Principals’ Message
Last Monday week the school held the Annual P&C AGM and
General P&C Meeting. Thank you to those outgoing committee
members who have done a wonderful job over the past year/s and
achieved a great deal for our wonderful school. Welcome to those
who have taken up positions for the next 12 months; we look forward to another great year.

I would also like to congratulate the combined Callide Boys Soccer Team that took out the Toy World Cup for the 2nd year in a
row. This is a mighty effort by the boys and displays the strength
of soccer in our community and how the boys gelled as one to
take the competition out. In the finals Biloela State was represented by Maverick B and Trent H. Congratulations boys and thanks
to Greg Seagrott (coach) and Tania Bode (manager).
In other sporting news, congratulations to Bradley B (under 10),
Mitchell B and Carter S (under 12) for their selection in the Port
Curtis Rugby League squad, Chloe W and Olivia M for their selection in the Port Curtis under 12 Netball Squad. In the Netball 6 of
the 10 positions were filled by Callide Valley girls truly showing the
strength of netball here in the valley. Good luck to those selected
for teams and well done to the others who tried out.
Every Day Counts
With only just under three weeks remaining it is important that we
continue to instil a strong work ethic in our students by encouraging and expecting maximum attendance at school. In previous
years there has been a growing trend across the state for attendance to begin tapering off in the final week leading into school
holidays. There will be no slacking off at Biloela and parents &
students can expect routine lessons and new content to be covered throughout that week as classes follow our set curriculum.
One of our School’s improvement priorities for the next 3 years is
attendance so it is important at times like this that we remain focussed on ensuring maximum attendance – Every Day Counts!
Our school attendance rate is sitting at 94.1% which is the highest
it has been for Term One since data has been stored on OneSchool in 2011. Leading this charge are our preppies with an attendance rate of 95.3%. Great work Preppies!!!!!
Always Opportunities to Volunteer
Research has found that parental involvement in schooling is a strong indicator of a child’s success. Children whose parents had high aspirations for their
kids, backed up by their involvement in the school community, had a better
chance of doing well regardless of wealth, ethnicity or the kind of school they
attended.
We understand that not every parent is able to volunteer time during week
days (work full time), but there are always opportunities for parents and
grandparents to get involved in the school community. Helping out on tuckshop, assisting with reading groups, volunteering in the classroom are all
ways that we can be involved. Whatever time or knowledge you are able to
offer, know that it will be much appreciated – every little bit counts! If you are
able to assist please don’t hesitate in contacting your child’s teacher or members of the P&C.
Year 7 Transition Day – Biloela State High School
We are extremely excited to begin our Transition Program into High School
for your student who will be attending High School next year for Year 7.
We have found that a structured and supportive transition phase assists students to develop an understanding of ‘high school’ life and experience this
first hand. We have developed a program which gives students an accurate
and insightful look into the operations of a high school as well as begin to
dispel any fears they may have.
Our first of the three transition activities will be held on Thursday 23rd April,
2015. This allows students to begin the smooth transition into our school with
a great range of knowledge and exposure to the subject areas offered at our
school. We look forward to meeting all Year 6 students on this day.
Please advise your primary school if you student will not be attending the
day.

Reading Plus
Reading Plus is an exciting on-line Program which assists our students
to become better readers. It is a program that prepares students to engage in complex texts by developing the three key dimensions of successful reading: capacity, efficiency and motivation. The program is personalised for each student and is dynamically adjusted to increase
reading achievement for students in Year 3 and beyond.
It picks up where phonics and oral reading instruction leave off, assisting students in developing silent reading and comprehension skills they
need to become proficient readers and independent learners.
The program is in three parts. See Reader which develops silent reading fluency and comprehension, Read Around which develops the student’s vocabulary and iBalance which develops and remediates the student’s visual skills.
Biloela State School has over 50 students and several staff members
using this program and already participants are unlocking new levels
and moving on. The Computer Lab is opened Tuesday and Thursday
mornings from 8am for students wishing to complete their weekly assignments. Class time is also available.
Congratulations to the students who have already mastered their starting level and have moved on to the next.

Cross Country Friday 27th March
Students turning 9 – 12 years compete at the High School starting at 9am
9 & 10 year olds run 2km
11 & 12 year olds run 3km
This is an Interhouse competition so students need to wear house shirts
Students meet teachers in the undercover area at school and will then walk to the High School.
Multicultural Dress-up Day
Friday 20th March
Students turning 5 – 8 years compete on our oval starting at 2pm
5 & 6 year olds run 1 lap
7 & 8 year olds run 2 laps
Students have all been training very hard during PE lessons, with class teachers and before
school sessions. Good luck to everyone!
Regional Sports Selection
Term 1 has been a busy term for representative sport. We have had a number of students represent Biloela SS at a variety of sports trials which has resulted in the following students being
selected for representative teams to compete later in the year at Capricornia and State Titles.

Toyworld Cup
Congratulations to the Callide Valley Team of boys who have been competing in the Gladstone
Soccer Toyworld Cup competition this term. Students from St Josephs and Biloela SS combined to enter a team in the competition which was played every Monday in Gladstone. This
was a huge commitment from the boys and parents who took them. Callide Valley won the
Grand Final this week 2-0 against St John’s The Baptist, making us champions for the second year in a row. CONGRATULATIONS Maverick Barsby & Trent Howells for being part of this
team!!!!!!
As part of our Harmony Day celebrations, we are having a whole
school (staff and students) Multicultural dress-up day. Come as an
Inuit, a Masai warrior, a Mexican amigo- the options are endless!

Athletics Carnival
Tuckshop is open one day a week and operates using online ordering whilst following
the Healthy Eating Program. Biloela State School is proud to offer students a good variety of
healthy food that they can purchase at the tuckshop. It is operated solely by Volunteers under the guidance of a Volunteer Convenor and is a major fundraiser for the school.

Australian Maths Competition for 2015
This year due to the fact that our class timetables are very full and Year 3 and 5
students are busy with NAPLAN preparations the Australian Maths Competition
has been offered to Year 4 and Year 6 Maths Extension students. This activity is
done in conjunction with the High School, as in previous years we will organise
some lessons and school visits with the High School staff. Students are requested to return the permission form and $ 4 in an envelope, to the school office by
Thursday April 02, 2015.
This competition is one of the largest annual events on the education calendar.
The AMC was one of the first of its kind in Australia. More than 40 countries
participate each year. The emphasis is on problem solving which is a valued life
skill we emphasis here at Biloela Primary School.
