Issue #45 • March 2015
This year will be a “triathalon” of events that test
physical, intellectual and cooperative talents of all
of our boys. Plus a fun Dutch Oven demonstration
and cook-off, Cub Scout Scavenger Hunt, a rope
bridge, and presentations of our other Balboa
Oaks District camping events - and lots of other
fun things in store - just you wait!
WEBELOS To Boy Scouts
Congratulations to our Webelos IIs who will bridge over to Boy Scouts this month. Seeing
these boys grow from tiny Tigers into full fledged Boy Scouts is amazing to their den leaders,
parents and all who know them. The Pack will be sad to see them leave, but excited for their
next steps in their scout careers. We wish them well and look forward to seeing them as Eagle
Scouts in a few years.
Scout Stories
Getting the Hang of Hiking
My family and I went hiking last spring in the Angeles Crest
Mountains. I wanted to tell you about this event because I
highly enjoyed it and it shows my bravery as a cub scout. On
this hike, I went in the forest and saw a beautiful waterfall.
I told my brother and my parents to stop there so we can
play at the waterfall and try to catch frogs swimming in the
stream. We also saw old trees there that we were able to
climb. We were very brave when we found a rope because
we used it to swing across the river. At first, it was very
bumpy and we were scatting along the river. Then we got
the hang of it (no pun intended) and we were eventually able
to glide across the river, except for the times we crashed into the rocks. These are some of the
things I did to prove my bravery.
Brave: Not being afraid of failure and facing your fears.

Super Ski Trip
This is about my first and brave skiing experience. First, I
needed to go get my ski boots. Second, I rented my skis and
my ski poles. After that, my family and I went to see our ski
instructor for our first lesson. We skied down a few courses
with the instructor then we were out on our own! I went up
the ski lift twice which led to a large hill. On my first time
down the slope, I was skiing down very fast. I may have even
caught air! However, on my second attempt, I fell down and
injured my lip. I still had the time of my life and I can’t wait
to go back again. I think showed bravery going down a ski
slope at 30 mph!

Monster Jam
On Saturday, February 7, I went with my mom and dad to
Monster Jam in Anaheim. It is a Monster truck rally. The show
was competition and free style. Some of the trucks were Max
D, Madusa, Grave Digger, Monster Mutt, Monster Energy, El
Toro Loco, Lucas Oil, Zombie and a few others. My favorite
truck was Grave Digger, but Max D won. Madusa is a pink
truck driven by a woman who was brave to do a back flip off
the wall. She was the only one to land a flip. Her back wheel
got stuck, but it was really cool. The reason Max D won is
because when he landed on his side he spun himself upright...
twice! He looked like a break dancer. This was my first time
at Monster Jam. I want to go back next year and bring my
brother Steven and my friend Nick because they would really like it.

Did you or your den do something really interesting? Please submit your story and pictures to
your den leader and you could star in your own story too!
A Scout is Helpful
A scout is 12 things according to the Scout Law.
Some are difficult to be and some are easy. “Helpful”
is certainly an easy one. How are you helpful? Do
you help you teacher by keeping your desk clean?
Do you help your parents by cleaning your room
or the house? Do you help your friends by sharing
your lunch?
Being helpful means being concerned about other
people and doing things for other people, without
pay or reward. What was the last helpful thing you
did, without asking for anything in return?
Why don’t you take a “helpful oath?” You can
decide however you want to be helpful, and then do
it. Don’t ask for anything in return and just do your
helpful chore when it will be most helpful.
Monster Jam 2015!
One of the benefits of selling popcorn as well as Pack 415 does, is that we get to spluge on a
fun event just for ourselves.
This year we got to all go to see Monster Jam in Angel Stadium. Tons of dirt were trucked in,
a huge track was built and major jumps were installed. Giant monster trucks raced around the
track then showed off their driving talents with jumps, spins and even full fledged flips. These
trucks danced to the point of falling apart. Some flipped over, others caught fire, but all were
impressive. The Pack loved it!
The boys were able to go into the pits and check out the trucks and drivers up close and
personal. Some got to go into the midget racers and even write on the demolition derby cars.
It was truly a night to remember for all who were able to join.
USS Iowa Overnight Trip
In 1942 a number of battleships were built to fight the Axis powers in World War II. One of
those ships is berthed in San Pedro and is now a floating museum. The Pack was able to take
a weekend and have a behind the scenes tour the USS Iowa. We ate dinner and breakfast in
the enlisted mess and sleep in the same beds enlisted men slept in.
The boys not only saw the normal tour, but were able to visit the ships brig (jail) and
barbershop. An early morning meant seeing the sun rise over the Vincent Thomas Bridge
before a breakfast of eggs, bacon and pancakes.
The boys all had a great time.
Build Something!
One of the Wolf requirements is to build
something useful. Most boys build a simple
tool carrier or bird house, but Andrew B.
took building to a whole new level. His
wooden wheelbarrow is nearly bigger than
he is! It now sits majestically in his parents
yard holding flowers and plants for all to
see.
Great job Andrew!
