St. Petersburg, FL 33705 T. 727.825.1100 StAnthonys.com April 2015 Dear St. Anthony’s Triathlon Supporter, Thank you for being part of the St. Anthony’s Triathlon weekend in St. Petersburg. We are so proud of this event and all of the wonderful athletes, both professional and amateur, who have made plans to participate. This year marks the 32nd St. Anthony’s Triathlon, the 21st Meek & Mighty Triathlon and the 2nd St. Anthony’s Sprint Distance Triathlon, which last year proved to be a great alternative for athletes wanting to race the same course as the Olympic distance triathlon but a shorter distance. Active.com recently selected St. Anthony’s Triathlon as one of the 12 “must-do” triathlons for 2015, calling it “one of the best early-season triathlons in the U.S.” Once you experience the warmth and charm of our city and the beautiful waterfront that serves as the backdrop for your race, we know you will agree. More than 3,500 individual athletes and 90 relay teams are expected to compete in all the races this year. As in years past, St. Anthony’s Triathlon will feature a large and talented pro field with past St. Anthony’s winners, Olympians and world champions vying for a portion of the more than $65,000 prize purse. The Triathlon has seen extraordinary growth since 1984 and has become one of the premier races in the United States. The first St. Anthony’s Triathlon started with just 600 competitors. Last year, athletes from more than 40 states, the District of Columbia and 10 countries competed. In January, USA Triathlon (USAT) named St. Anthony’s Triathlon as the Florida Regional Championship event for the USAT Championship in Milwaukee on August 8. Just as the Triathlon has grown, St. Anthony’s Hospital has seen extraordinary growth since it opened in 1931. We have continued our legacy of providing the community with quality, compassionate care which fuels our mission to improve the health of those in St. Petersburg. St. Anthony’s is honored to be a part of this fast-paced and competitive weekend of athletic events. We thank you for making this part of your competition schedule. Yours in good health, Michael Mikurak, MD Chairman of the Board St. Anthony’s Hospital William G. You will have full access to your bike on race morning, but will not be allowed to remove it from the transition area until the start of the race. RACE DAY PARKING: For a nominal fee, race day parking is available at four downtown parking venues: • Mahaffey Theatre – First Street and Fourth Avenue South • Progress Energy Park – First Avenue South and First Street • Progress Energy Garage – First Avenue South and Second Street • Sundial – Second Street and Second Avenue North RACE NUMBERS: There are three race numbers in your race packet that you are required to display during the event: The adhesive bicycle frame number must be attached to your bike with the race number clearly visible from both sides of the bike. Do not affix the number to your bike frame until after you’re prepared to enter the transition area on Saturday. Lost bike numbers cannot be replaced! The small adhesive helmet number must be worn on the front of your bike helmet. The run number must be displayed during the run segment on the front of your body. Pin your run number to your shirt, swimsuit or race belt with the four safety pins provided in your race packet. BODY MARKING: Body marking will take place from 4:45 to 6:45am on Sunday at both entrances to the transition area. You will not be permitted in the transition area on race day without your wristband and your body marks. Do not apply body lotion or sunscreen until after you have been body marked. Only athletes who are wearing their wristbands and are body marked will be allowed access. Any bike not properly displaying the bike frame number will be removed from the transition area during the swim. You will not be allowed access to the transition area to reclaim your bicycle and gear until after the last athlete has started the run (approximately noon). RELAY TEAM TRANSITION AREA ACCESS: To reduce congestion, only the relay team cyclist will have access to the transition area. Relay teams must pass the timing chip to their teammates in the holding areas just outside the transition area following each segment. The relay team cyclist may secure all personal items belonging to the swimmer and runner at the relay team’s bike rack. TIMING CHIPS: You are required to pick up your timing chip during packet pickup. Each chip is encoded with your specific registration data, so do not trade your chip with another athlete. The chip must be affixed to either ankle prior to the swim start and must be worn during the entire event. Athletes are responsible for crossing the timing mats at the end of each segment (e.g. swim finish) and for the safe return of the chip at the finish line. Relay team members must pass the chip to their teammate after completing their segment of the race. Crossing the timing mats as you re-enter the transition area to reclaim your gear with your chip in place will erase your transition times. Chip owners: Please provide race management with your chip number at Athlete Check-in. 6 SWIM CAP: The swim cap placed in your race packet must be worn during the swim. Do not trade your swim cap with another athlete, as the caps are color-coded to assist race management in organizing you at the swim start. YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF YOU START IN THE WRONG WAVE. WETSUITS: The use of wetsuits during the swim will be allowed if the water temperature on race morning is 78.0 degrees or less. If the water temperature exceeds 78 degrees but is less than 84 degrees, an athlete may wear a wetsuit but will be ineligible for awards and USAT national ranking points. Additionally, athletes choosing to wear a wetsuit in water above 78 degrees will be required to start in the last wave so that they can be scored appropriately so as to be ineligible for awards. For Pro athletes, a water temperature of 68 degrees or lower will be wetsuit legal. A water temperature measurement will be conducted on Saturday to forecast the likely water temperature on race day and the likelihood of whether wetsuits will be allowed. SWIM START: The swim starts at North Shore Beach, approximately 1/3 mile north of the transition area. To get to North Shore Beach on race morning, walk north on North Shore Drive to Twelfth Avenue North East. Turn right (east) into parking area and walk out toward waterfront. Participants should proceed to North Shore Beach for the start no later than 6:30am. Be sure you start with other competitors wearing the same color swim cap and in your correct division. Failure to wear the official swim cap or starting in a wave other than the one you’ve been assigned will result in your disqualification. SWIM COURSE: Follow the orange buoys during the entire swim course. Yellow buoys mark the two turns. Keep all buoys on your left by swimming to the right of each buoy. Athletes who cut any portion of the swim course will be disqualified. For your safety, certified water safety personnel will be monitoring the swim course with kayaks and rescue craft. The swim course ends at the steps leading up the seawall in Vinoy Park. Swim cut-off will be 70 minutes from the start of the last wave. TRANSITION AREA CONDUCT: For safety reasons, you will not be permitted to ride your bike in or out of the transition area. You must walk or run while on the grass in the transition area. Please watch out for other athletes as you move through the transition area and follow the instructions of race officials and volunteers. BIKE COURSE: Each athlete is required to wear an approved helmet during the bike segment. You must have your helmet securely fastened on your head before you mount and dismount your bike. Drafting and blocking are not permitted during the race. USAT officials will monitor the bike course and strictly enforce these rules. BIKE BOTTLE EXCHANGE: One water bottle exchange station will be located midway through the bike course just past the golf course. Please discard all empty bike bottles and sports nutrition wrappers at this station. This will make our cleanup efforts much easier. Discarded bottles or gear will not be returned after the race. BIKE COURSE: All bikes must be back in the transition area by 12:30pm or you will be disqualified. RUN COURSE: Water stations are located at the run start and at every mile on the run course. Each station will be stocked with water and Gatorade. You must complete the entire course and circle the traffic cones at the run turnaround. A timing mat will be placed at the turnaround to ensure each athlete completes the entire run course. FINISH: The run course officially closes at 2pm. All participants still on the course at this time will be asked to move to the sidewalk. The finish clock will remain on and times recorded until 2:30pm. Participants who continue on their own will assume all risks and must adhere to local traffic laws. Official individual finishers will receive a finisher’s medal. 8 9 DROPPING OUT: Please notify a race official and return your timing chip at the finish line if you drop out of the race. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT: Unsportsmanlike conduct or the verbal abuse of any race official or volunteer during the race or at any time during the event weekend will result in your immediate disqualification. TIMING AND RESULTS: Official race results will be posted prior to the awards presentation. Please report any discrepancy to a race official prior to the start of the awards presentation. Athletes who do not wear the timing chip during the entire event will not be scored. Please note that the clock at the finish line reflects the start time of the first swim wave. MEDICAL CARE: St. Anthony’s will provide comprehensive medical care for all participants during the event. The biggest risk to athletes during the race is the potential of heat-related injuries associated with inadequate hydration prior to and during the event. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout race weekend. COURSE SAFETY: Because St. Anthony’s Triathlon is conducted within an urban environment, it is virtually impossible to keep the entire course closed to vehicular traffic. Be aware of your surroundings, obey the instructions of the traffic control officers and volunteers and be considerate of others during the competition. AWARDS PARTY: The awards party begins as soon as you cross the finish line. Be sure to stick around for live music, fruit, snacks, juice, pizza, cold Sea Dog Brewing Co. beer and Columbia Restaurant’s famous black beans and rice and Cuban bread. The awards presentation will begin at 12pm for the Professionals and Elite Amateurs. The general awards ceremony will follow. The top 10 finishers in each division will be presented with a framed watercolor print depicting scenes from St. Anthony’s Triathlon.
