h e following teacher’s pack offers teachers a wide variety of activities associated with the
show, “Monster Madness”. Activities range from games and exercises based on the
language in the show to a synopsis of the plot and a comprehensive vocabulary list.
We strongly recommend preparing students before coming to see a show. A Face to Face show
in itself may be rewarding but understanding and appreciation are greatly increased as a result of
previous preparation and post show activities. The fact that the students have a basic grasp of
the plot and the vocabulary facilitates not only their understanding but also the work of the actors
thus ensuring an activity beneficial to all those involved.
Face to Face would also like to stress the fact that their shows are live theatrical events and therefore certain basic conditions should be respected. Please remind students not to leave the auditorium during the show; not to eat or drink; to respect the other students and participants and
that the idea of the show is NOT to test their English but to have FUN! All the above conditions
are easily met with the presence and co-operation of you, the teacher.

rite down all the words that appear in
the show on a piece of paper. Put them
into a bag. One member of the class picks
a word and the other students have to ask
questions about the word in order to find out
what the word is.
The student can only answer YES or NO.
Every time the student says no a mark is put
up on the board.
Plot synopsis

to the show on the blackboard. Split the
class into two teams and give a number to
each member of the team. For example, if the
teams have five members each then number
each team from one to five. The teams sit at a
distance from the blackboard and the teacher
shouts out a number, then an object. The first
member of the team that touches the object
on the board wins a point. The gane continues
until one of the teams reaches the set number
of ponts: for example, the first team to reach
ten points wins.

his is the story of Monster Madness. The story of Dr Frankenstein and her creation.
She is going to create life from death using human body parts. Arms, hands, legs,
feet, eyes, ears and a brain. It is here in the cemetery where she will find the body parts to
create her monster.
H
ere we are on a dark and lonely road. It is raining. It is windy. There are lots of wolves.
Travelling along the road is a newly married couple, Brad and Janet. Brad drives the
car to the left, then to the right. He drives forwards and then he stops. Brad looks at Janet.
Janet looks at Brad. They kiss. Suddenly, they hear wolves howling. Janet is very scared.
She screams. Brad tries to start the car but it won’t start. The car is kaput!

rad and Janet decide to walk to the castle to ask for help. They walk and walk and
walk until they arrive at the castle. They knock on the door. Igor opens the door. They
enter the castle.

n the day that your students come to the theatre, why not organize a themed ‘Monster’s
Day’? Children will enjoy dressing up to come to the show, and it will greatly increase
their motivation, especially if their teachers dress up as well! You could give prizes for
the best costumes and hold a monster party after school, inviting parents and asking each family
to bring special ‘monster food’ as party snacks. At the monster party,
parents could have the opportunity to see photographs taken during the
show and view your monster wall display (see page 9).

ou will need to work in an open space – the gymnasium is ideal. Put on some music and
ask your class to walk around the room. Now stop the music and call out a body part from
the list above, such as ‘nose’. The students must stop moving and point to that body part.
The last student to point or any student who points to the wrong body part is eliminated and must
sit out. The game continues until all the students but one have been eliminated – this student is
the winner!
For older children you can make the game more complicated by adding the commands left and
right to the body parts, eg. left eye, right arm etc. You can also include the commands ‘dead’
(students must fall to the floor) and ‘alive’ (students put their hands in the air and shake all over)
to make the game more interesting!
Liar!
T
he class form a circle and one volunteer stands in the centre. He or she must repeat the
mimes from the previous game, pointing to and naming body parts. The rest of the class
repeat the word and gesture in chorus. However, after a while the volunteer must make
a ‘mistake’, giving an incorrect name to a body part. Instead of repeating the word and action,
students must instead call out ‘liar!’ If ‘liar’ is called before anyone has repeated the word and
mime, the student who correctly called out ‘liar’ becomes the next volunteer. If, however, the
class repeated the incorrect body part before anyone called out liar, the volunteer stays in the
centre and the game continues. Make sure that all your students have a chance to be the volunteer before finishing the game.

I m agine that, like Doctor Frankenstein, your students are going to create their own monster.
What does he/she look like? Does he/she have any special monster powers? Is it a clever or a
stupid monster? Now ask your class to paint their monsters. To the finished painting, children
must add the monster’s name and age (in English, of course), either at the foot of the drawing or
on a separate display card. Older students can include more information, such as personality or
special powers, and write the display card in sentences.
Now hold a class presentation in which students show the class their monster and introduce him.
This will practice the use of the third person: ‘His name is…’ ‘He is …. years old’ ‘His personality
is crazy’ etc. You can give a prize for the scariest monster!
After the presentation, hang the monster paintings on the wall together with your mismatch
monsters (see below) to make a monstrous wall display.
Mismatch monsters
Preparation:
Cut sheets of A4 paper in half LENGTHWAYS, to make long strips.You will need one strip per
student. Now fold the paper, concertina-style, into 4.
Give a paper strip to each child and tell the class that you are going to draw monster! They must
draw, on the top part of the paper, the head of the monster. Then they must pass the paper to
the person on their left. Each student now has a different piece of paper. On this they must draw
the body of the monster, including shoulders, arms and stomach. Now everyone changes papers
again, and the game continues in this way, with the remaining two sections used for drawing
3: The hips, legs and knees and
4: The monster’s feet
Now your mismatch monsters are ready to be
opened and laughed at!
