Cat on a Rake
As yo u entered the theater this evening yo u undo ubtedly no ticed that the set fo r
this sho w lo o ks different then many o ther settings that yo u have seen in this
space. What yo u see in fro nt o f yo u is called a “raked” stage. When the stage
flo o r is tipped to wards the audience we say that it is “raked” and I tho ught I
wo uld take a few minutes to explain abo ut the backgro und and purpo se o f this
scenic element.
Raked stages are an ancient device usually used to make it easier fo r the
audience to see the acto rs who are at the back part o f the stage (referred to as
“upstage”). Yo u may have heard this term befo re witho ut understanding ho w
“upstage” go t its name, but I am sure that yo u no w can clearly see where the
term co mes fro m. Even when the stage flo o r is flat, co mmo n theater parlance
refers to the back part o f the stage as upstage. No t surprisingly, the part o f the
stage that is clo se to the audience, is called do wnstage. These terms co me
fro m a time when all stages were raked.
A raked stage allo ws fo r attractive visual co mpo sitio n o f the acto rs and the
scenery in additio n to making it po ssible fo r the acto rs who are upstage to be
easily seen. At times it is also used to create an illusio n o f depth by making
o bjects that are further fro m the audience appear much smaller. This is called
fo rced perspective. Ho wever, if an acto r cro sses upstage the illusio n is bro ken
because the acto r will beco me much to o large fo r the streets o r do o rways o r
trees that are at the upstage part o f the rake. Therefo re, this kind o f rake is
called a vista stage and exists o nly to be viewed in the backgro und.
But a rake can serve ano ther purpo se as well. Yo u may already have tho ught
abo ut the fact that this stage space lo o ks a little bit precario us to walk o n.
Making the stage a challenging space fo r the acto rs/characters to mo ve in is a
device used by the directo r and set designer to cause the physical wo rld o f the
pro ductio n to reflect the inner struggles o f the characters. Big Daddy’s ho use is
no t an easy place to live in fo r any o f the characters in this play. By raking the
stage the directo r and designer have made the psychic and emo tio nal
challenges o f the sto ry a tangible part o f the enviro nment fo r the audience.
I ho pe yo u are intrigued by to night’s sto ry and inspired by the beautiful
language o f Tennessee Williams. I also ho pe that yo u enjo y experiencing this
wo nderful classic o f the American theater staged in this challenging and
beautiful enviro nment.
