Congratulations Eacham! Last week’s massive parade acknowledged the winners and age champions for the interhouse cross country in April. Congratulations to Eacham who took out their second carnival for the year, and well done to all the age champions who received their ribbons and medallions. School vice captain Oliver Phillips was presented with the interschool trophy after our team returned victorious from the district carnival in Ravenshoe. Thanks to Mr Ray Byrne from the Avenue of Honour for coming to the parade and presenting the winners with their prizes. Grin & Tonic Performance This week a travelling Shakespearian performance group from Brisbane, the Grin & Tonic Troupe performed Sunburn for the Year 8s, Livid (a retelling of Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello) for the senior students and a Year 10s watched a performance that explored love and relationships in Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. After each performance the two young actors had time for a question and answer session. Visiting Guest Author We were lucky enough to have Barry Jonsberg visit ASHS on Wednesday to run a writer’s workshop in creative writing for 18 of our students across all year levels. He explored the way stories take place, how you can develop characters and story lines, and the process involved in refining a story with the students . He was funny, entertaining and engaging! Carinya Fundraiser - Cairns Brass Spectacular The annual fundraiser for Carinya was once again a success with a huge crowd coming to listen to Cairns Brass, one of Australia’s finest brass bands. The combined Atherton SHS /Bentley Park College band performed a spectacular set in the lead up, as did the combined primary school band. Thank you to the staff and our students for the outstanding night Atherton High School’s New Sports Shirt Atherton State High School is introducing a sports shirt. The sports shirt has been designed by staff, students and parents and represents each of the four houses. The sports shirts can be worn any day of the week with the everyday school shorts and are only available by order. Copies of the letter and ordering process has been attached to previous newsletters. A sample size range of shirts is available from the school tuckshop this week, with the first orders being finalised shortly. Interact Club News A call was put out to all students to become involved in our Interact Club by our Rotary Student Exchange students Kristina and Ana. The next meeting is Friday recess 1 in the conference room in A block. Red Rover between Prefects and Juniors Junior Secondary News – NAPLAN! We wish all of our year 7 and 9 students the very best of luck for NAPLAN. NAPLAN occurs nation-wide for all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will complete this test Tuesday 12th of May, Wednesday the 13th of May and Thursday 14th of May. Tips and tricks… Make sure that you have a filling breakfast in the morning. This will help with your concentration and to sustain your energy throughout the day. If you forget to have breakfast, sleep in and don’t have time or just need a little top up, there will be a special year 7 and 9 only breakfast club each morning before NAPLAN. This service is provided by Chappy Michelle and she will be assisted by our year 8 Junior Secondary Leaders. Breakfast Club will be in the Hall from 8am. Reminders… Don’t forget to bring your pencil (not pacer), blue and/or black pen, eraser, sharpener, and calculator for Thursday’s calculator allowed numeracy test. The standardised tests are given to students in the literacy strands of Reading, Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and also in Numeracy. Students have been preparing for the tests for months and they will be completing them in the hall. Parents can assist with NAPLAN preparations by ensuring that their children have had a good night’s sleep the night before the test and that they have eaten a healthy breakfast on the mornings of the test. Spirit Of Youth Concert: Our annual celebration of our student’s music talent is being next Thursday May 21. The Spirit of Youth concert showcases performances from our music classes, from Year 9 acts through to the Year 12’s. There are also recitals from our instrumental music students and their teacher Miss Anthony. The Spirit of Youth concert is being held in the hall - one concert is for current students and guests from our primary schools at midday, followed by an extended concert in the evening from 7:00pm - 8:30pm for all members of the Atherton SHS community. QCS Prep: Preparations for this year’s QCS test continue for Year 12s as they work with Matt Rigby this Monday in the Hall. P&C Meeting: The next general meeting of the Atherton SHS Parents and Citizens Association is scheduled for 7:00pm this Tuesday night. All parents and interested community members are encouraged to attend.
