Dear Parents/Guardians, It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of Term 1. The Term has had many highlights but it is the everyday behaviour and presentation of our students that is particularly commendable. We continually focus on our students remaining on track by following our CARS - COMMUNICATION, ATTITUDE, RESPECT and SAFETY. I encourage parents to use the same language at home over the Easter break. Removal of Trees The tree loppers have completed the work in the school. I realise for some this has been quite confronting opening the school up and removing some significant shade. Please understand that this work was carried out under two scopes of work. Repair and removal of trees damaged by the cyclone Removal of potential safety and future safety risks In the Junior playground there was one large tree that had a large fault in the middle section that was slowly dying and could have the potential risk of falling. The other significant tree that was removed was the yellow flowering tree near the Junior toilet block. This tree was partly damaged by the cyclone but had been marked to be removed in the future due to its size and encroachment onto buildings. The Arborist with the tree loppers also identified several large gum trees that had started to split or rot internally at the base. Considering the weight above these fault areas it was suggested removal just for safety reasons. Below are photos of some of the rot and cracks in the trees. WHERE TO NOW? The Arborist is providing a planting plan for the School to replace some of the removed trees. We have also been approached by a parent who is in contact with Greening Australia to help in providing seedlings. It is the School’s plan to have some of the Lower School classes adopt these seedlings and look after them for the time they are at Biloela State School. Finally the School has begun applying for grants to build a new shade structure in the Junior Playground. I thank everyone for their concern about the work being carried out in the School and welcome any feedback on how we can move forward and set up a sustainable planting plan for the future of the School and community. Attendance Being at school every day counts. Missing one day of school can mean that your child has missed important curriculum content. If your child is absent one day per week, this quickly adds up to two months of missed school in a year. School Attendance for term 1: 94.2% Prep – 94.7% Year 1 – 92.4% Year 2 – 93.9% Year 4 – 94% Year 5 – 94.1% Year 6 – 94.9% Year 3 – 94.8% ANZAC Commemorative Service: Our ANZAC Commemorative Service will be held on Friday 24 April 2015, at 9.45am at the Civic Centre. This is a special 100 year service and we will be combining with the other local primary schools. Students from Biloela High School will run the service. Students will be also asked to march with the School on Saturday morning at the Community Service. Details will be provided on the first week back. Have a safe Easter Break and enjoy time with your family. Matt Sahlqvist. Cross Country Results Our Cross Country was held at the High School last Friday, March 27th.
