The wellbeing and happiness of our students is of great importance to us,
as it is to you. We want our students to enjoy their time at College whilst
developing skills and gaining knowledge that will enable them to succeed
in their chosen career. We’ll do everything we can to make this happen.
We ensure that all our students:
Have access to support services
Are safeguarded
Our Student Support Team is here to help if any student has a
problem or needs advice or guidance. Students can get help with
costs for new course items, financial support, childcare and have the
opportunity to speak with one of our Student Engagement Officers if
they are worried about anything.
The safety of all of our students is vital and we will always put safety
first. We have a safeguarding policy that is enforced at all times.
Parents and carers are kept informed of individual students’ progress
and given the opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns directly
with tutors at parents and carers’ evenings held throughout the year.
Student progress reports keep parents and carers informed of
development so that progress can be monitored.
Have an individual learning plan
Each student has an individual learning plan with personal targets.
All students will have a personal tutor who will help make sure they
are on track with their studies, receive any extra learning support
needed and to generally help them settle in at College.
Have careers advice and guidance
Our Careers Team is here to help every student choose the right
course and to provide advice and guidance to assist them in planning
their future career, helping them to secure employment or move into
further or higher education.
We recognise that some students adapt to College life better than
others and that students learn at different paces.
The College provides a wide range of vocational learning courses as
an alternative to A levels*. This way of learning prepares students for
the world of work, studying in-depth learning programmes that also
provide the opportunity for them to progress to university. We ensure
that our students learn at the right level and that they are on the
relevant course to progress to the next level or their chosen career.
“The tutor is extremely
good, enthusiastic and
uses a variety of teaching
methods / resources to
make lessons interesting.”
* Up to 420 UCAS points available on our level 3 courses enabling
progression to University.

Student ambassador & student voice schemes
Through ‘Student Voice’ all students have the opportunity for their
views to be heard by the College Corporate Board and Directorate.
Student Ambassadors play a vital part in role modelling to existing
and potential new students behaviour, attitude and involvement in
many areas and aspects of college life. Student participation and
representation is actively encouraged in both schemes.

Apprenticeships
ge
lle
Apprenticeships are practical, hands-on
programmes designed to provide you with
relevant, practical training, which will enable
you to progress within your chosen industry.
Apprentices are paid a minimum of £2.73 per
hour (October 2014).
How do I find an employer?
As an Apprentice you will start at Level 2 unless you have suitable
knowledge and vocational experience in your chosen field.
Finding an employer to take you on as an apprentice is your first task.
There are lots of employers keen to recruit and are looking for
switched on apprentices. A bit of planning and investigation will give
you the edge. You can start the ball rolling by applying to companies
whilst still at school, with a view to being taken on as an apprentice
once you leave.
You will work with an employer four days per week and spend one
day per week training at the College or in your workplace, working
towards your qualifications.
An employer may want you to do some work experience before
offering you a position. Many people who have been successful in
finding an apprenticeship have done so by completing work
experience first. The College can provide support to help you find an
employer, but we cannot guarantee you a job.

How do I apply for jobs?
It looks easy – and it can be if you put in the preparation. If you
haven’t had much experience at job hunting don’t worry, the College
can help with CV preparation and interview techniques. We also work
closely with the National Apprenticeship Service.
Case Study
What happens next?
If you secure a job, the College will work with you and your employer
to begin your Apprenticeship as soon as possible. If you do not have a
job, you should still apply for an Apprenticeship and we will invite you
to attend an interview. It is a good idea to visit the College website to
look for vacancies and come along to one of our open evenings. You
can also register with the National Apprenticeship Service.

Engineering
Bishop Auckland College is proud to be working in partnership with an ‘Outstanding’
provider such as South West Durham Training (SWDT). With purpose built, fully equipped
and modern training centre SWDT has trained people from all around the North East region
for over 45 years. Following a visit from Ofsted in July 2014, the organisation has been
judged to be “Outstanding” across all aspects of provision.
Engineering know-how converts scientific knowledge into technology and then technology
into successful innovation. Many seemingly simple aspects of our daily lives have been
conceptualised, designed and developed by an engineer. Over the next few years there will
be a shortage of skilled engineers to support businesses in the sector. There has never been
a better time to train as an engineer with excellent career prospects with good salaries and
guarantees of employment.
All of these programmes are
designed to give students a
good range of practical skills
in their chosen area and to
prepare them well for jobs in the
engineering sectors. Employers
highly value these skills and
many students are able to
secure apprenticeships during
or following their studies.
South West Durham Training offers full time courses in the following Engineering

Engineering maintenance
technicians service machinery and
equipment in the manufacturing,
production and transportation
industries. You could be involved in
a variety of jobs ranging from fixing
equipment on a high technology
production line, to testing aircraft
parts and components in a hangar.
Toolmakers produce precision tools
like jigs, dies and moulds that are
used by engineering craftspeople to
manufacture a range of products.
They work mainly with metals, alloys
and composite materials, known as
‘stocks’ or castings.
Welders cut, shape and join sections
of metal plate and pipes in a wide
range of industries. These include
construction and engineering,
transport, aerospace, and offshore
oil and gas. They also carry out
repairs on manufacturing equipment
and machinery. Sheet metal
workers make metal products for
the engineering, construction and
manufacturing industries from flat
metal sheets, including ducting,
cylinders, panels and containers.
As a sheet metal worker in light
engineering, you might work with
anything from aluminium metal
sheeting for street signs to items
like panels used in vehicle or aircraft
manufacturing.
This course is designed to equip
you with the skills required to enter
employment in the engineering
sectors or to progress to higher
level courses, including university
degrees. It will also provide you with
the opportunity to develop a range of
skills and techniques, personal skills
and attributes that are essential
for successful performance in
working life. You will study a range
of engineering subjects, such as
mechanical science, engineering
maths, computer aided design and
electrical and electronic principles.
Entry requirements for Level 2 courses:
Candidates must preferably hold a minimum
of grades A-C in English, maths, science &
technology. Other entry requirements will be
discussed at interview on an individual basis.
Entry requirements:
Minimum four GCSEs at grade
A-C including maths or BTEC First
Diploma at Merit or Distinction.

How it works:
Apprenticeships focus on the whole job, not just
individual skills. Apprentices learn through a
combination of on and woff-the-job education and
training. In the workplace they work alongside other
employees and the rest they learn from South West
Durham Training.
In most cases this is on a day release basis.
Apprenticeships help companies to stay competitive
by developing the kind of people that business
needs for the future. We can help you decide which
Apprenticeship is best for you.
There are two levels of Apprenticeship; apprentices and
advanced apprentices:
Apprenticeships usually last at least a year and
apprentices work towards a National Vocational
Qualification at Level 2, Functional Skills and in most
cases a technical certificate.
Following a visit from Ofsted in
July 2014, the organisation has
been judged to be “Outstanding”
across all aspects of provision.
Advanced Apprenticeships usually last at least two
years and apprentices work towards a National
Vocational Qualification at Level 3, Functional Skills
in maths, English and ICT at level 2 and a technical
certificate.
