Vermont Farmstead Cheese Co. www.vermontfarmstead.com 802‐457‐9992 Job Definitions and Responsibilities Herdsman The Herdsman has overall responsibility for cows and milk supply produced at the farm in South Woodstock. The Herdsman has primary hands on responsibility for the maintenance of the dairy cow herd, farm function and equipment maintenance. Herdsman will report directly to Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company is a transparent company working with farmstead products that start with the farm and the cows. We are committed to producing superior quality milk to produce fine cheeses for consumers and to providing outstanding job satisfaction for our employees. We milk a herd of 60 registered Holsteins, Red&White Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshires, Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorns, in addition to raising young stock. The ideal candidate would be capable of directing as well as be directed in doing any and all work on the farm as a team or alone. Specifically: 1. Coordinate and maintain VFCC on farm milk supply 2. Maintain proper herd health, cow care and strive to produce high quality milk. 3. Assist with visitors to the farm. 4. Be the face and backbone of VFCC’s dairy herd and milk supply. 5. Coordinate staffing needs for 365 day a year milk production. 6. Communicate to the company, industry trends with recommendations on how to capitalize on them for the benefit of the company. 7. Develop and maintain relationships with veterinarian, nutritionist and vendors needed for achieving a consistent high quality milk supply. 8. Create and/or maintain DHIA records, registrations, herd records, company reports, inventories, budget and fiscal responsibility. 9. Maintain proper milking routines and sanitation protocols necessary to producing high quality milk for cheese making. 10. Execute herd health, reproduction and AI breeding programs in line with the goals of VFCC. 11. Maintain the grounds of the farm and creamery and assist in coordinating events at the farm in South Woodstock. 12. Coordinate marketing opportunities for the dairy herd as needed. 13. Travel for company business as needed and represent the company in a thrifty, professional manner. 14. Maintain a neat and clean working environment for cows and employees. 15. Approach the CEO with issues, concerns, suggestions with employment, satisfaction, or cow related issues or efficiencies.
