The time: The Late 18 0 0 s. The play: A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. A sto ry
abo ut do mestic co nflict as a wo man reevaluates her subservient ro le to her
husband in light o f the fact that, while her ingenuity saved his life, he is unwilling
to accept that she is anything mo re than his play thing: a do ll.
And no w fo r to night's sho w: a mo dern explo ratio n o f this ancient battle o f the
sexes using as its mo tivatio n a classic no vel. David Ives' play is an adaptatio n
o f the 18 70 no vel Venus in Furs by the Austrian autho r Leo po ld vo n SacherMaso ch which happens to be the no vel that inspired the term "Maso chism." As
yo u will see, bo th this idea and the no vel play a central part in the sto ryline o f
the play.
As we all kno w fro m o ur o wn experience, the relatio nship between men and
wo men is an endlessly subtle and perpetually changing dance invo lving
pursuit, retreat, do minatio n and submissio n. So metimes the issues are trivial
while at o ther times they are earth shatteringly significant. Over the years the
theater has examined many o f these variatio ns.
