting a dinner
party of your own.
LOOKING AHEAD TO MAY
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR RETIREMENT ASSETS Wed., May 13, 1-2pm
Stocks, bonds, CDs, oh my…we are in an ever-changing world technologically and financially. Be savvy and learn about asset classes in
this new financial landscape of the times. Financial advisor Terrence L. of Merrill Lynch, will address the changes in investing and money
matters.
CONTINUUM OF CARE Wed., May 20, 1:30-2:30pm
Home care, skilled nursing, assisted living, post-hospital rehab – there are so many options for help and for different living arrangements
as you age. You or a loved one may need some type of assistance at some point. Professionals from Synergy Home Care and other
Arlington agencies including Capital Caring and Virginia Hospital Center will explain the different services available and answer
questions about costs and insurance coverage.
AN AFTERNOON WITH THE SULTANAS Fri., May 22, 1:30-2:30pm
The Sultanas, a dance troupe based out of the Lee Senior Center, are coming to Aurora Hills! Watch them shimmy and glide through space

WALTER REED SENIOR CENTER HAPPENINGS
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DOCENT Thurs., Apr. 9, 1-2pm
Art galleries, museums, and zoos, oh my.. Barbara Miller, experienced docent, will discuss the history of houses built in colonial
times, architecture and a discussion of the inhabitants who lived in these house. Among those to be discussed are Tudor Place,
Dunbarton House and Carlyle House and Anderson house, which is not a federal period house but has a great history of the Society
of Cincinnati. Also covered will be what a docent is and does, and the process of becoming a docent, and what opportunities may
be available in the thriving and cultural rich community of NoVA and DC.
NATURAL FOODS Thurs., Apr. 16, 1-2pm
Spring is a great time to renew yourself and take care of your body. Celebrate the Earth by learning how to eat more naturally. Get
rid of the processed foods and get some helpful tips to incorporate natural food into your everyday diet. You will feel better for it!
Presented by Katie Strong, registered dietician, Virginia Cooperative Extension.
BIRDING Tues., Apr. 21, 6:30-7:30pm
Spring is in the air and the birds are singing their songs. Learn about different types of birds in Northern Virginia, nesting habits,
courtship behaviors, and song/bird identification. Jennifer Soles, Arlington County Naturalist will provide this fun and interactive
session.
