Despite competition from the lovely spring weather, over seventy folk came from as far afield as Norwich, Yarmouth, Beccles, Ipswich, Stowmarket, and even Brightlingsea to see the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group’s displays, and to try to trace their ancestry. Frank Huxley brought along his collection of old postcards of the Leiston area, Jackie Linnell displayed her family tree, and Janet Huckle was constantly in demand with her advice on how to date old photographs – several folk brought their own family photos along for her opinion and identification. Visitors and members alike were seen trawling through surveys of graveyards seeking their forebears, while others looked for war heroes in the Group’s comprehensive collection of books about local war memorials. The computers were busy with visitors searching the genealogy websites, and there was much interest in the Leiston Great War Memorial Book which members of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group had researched and produced. And all this was against the backdrop of the Long Shop's own splendid WW1 exhibition. The Long Shop Volunteers were kept busy providing drinks and delicious homemade soup, and donations raised nearly £120 for Long Shop Museum funds. The Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group meets at Leiston Community Centre at 7.30pm on the 3rd Monday of the month, and the Group's Research Centre in the Old Council Chamber in Leiston is free to members and non-members from 10 to 12 on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. For full details of the Group see: http:// aldevalleyfamilyhistorygroup.onesuffolk.net/ Florence’s Fundraising Florence Maynard wanted to do some fund-raising for comic relief, so on Wednesday 11th March, after school, she did a tombola but she had lots of prizes left over. So on the Thursday she stood outside the Factory shop and raised even more money, a total of £155.00! A big thank you to Tesco who donated £20 and the Original Factory Shop. Also three friends of Florence's held a cake stall and raised £60.00 after school on the Wednesday. Fantastic effort girls. Thank you to everyone who came and supported these girls! She took part in a game of rugby with the students; something that she is doing at each school; aimed at driving up the participation in the sport – particularly girls. The England team’s official national anthem singer, set up a girl’s squad for rugby as a pupil of Framlingham College and currently plays full back for Rosslyn Park Ladies. The pupils had a great time and Laura said “It’s really special to be involved in a project like this.” Smash Show “Hairspray” a Fantastic Success This week saw the school’s production of West End Musical “Hairspray”. Months of rehearsals came to fruition on the 3rd, 4th and 5th March at Leiston Film Theatre in 3 sell out nights. The audience was amazed by the talents of our Year 7-13 pupils, and a couple of surprise cameo roles from a few teachers, as the 1960 story based in Baltimore, was retold in an explosion of colour and song. The show was directed by Donna Goodwin, Head of Performing Arts, and musically directed by Julie Medler and Ben Scarce, and choreographed by Becky Smith and Hannah Merrett. The school was wowed by the local community who showed their support, making this return visit by the school to the local theatre, a huge success. Students and audience are now excited with the prospect of the next Alde valley Academy production. Judo News February junior players of the month! The market towns and rural countryside of East Suffolk are home to one of the UK's most diverse and vibrant local food economies - it is job-rich and innovative. When combined with the beautiful countryside that surrounds these settlements, the local food economy has much to offer both local communities and visitors. The arts can add to this mix : they offer another layer; another way of experiencing a place and its surroundings. The Spring Festival seeks to bring together these different threads - of food, farming, landscape and the arts - in ways which are engaging and entertaining. It celebrates the food and landscape identity of East Suffolk, both locally and globally - the latter by forging links with other food and landscape based economies in other parts of the world. Suffolk has much to offer. Its local communities have long known that. More people are also coming to visit the area as tourists. Food and landscape provide a strong identity for the area - they help to define it. The arts add to this - a bit of extra spice in the mix ! A highlight of this year's Spring Festival will be the Festival Exhibition and new works by some of Suffolk and the UK's leading artists - including painters, sculptors and chair makers. It is particularly exciting to be showing a new series of painting by Maggi Hambling - including the huge work Wall of Water (blue and gold) The Alde Valley Spring Festival Residency Programme This started in 2014 and provides workspaces for a limited number of artists, musicians and writers each year. Recipients of residency awards in 2015 include the painters Roger Hardy, Tessa Newcomb, Daisy Cook and Jelly Green. George Farrow-Hawkins has been given a Drawing Residency and Emma Green has been given the 2015 Fidelity Cranbrook Residency Award for Painting. Freddy Morris, Tobias Ford and Alice-Andrea Ewing have all been given Sculpture Workshop Residencies. The Festival is also supporting the work of local bronze caster and sculptor Craig Hudson. Their work will be on show in the Spring Festival Exhibition. Easter is behind us and the shimmering mirage of Summer lies ahead but now we are entering the most exciting time of the year. Spring. The earliest of James’ crops to emerge from the field just behind the shop, is the wonderfully tasty Heritage White Sprouting Broccoli. Cut early every morning, it couldn’t be fresher. It is closely followed by the first of the British cauliflowers. It’s still a bit chilly up here and a dish of piping hot cauliflower cheese would go down well at teatime. The star of the show though is Heritage Rhubarb. Corrina has two wonderful recipe cards for Rhubarb Panacotta and Rhubarb Fool. (You can also find them online at www. fridaystfarm.co.uk. Corrina’s, Exotic Fruit of The Month, is Kiwi fruit. Packed with Vitamin C, children love them. You can eat them with a teaspoon like a boiled egg and they are great in a fruit salad. In March we welcomed Peter Harrison who gave us a very informative talk and presentation about the vital work of the East Anglian Air Ambulance service which began in 2000 following the plane crash which involved jockey Frankie Dettori. Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Norfolk are covered by two helicopters. Very experienced staff give immediate, on scene diagnosis and help to victims. In 2014 E.A.A.A. flew 1,785 missions, of which 25% were road accidents, 25% heart problems, 25% medical and fall related emergencies and 25% various other reasons. Anglia One is based at Norwich airport and Anglia Two, which is equipped to enable it to fly at night, is at Cambridge, ensuring a 25 minute journey to cover the area. The helicopters contain most of the equipment to deal with accidents and emergencies. Each mission costs about £2,400 and the EAAA is a charity relying on public donations, although this week the Government have given a large grant. Essex and Hertfordshire also have two air ambulances and all four can transport patients quickly to the appropriate hospitals eg Broomfield for burns, arriving within the “Golden Hour.” The work is supported by two Rapid Response Vehicles, which are used where appropriate. Recently fifteen members attended the Suffolk East Federation of W.I.'s A.G.M. at Trinity Park, Ipswich, a busy day with informative speakers including the fast jet pilot Mandy Hickson who inspired us with her tricky journey into a previously male - dominated profession. Our member Olla was thrilled to be short listed in the writing competition, which was on display. In this National W.I. Centenary Year we are looking forward to watching the A.G.M. being screened at Sizewell Social Club from the Albert Hall on Thursday 4th June. Our usual groups continue to meet monthly: playreading, choir, walking and lunch group. Many members have been busy knitting beanie hats for the premature baby units and collecting unwanted haberdashery to be sent abroad to enable ladies to make their own living. We meet in the U.R.C. Hall, Chapel Road, Saxmundham. IP17 1XQ. On the third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. Enquiries to Jenny Mann 01728 604608 Ipswich Hospital CEO meets with SMILE Café Customers On Thursday March 12th, Nick Hulme,CEO of The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, popped into the SMILE Café in Saxmundham, with his colleague Sarah Higson, the hospital lead on the Patient Experience initiative. They were there to chat with SMILE Café customers and learn about any specific issues or difficulties they had accessing health services at Ipswich Hospital. The SMILE Café is a pop-up café that sets up every Thursday at the Fromus Centre, from 10am to 2pm and its primary purpose is to provide an oasis in rural East Suffolk for vulnerable people – those with a frailty, illness or disability - their parent carers and support workers. Customers feel better going through difficult times when they can share their feelings and experiences with others who are ‘In the same boat’, and the SMILE café provides a welcoming setting with hot drinks and food. Nick and Sarah spoke to a mix of customers who appeared fairly happy with the hospital in general but had some particular complaints about what they saw as unnecessary journeys to the hospital for minor matters that they felt should be dealt with by local GP surgeries. Customer comments included: “My concern was for rural residents. More services should be moved from the district hospital to local areas. Rural residents who do not have their own transport have great problems”. “The CEO assured me that the trust was talking to GP’s locally about taking over routine tests which can prove particularly difficult for the elderly, or those with disabilities, who require a carer to attend on each occasion.” “The chief executive assured me that attempts were being made to enlist volunteers to assist with feeding elderly patients and those with dementia.” “The Chief Executive was very approachable and listened to our experiences.” Don Tricker, a SMILE Café volunteer said “I do hope the Trust can successfully conclude a negotiation with local GP’s to take on simple routine procedures, such as MRSA swab tests. In the case of vulnerable people, it www.saxmundhamnews.org currently requires two people to make a round trip journey of nearly 50 miles, taking the best part of the day for a procedure that takes seconds to carry out. After all, this already happens with blood tests…”. “It’s really important to listen to our patients and communities so we can aspire to improve further. And, I’ve been very impressed with the amazing community resource that is the SMILE Café.” Nick Hulme, CEO of The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust. For more information on the Patient Experience initiative, visit the website: www2.ipswichhospital.net/microsites/patient_ experience . We will also be hoping, following the move to new premises to be in a better position to access Local Authority Grants for this community, and be in a better position to challenge some of the planning applications in more detail. We are also ensuring that the inadequate Rendham Road footpath is improved in the near future; our contribution to this has already been funded using your money and you should see some movement on this project in the near future, as you will with the yellow lines outside the Saxmundham Primary School and beyond. Both will enable all sections of the community safe passage from both new estates and safer collection of children from an ever growing primary school population. We are also about to embark on a land drainage scheme for the Memorial Field and Seaman Road Playground; you will all remember the success of the Saxmundham Music Festival last year; this drainage scheme should enable a better surface to be Clerk’s remarks With local elections imminent I would like to give a report of the activities that have occurred during the last year. The Town will undoubtedly expand and it is vital that the town centre obtains more footfall as a shopping venue and we will continue to work even harder to establish a thriving Market, after all this is a Market Town. Saxmundham Town Council believe that money taken from residents via the precept should be given back by undertaking essential projects and schemes for the benefit of all. The Town Council have embarked on several projects that have yet to be completed; We are at the beginning of a Young People’s project to provide a clearly definable discreet space for the use of young people supervised by professional youth workers for a two year period; this project is almost paid for by the residents of Saxmundham, and is well on the way to being a reality with an expectation of being up and running by the Summer. The Council are intending to preserve the Old Police Station as a Community Asset for the town, and are currently in the process of purchasing the same having obtained permission from the Secretary of State to borrow the money via the government. This important asset will ensure that the area becomes an accessible hub to access the Town Council, gather various information and provide meeting rooms for the community. The Town Council have recognized the increased workload of myself, your Town Clerk, and to enable increased efficiency for the residents and town they have taken on an Assistant resulting in various information reaching our website promptly and providing communication for our expanding Town. It does also of course enable us to deal with enquiries used more often for community events all the year round as required. You will see we haven’t left out the younger members of the community as we have currently refurbished the Chantry Road Play Area and will shortly be embarking on a further project at Seaman Avenue. The Teen Shelter will soon be repaired and further equipment will be provided for older children. We held a Litter Pick last Saturday and it would be fortuitous if everyone would be kind enough to use the bins provided to keep our town looking clean and enticing to all. It will soon be decorated with beautiful hanging baskets once more for everyone to enjoy. On Saturday 25th April there will be a Food Fair in the Market Hall from 10am and various children’s events will be held during the afternoon. Unfortunately there will not be a Parade on the Sunday this year. It is your town - please help us promote it, be proud of it and provide enjoyment for one and all. Maddie Gallop – Saxmundham Town Clerk Present: Cllr J. Fisher – Chairman Cllr Mrs M. Andrews Cllr Sir Peter Batho Cllr Ms L. Hailey Cllr Ms Trotter-Langlois Cllr R. Plant Cllr Mrs D. Sculley Cllr D. Tricker Cllr K. Howe Cllr Mrs L. Jardine In attendance: Ms M. Gallop, Town Clerk Imogen Green, Clerical Assistant Cllr Mr M. Gower Suffolk County Councillor arrived at 8.10pm PC Kevin Stollery 4 members of the Public Richard Cornwell, EADT PUBLIC FORUM: The Memorial Field and Seaman Avenue Play Area are causing concern:•The Town Clerk has been aware of the problems in the Play Area for some time. At present she has established new equipment for Chantry Road Play Area and it is being installed as we speak. However thoughtless youths have damaged the Teen Shelter in Seaman Avenue which was requested by the youth four years ago. This was installed and had been an area for young people to enjoy and meet their friends. The whole play area is sadly strewn with broken glass and litter and the Clerk is already in the process of organising a clean up there. Quotations will be sought for the repair to the Teen Shelter and this will be discussed in detail later in the meeting. •The Memorial Field has also had an increase in litter being thrown around and youngsters have actually been seen picnicking and leaving all the debris behind, similar incidents occurring in Carlton Park also. The Clerk will contact the Schools for assistance in training youngsters to tidy up after themselves and leave open spaces and Play Areas a place for all to enjoy. It seems to be a sad reflection of our time that some children who are not taught to respect the environment and other people at an early age will obviously continue to do this as they grow up. Hopkins Homes and informed them that the builders had to do something about the Church Tower. •The footpath from Seaman Avenue to Mill Road has also an increasing amount of litter and garden debris and a Spring Clean will be organised in the near future. Cllr Mrs Andrews advised that at every meeting the Planning Officer states that they haven’t got a five year land supply but Suffolk Coastal District Council haven’t released it. There is a Lobby Group saying –No Adastral New Town – as the proposed 2000 houses are not wanted in that area and they have lodged an objection which will eventually go to the Supreme Court. •The proposed disco for young people, called CHILL, will, unfortunately not take place this month but hopefully the organisers will have everything in place before too long. REPORT FROM THE LOCAL POLICE: PC K Stollery reported that there had been 17 recorded crimes during February, 1 burglary, 1 attempted burglary, 2 criminal damage, 2 thefts, 1 attempted robbery to local shop with injury caused to victim, 1 assault to male, 1 GBH, 2 common assaults, 1 violence to secure entry of home, 1 drug incident, 1 abuse by telephone & 2 indecent/threatening text incidents, 1 harassment breach causing distress. PC Stollery, having previously read our agenda, thought that the Teen Shelter on Seaman Avenue Play Area is a total ‘eye-sore’ and has become a Health and Safety issue as the Perspex has been burnt and bottles have been deliberately thrown at the shelter hence an increasing amount of broken glass. REPORT FROM THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR: Cllr M Gower will be arriving late due to a previous meeting at Bramfield. REPORT FROM THE DISTRICT COUNCILLORS: Cllr Mrs Andrews attended a Development Control Committee Meeting with Cllr Sir Peter at Woodbridge on Wednesday. She opposed the proposed build of a further 170 houses by Hopkins Homes at Church Hill as she thought there should be another entrance/exit via Street Farm Road due to increasing traffic congestion down Church Hill. Both Cllr Sir Peter and Country Councillor Michael Gower agreed with her. Cllr Mrs Andrews thought that yellow boxes should be implemented outside the supermarket entrances. She also advised that the Church has had a problem with the Tower. As a listed building, in planning law, the Church should have been notified of any ground compaction as it can cause structural damage to nearby buildings. The Church Tower has suffered cracks and they have had to spend £7000 for repairs. The Church Warden has written to Hopkins Homes informing them of the damage and resulting costs but unfortunately he has not received any reply and will be writing once more. Church Hill is actually a clay ridge and Hopkins Homes are building on clay. The Chair of the Planning Committee at SCDC has spoken to Saxmundham is already experiencing problems without further approval of more housing developments from SCDC. Our Primary School cannot continue adding further classrooms because it is not big enough to accommodate increasing pupils attending school. A new Primary School is needed for the additional school places that will be required with the extra approved new builds together with more infrastructure. Cllr Sir Peter advised that our Chairman, Cllr Fisher, had also attended the meeting at SCDC and had spoken in favour of an alternative entrance to the Church Hill site via Street Farm Road. According to the District Council the extra 170 houses will not cause undue problems at the traffic lights. However it is a well-known fact that despite SCDC previously stating there would not be any problems when Tesco’s was built this was proven not to be the case with traffic tail-backed as far as Benhall from the traffic lights. The additional traffic from an extra 170 homes down Church Hill will undoubtedly cause traffic problems. Cllr Sir Peter advised that SCDC had agreed a nil increase in their portion of the Council tax for the coming year. 4640. Motion carried on majority vote. One abstention – Cllr Sir Peter. The whole area needs extensive renovation and the Clerk has this in hand. •To consider the following request for a donation -MAGPAS HELIMEDIX AIR AMBULANCE – Cllr Plant advised that this request had been considered but he proposed that we do not donate to this national charity on this occasion, seconded by Cllr Fisher. Motion carried on majority. Cllr Mrs Andrews abstained. •To consider drainage of the memorial field – Cllr Plant advised that drainage had previously been approved by full Council for £28,000. However completed a bona fide tender process in accordance with Local Government rules Cllr Plant advised that we only received one tender back which was inclusive of the play area as well which reflects the increase in cost of £39,000. The original amount is held in our earmarked reserves and the remainder can be taken out of our reserves. There will be minimal ongoing maintenance costs for the pump that will be installed. Cllr Plant proposed we accept this quotation, seconded by Cllr Ms Trotter-Langlois. Motion carried on majority vote. One abstention – Cllr Sir Peter. •To receive an update on the Police Station – Cllr Fisher advised that we had finally received a response from the Police and this will be discussed at the end of the meeting ‘en camera’. •To consider maintenance of trees and hedges in the Play Areas – Cllr Plant proposed that the Clerk has the authority to maintain trees and hedges in the Play Areas, seconded by Cllr Tricker. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried. 4647.TO RECEIVE A REPORT FROM THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR: The meeting was closed to allow County Councillor Michael Gower to give a report: He advised that it is a quiet time of the year and there was not much to report on. The budget had been agreed but the County Council have to make savings of £120 million in the near future. There are various meetings being held with regard to Sizewell and road links will be discussed with Highways and the County Council are awaiting EDF to come up with proposals. A small break ensued. 4648. TO APPROVE AMENDMENT OF THE STANDING ORDERS: •To incorporate recording of meetings and the adoption of a media policy. This was deferred. •Cllr Fisher proposed that the Clerical Assistant should be able to undertake the work of the Proper Officer when the Clerk is absent – seconded by Cllr Plant. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried. 4649. TO CONSIDER SAXMUNDHAM YOUTH PROJECT CONSULTATION PROPOSAL (papers circulated previously): Cllr Plant has spoken with Ormiston Families Trust with regard to providing a professional study to establish the need from a children’s/adolescent perspective and enable us to get our facility right for a Youth Project. The consultation with schools and other interested groups, is the key to Saxmundham’s long-term sustainability and inclusiveness of this Youth Project. Cllr Plant proposed the Town Council engage with Ormiston Families Trust to provide this Professional Study, seconded by Cllr Tricker. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried. •Volunteers will be needed on the Saturday. Cllr Plant has offered help with the disco and Cllr Fisher has offered assistance. 4650. TO DISCUSS PARKING IN SAXMUNDHAM: The Clerk advised that she had received complaints regarding parking along Albion Street. She enquired about parking permits from the District Council and received a questionnaire in return. Cllr Tricker advised that if we ended up with parking schemes there will be nowhere for anyone to park plus the cost of permits is expensive. It was felt that in this day and age parking outside your own property is not always available unless you have designated parking, a driveway or a garage. •An impact statement will begin in April seeking to show how this project will impact on the town and villages, businesses, schools residents and the environment. 4651. TO CONSIDER THE ROLE OF THE BUSINESSES OF SAXMUNDHAM: Cllr Mrs Andrews had expressed concern about the apparent demise of the Business Association. Cllr Howe said that their AGM had been deferred for six weeks as they had been unable to appoint a Chairman and a Vice Chairman. However Cllr Howe had heard that the situation had just changed and a Chairman and Vice Chairman will be appointed at the next BOS meeting. 4652. TO REVIEW AND COMMENT ON THE FOLLOWING PLANNING APPLICATIONS: DC/15/0354/VOC - David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties - Land between Rendham Road & A12 Rendham Road, Saxmundham – Variation of conditions 10, 12, 13 of planning permission C11/2864 to submit revised plan relating to highway works. Cllr Fisher advised that the Highway works plan associated with the Section 106 agreement on the Mayflower Green Development was different from the plan with the application that had been given permission. The work was carried out according to the S 106 plan and this is a retrospective application to do the work as it has already been done. We strongly object on 2 grounds. Firstly the footway on the southern side of Rendham Road should continue to the Memorial Field to enable a safe route to be put in via the field and secondly on the northern side of Rendham Road an extra triangular footway has been added with a dangerous slope in the middle which we would like to be made safe. DC/15/0327/VOC - David Wilson Homes - Land west of 56 to 80 Mayflower Avenue, Sax - Updated versions of two documents of materials – substitution of approved Design and Access Statement for Design and Access Statement and approved Planning Compliance Statement. Cllr Batho had previously declared an interest. This application is for a change of colour for the bricks and tiles. Cllr Fisher proposed no objections to this, seconded Cllr Plant. Unanimously agreed. Motion carried. 4653. TO CONSIDER THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ST. GEORGES’ WEEKEND 25/26 APRIL 2015: Cllr Mrs Jardine advised the following:•Morris Dancers have been appointed •The WI have agreed to do the refreshments on the Saturday morning •The bunting has been collected and the flags need new broom handles. Cllr Jardine will ask Cllr Willett to attach the flags to the handles. 4654. TO RECEIVE REPORTS FROM REPRESENTATIVES OF VARIOUS OTHER BODIES INCLUDING WORKING PARTIES: Three Communities Cycling project. - Cllr Miss Hailey gave an update on this. •The information has already been published in Saxmundham News. • A link has been put onto facebook. •It should be possible to develop a version of ‘shared space’ as other towns have. •The Ladies Cycle Tour will be passing through Saxmundham on the 17th June 2015 and hopefully that will make the town more cycling friendly. •Negotiations are ongoing with the Sax Music Fest. Site Allocations and Area Specific Policies Working Group: – Cllr Mrs Jardine attended a meeting regarding the first phase consultation which ended on the 27th February and the next phase will begin after collecting all the views given. 4655. DATE AND TIME OF NEXT MEETING: 13 APRIL 2015 at 7.15pm 4656. To exclude the public under the Public Bodies (admission to meetings) Act 1960 on the grounds that publicity would be prejudicial to public interest by reasons of the confidential nature of the following business being transacted: To consider the response to our offer for the Police Station: Meeting ended at 10pm Saxmundham News is independently edited and published by Leiston Press. There is an open door policy on contributions to encourage local involvement and a range of opinions are represented. Saxmundham Town Council News is published by Saxmundham Town Council, printed by Leiston Press and distributed by them as an insert to Saxmundham News. Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards The 2015 Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards took place on Thursday 12th March at The Hangar, Kesgrave Hall. Organised by Suffolk Coastal District Council, the Awards celebrated the business and community initiatives and successes that have taken place in Suffolk Coastal over the last 18 months. The evening was hosted for a second time by Steve Allen a comedian, writer and presenter. With over one hundred entries for the awards this year, the judges had their work cut out shortlisting the finalists and agreeing the winners. On the night there were more than forty businesses and groups represented alongside the many individual finalists and distinguished guests. To mark the 40th anniversary of Suffolk Coastal District Council, Cllr Bob Snell, Chairman of the Council, opened the evening with the new Chairman’s Award. An award brought in this year to honour the business that has made a significant contribution to Suffolk Coastal over the past 40 years. Woodbridge’s Brafe Engineering narrowly beat Notcutts and Revetts to win the award for their outstanding record of community involvement, employment and environmental policies. Guests were well looked after in the impressive Hangar at Kesgrave Hall and enjoyed a delicious meal of watermelon & feta salad, braised shoulder of lamb with garlic peas and crushed new potatoes followed by chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream. A total of thirteen awards were presented throughout the evening covering categories including Customer Focus, Services to the Community, People & Development, Encouraging Tourism and Charity Champion [see winners list below]. The winners received an engraved trophy and all the finalists were awarded a bottle of Adnams Champagne with their certificates. Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Cabinet Member for Customers, Communities and Leisure at Suffolk Coastal District Council, described the evening: “It’s been a fabulous evening. It’s a real privilege to celebrate with the people, businesses and groups that benefit Suffolk Coastal on every level. The breadth of entries shows how ingenious, committed and effective we can be at making improvements and creating opportunities within our community.” Cllr Bob Snell, Chairman of Suffolk Coastal District Council, added: “It was the perfect way to mark 40 years of Suffolk Coastal District Council. The range of industries, interests and activities represented in the district is impressive by any standards. It is wholly appropriate that we share our successes and reward innovation, hard work and community spirit. These awards are growing every year, showcasing the many projects and people that benefit all of us who live and work here.” Lin Barnes, Director at Christies Care – winners of the People Development Award, said: “I’m over the moon. Our training team has been doggedly focused on putting together a leading training programme for our carers for the benefit of our clients. Our decision to open the training up to family carers within the community for free has spread the knowledge and improved the standard of care and support for family carers in the district. I’m so proud of the team and thrilled that their hard work has been recognised.” Nicola Cannon, Owner of Melton Day Nursery – winner of the Customer Focus Award, said: “Wow. It’s all a lot more overwhelming than you’d expect. To be recognised for our dedication to our customers is brilliant. It’s absolutely what we’re about. The families that we support are a big part of our identity and we work really closely with them to make sure we’re looking after their children in the best possible way. I’m delighted for my team. They deserve this recognition for believing in and working hard to create an outstanding, engaging and nurturing nursery”.Geoff Dreher, Chairman of the East Anglian Sailing Trust – winner of the Enabling Communities Award, said: “We were voted for by the public! It’s brilliant. We really appreciate the support we’ve received from the Enabling Communities scheme it’s allowed us to bolster the sailing opportunities we can provide for people with disabilities and recruit more volunteers. To win this award will hopefully help more people to hear about us and encourage more to enjoy sailing with us.” Mandy Hearle – winner of the Charity Champion Award, said: “I’m just so thrilled that people are still donating to MSF. I set out to try and make a small contribution to something that Poppy would have devoted the rest of her life to. Winning this award helps us to spread awareness of the great efforts of MSF and hopefully encourage more people to donate and fund raise on their behalf. It’s not just me that has made this happen, the Harvey family have been with me all the way. We all won this award for Poppy and she would be delighted! The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. The museum has been officially ‘Accredited’ by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) as meeting the national standard for UK museums which is an impressive achievement for a new museum. Further information on the society can be found at www.bentwatersas.org.uk and for the museum at www.bcwm.org.uk. The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition including the original decontamination showers and airlocks allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. Other parts of the building have been turned into exhibition rooms, covering the history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993. Included in this are histories of the units that operated from the airfield, particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge, again covering the period from W.W.II until the present day. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Further exhibition rooms feature information on the “Special Operations/Rescue Squadrons” that were based at RAF Woodbridge, and also the “Aggressor” Squadron based at Bentwaters. What happened when Rosseti lost his poems? Whose famous painting became an advert for soap? What did Ruskin see on the night of his wedding? The answers to these questions will give an insight into this collection of remarkable paintings and poetry. By Carl Page –Partner, Ensors Chartered Accountants George Osborne’s Budget speech seemed unashamedly triumphant and victorious, as he rattled off statistics about the improving economy, talked about Britain “walking tall again”, and picked on a certain second kitchen owner. But which measures should business really pay attention to? The Annual Investment Allowance, giving 100% tax relief on plant and machinery in the year of expenditure was due to fall from £500,000 per annum to just £25,000 from 1 January 2016. The Budget acknowledged the need to change this, and we are promised a “much more generous” figure, to be announced in the Autumn Statement. Come along to your... The first change, ensuring the “associated disposal” rules only apply where at least a 5% holding in the business changes hands will not effect many, except for larger partnerships, where a 5% interest is not possible. Secondly in deciding if a company is a trading company eligible for ER, it will often no longer be possible to take into account the trading activities of “joint venture” companies. These are coupled with the loss of ER on business goodwill sold to a connected party announced at the Autumn Statement, which closes off a much used incorporation trick. Meanwhile, farmers will be pleased with being able to average their profits over five years, an extension to the current two years, but the number crunching will be interesting! Not to be forgotten is that from April 2015, the pre-announced abolition of employer’s NIC for the under 21s comes into force, which will surely benefit school leavers coming into the workforce over graduates. This is to be backed up by the abolition of NICs for apprentices from April 2016. The main rate of corporation tax, currently 21%, will be reduced to 20% from 1 April, resulting in the unification of the small profits rate and the main rate. From 6 April class 2 NIC will be paid alongside income tax and class 4 NIC on an annual basis and assessed on the individual’s tax return. And then there was the announcement that the personal tax return is to be abolished. However I suspect the reality of this will be somewhat different from the headlines, and I don’t think our personal tax staff need to expect their P45 just yet! The real question though, is who will hold the keys to number 11 come May, and what might be in store for business in any postelection Budget? www.saxmundhamnews.org Check out our website for all the latest info: lovetosing.onesuffolk.net Rachael 01394 420486 @love2singchoir [email protected] Poorly PC? This fun-filled family panto has been successfully performed at other similar venues around Suffolk. “We were looking for some novel live entertainment for the youngsters and their families to enjoy, on their doorstep, without having worry too much about cost or travel. We hope that this bit of fun theatre provides a bright spot on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, whatever the weather”, says Don Tricker, volunteer director, SADCIC. The show will take place at the Fromus Centre main hall and the doors will open at 2.30pm, ready for a 3pm start. The interactive show lasts for about 2 hours with a 20 minute interval. Refreshments will be on hand in the shape of ice-cream, popcorn and sweets along with soft drinks, teas and coffees. These will be on sale before the show and at the interval. There’s free car parking for around 30 cars. All seats are priced at £6 and tickets will need to be purchased in advance, as there will be no last-minute sales on the door. Tickets will not reserve particular seats and seating will be on the basis of first come, first served. Tickets can be purchased, now, by going to the Fromus Centre website and following the instructions. This is to simplify matters for the SADCIC volunteers. “This is not something we have attempted before.” says Don Tricker “We don’t have a sophisticated electronic mailing and billing system but we hope our simple solution works to everyone’s’ satisfaction.” For more ticket information and news on this event, please visit the Fromus Centre www.fromuscentre.org.uk website, or e-mail: [email protected], or telephone 01728604944. Leiston CAB has been working closely with the benefits administrators so that we can give the best possible advice to our clients. So what is it? Universal Credit is a means-tested benefit for people of working age with a low income. To qualify, you must be under the age when you can make a claim for Pension Credit. You don't have to be out of work to get it: you may qualify if you are working, looking for work, sick or disabled, or caring for children or for a disabled person. It is means-tested, which means that the amount you receive depends on how much income and capital you have got. Capital means things like savings and some kinds of property. Jobcentre Plus will administer the benefit. It will eventually replace many existing benefits, which will be abolished, namely: Income Support; Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance; Income-related Employment and Support Allowance; Child Tax Credit; Working Tax Credit; Housing Benefit; and Budgeting loans. You will have to meet various conditions to get Universal Credit. These include accepting a claimant commitment. This is a document that says what you will have to do to prepare for work, find work, get better paid work, or work more hours. For example, you may have to go to interviews to help you find work or apply for jobs. You can get more information either from your local Jobcentre Plus or from the Leiston CAB. We are open at Leiston as follows. Monday 10.00 am – 1.30 pm Tuesday 10.00 am – 2.30 pm Wednesday – closed but open at the Meadow Children’s Centre in Saxmundham 10 am – 12 noon Thursday 10.00 am – 2.30 pm Friday 10.00 am – 1.30 pm.
