May 16 Spring Auction 5:00pm A Message from the Principal Dear Parents, I am so proud of our upper grade students! They have been “on the road” and have represented SAS so well. • The 6th graders spent five days at Calvin Crest Camp, and the staff there was impressed with their enthusiasm, participation, and cooperation. Many thanks to Mrs. Garrett and Mrs. Silverio for preparing their students for the camp experience and to the parents who left their families for a week to chaperone our students. What a gift to our 6th graders! • The 7th graders enjoyed a rich and rewarding day in Monterey with an aquarium visit, tide pooling, and other activities. Our gratitude to Mrs. Riddle and Mrs. Cornwell-Macias for Page | 1 organizing and facilitating this trip and to the parents who assisted as chaperones. It was a wonderful day by Monterey Bay! • It was an honor for me to attend the 8th grade trip to Los Angeles. Our 8th graders were polite and cooperative and asked such intelligent questions at each site. A big thank you to Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Cochran for planning and coordinating this special educational and fellowship experience for our soon-to-be graduates, and our gratitude to the parents who left their families for two days to assist as chaperones. "The more loving you are to the young, the greater will be the effects of God's grace." - St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers Live, Jesus, in our hearts forever. Susannah Nelson. Free Dress Fundraiser for Firefighter Pete Dern 4th grader Luke Orlando would like to help Mr. Pete Dern, the firefighter who recently fell through the roof of a burning garage and for whom our community has been praying at our Monday Prayer Service and School Mass. Luke's uncle is a firefighter, and Luke wants to be a fireman when he grows up. He was very sad to hear of Mr. Dern's situation, and he wants to do something for him and his family. He would like to host a "free dress for $1" day on May 6. Firefighters (members of Station 11) will be in the front parking lot beginning at 7:45 A.M. that morning to greet students as they enter. They are bringing a fire truck as well; it will be in the front of the school in the blacktop area through which students walk to enter the front gates. Luke's uncle will speak to our students about the fundraiser at our May 4 Prayer Service. Students need to give their dollar to their teachers, and they should follow the guidelines under Casual Dress Day in the Parent-Student Handbook for their dress on May 6. We are so proud of Luke for his desire to help the Dern family! Major Calendar Dates for Next School Year As you plan ahead for the 2015-2016 school year, please make note of these dates. Prevention and Treatment for Head Lice Head lice often occur in homes, day care centers, elementary schools, and preschools; children can also get lice from family members and playmates. It is essential to follow thorough procedures to check for and treat lice in the home. Below are some key steps to follow. Please also note the checklist from Dr. Nitwit attached to this packet. To check your child’s head for signs of lice: a. In a well-lit location, start by sectioning the hair into 4 sections. b. Starting at the bottom, use the pointed end of a fine-toothed rattail comb to pull tiny sections of hair and look closely for nits on the hair shaft, about 1-2 inches from the scalp. c. If you find a nit, remove it by tightly squeezing the nit between 2 fingers and sliding it off the end of the hair shaft. Treatment options include: a. Comb your child’s hair every day with a nit comb for two weeks. Nit combs are metal, not plastic, and have long teeth; they are available at your local pharmacy. b. Use a special shampoo for lice treatment (e.g. RID, Nix, etc.). c. Dr. Nitwit is a local professional office dedicated to lice treatment and prevention. d. Speak with your child’s physician regarding suggested treatment. e. Wash, vacuum, wipe down , and bag the linens, carpet, counters, furniture, and pillows. f. Lice dislike tea tree oil and mint scents; keep this in mind when purchasing products. It has always been the mission of the Administration to maintain affordable tuition. Thanks to your hard work and that of our Parent Teacher Organization fundraisers and the Scrip Program, St. Anthony’s School is able to offer its families one of the lowest tuition rates in the Diocese of Fresno. All associated costs relating to salaries and employee benefits will increase approximately 4-5% next year. In addition, our annual Office of Catholic Education assessment and testing fees are being increased. We do understand that any increase will be felt by our families. In order to offset your tuition costs, we highly encourage every family to use the Scrip Program. Many families earn months of FREE tuition each year….by using the SCRIP PROGRAM! This program was designed to help our families decrease their tuition cost. Everyone has the opportunity to save at least one month of tuition by using the program at the minimum level. Your savings increase as your use of scrip increases. This is an effortless way to help offset your tuition. If you have any questions on how to better utilize this money-saving tool, please ask. Your participation in the Scrip program will reduce your tuition cost. I encourage anyone who is anticipating this increase to cause a financial hardship to contact me. Financial tuition assistance is available upon request.
