Atherton SHS says NO! to Bullying & Violence
On Friday 20th of March our students and staff signed the pledge to say ‘No’ to bullying and
violence. Students dressed up in orange in support of the student council who co-ordinated
the National day against Bullying and Violence at Atherton High. The students looked

Year 6 into 7 Evening

was held on Thursday night
where large numbers of
parents and students
attended our Year 6 into 7
Information Evening. The
evening gave parents the
overview of Atherton SHS
as well as opportunity to
ask our staff questions
about the transition from
primary school into high
school.
Valuing Education Program
On Thursday our
had Indigenous
students fortunate to have a visit from Bianca and Sarah from DATSIMA and from Mr Trevor Tim (a motivational
speaker from ‘Success with Attitude’). Students were treated to topics and advice in:

15 minutes a day do something positive - ”Google it challenge”

Talk positive to self, visualise your future
·
Focus on your future
·
Attitude is everything
·
To succeed you have to fail sometimes
·
Don’t have to be sick to get better
·
It takes 30 days to create a habit
Year 7 Life Stories
During this first Term in Year 7, we have been learning about identity, culture and a sense of belonging, and how this can
be established through the stories we share and the language we use to represent ourselves and our experiences. Starting
High School provides us with the perfect opportunity to get to know someone else in our school community.
We want to know more about the people in our SCHOOL! Year 7 students have been invited to help construct an identity
wall for our classroom through the contribution of two ‘bricks’ by writing a biography for two people who are part of your
Atherton State High School community. Here are some samples of stories from our very talented students.
Belinda Hampton HOD English
The student’s task was to: “Construct and write a biography for two people who are part of your Atherton
State High School community. One of these people can be a friend that you might already know through
your primary school. The other person needs to be someone you have only met or learnt about since coming
to high school.”

Biography of Gil Jansen
Mr Jansen (also known as Gil) is a man who likes his curry hot, like
really spicy. I first met Gil when he was playing cricket for the
Atherton Crusaders Cricket team with my dad in 2010. He is a very
serious cricketer, an opening fast bowler with a good batting average
and a fast Yorker.
Gil Jansen was born in 1967; in the town of Rotterdam, Netherlands.
This is in Europe! When he moved to Australia he finished high school
and went to the University of Queensland to study teaching. In 1994
he married Lucinda and had three children, Maria, Vern and Chad.
He worked as a teacher in many different places including Charters
Towers but nothing compares to his job now at Atherton High
School. For the last ten years Gil has been the Atherton High School’s Responsible Behaviour Officer. He loves his
job and feels he makes a difference. He is known as the funny man by colleagues and students, making jokes at
parades and school events. Gil has performed as a professional comedian for years at functions all over but loves it
best when he performs for his friends.
Gil has a love for animals but no animal can compete with his love for his Belgian Shepherds, Samson and Bella
who are about to have puppies. Gil loves a lot of different food, he loves Steak and Asian, but Indian is his favourite.
Lucky for Gil the man who loves his curry hot and spicy, his son works at Khans Curries so now he can have curry on
demand.

Year 7 Life Stories
Biography of Joyce Cahill
Joyce Cahill was born and bred here in Atherton and has spent almost half
of her lifetime working at Atherton State High School. She has seen many
children turn into adults and then go into the world Atherton State High
School with a good education and fantastic memories. She is nice and kind
and it was really great to interview her.
Joyce Cahill is 68 and has worked at Atherton State High School for 30 years
and saw all of her three children graduate from Atherton State high school.
She has been born and bred here and her family was as well; in fact her
father was an Atherton pioneer.
Joyce likes Atherton because she has a lot of family and friends here and
she knows the people and she knows that she is able to trust all of them. Joyce said, “My family was the best thing
that ever happened to me”. Joyce got married and had three awesome children that she loves. She has six
grandchildren and loves them very much.
In Joyce’s spare time, she works at the Atherton Turf Club races, she likes visiting her grandchildren, pruning her
garden and watching cricket. Last holidays, she went to a Brisbane Heat game at the GABBA cricket ground and she
said that it was an experience she will never forget.
Even though it is stressful sometimes, when Joyce leaves the High school the one thing she will remember most
about Atherton State High School are the amazing people she worked with during her 30 years at Atherton State
High School.

Let’s Meet Lauren Mather
Have you ever dreamed of achieving a junior black belt in Taekwondo in primary school? Lauren Mather did and
fulfilled her vision. On the 21st of January she fought everyone in her class, and after 4 years she accomplished her
dream. She is now currently trying to achieve the black belt.
Lauren was born on the Tablelands, and grew up in Tolga. She was a student at the Tolga State School, finishing
year six in 2014. She enjoys cooking, climbing trees and drawing, as well as being very good at sports. Although
her passion is Taekwondo, she puts her heart and soul into any sport and always succeeded. Her love of being active realised another dream of hers, when she became sports captain of
Tandara, her sports team at Tolga State School.
Lauren is intelligent, crafty and is currently a respected student of Atherton High School. Academically, Lauren enjoyed and excelled in art at primary school. Lauren enjoys all types of are and will put time and effort in
to any creative craft that she creates. She aspires to become a famous
fashion designer in Tolga when she is older.
From Taekwondo to her creative side, Laurens focus and determination
will help her succeed in becoming the woman she wants and deserves to
be and nothing can stop her from believing.

Generous donation to ASHS Breakfast Club
from the Atherton Lionesses
Atherton Lionesses recently invited Chappy Michelle Davies-Griffith to be a guest speaker at one of their
monthly meetings. Michelle gave a very informative talk on the Student Services she is able to deliver in her role
as School Chaplain at Atherton High School & Herberton School. She spoke of her work with the Breakfast Club
and not only how it provides a nourishing meal for students before school commences but how it also may act
as a meeting place for students. The Lionesses were very impressed with her other initiatives including a Shoe
Bank at Herberton and Homework Clubs at both schools.
As a community service, our club decided to donate $500 in IGA vouchers towards
assisting with costs associated with providing these valuable student focused programs.
