background
the brainwave story
Brainwave Australia was established
in 1994 to support the treatment and
care of children suffering from brain
illnesses and injuries.
Brainwave is the only Australian
charity to focus on this area, known
as paediatric neuroscience.
It is an area that receives scant
government support at any level, and
it covers a wide range of disorders that
include brain tumours, autism, epilepsy,
muscular dystrophy, strokes, childhood
multiple sclerosis and acquired
brain injuries.
In the last year alone, Brainwave
Australia has worked with and
supported over 800 families.
Our role reaches beyond the care of the
sick child; we offer support to the whole
family with in-home rehabilitation and
vital equipment.
the FOUNDATION 40 initiative
Our initiatives assist children being
discharged from hospital sooner.
This not only reduces the financial
and bed-day stresses in hospitals, but
there is strong evidence to suggest that
children recover better and quicker in
their own home environment – provided
that the correct support mechanisms
are in place.
Additionally, Brainwave’s various Care
Programs provide opportunities for
families to meet other families in similar
situations, empowering them to build
a vital support network.
This would not be possible without
our Programs.

key support services
• Purchase of mobility equipment
for home care and rehabilitation
e.g. wheelchairs, pressure
mattresses, feeding equipment
and bathing aids
• Assistance with home and
vehicle modifications to suit
wheelchairs and other
rehabilitation equipment
• Provision of Care Programs such
as family days, family camps,
parents dinners and Christmas
parties, all for networking and
mutual support
• Provision of parent support
programs in local communities
the FOUNDATION 40 initiative
• Funding for ongoing physical
therapies. We help bridge the
gap financially while a family is
dealing with the burdens of
coping with a very sick child e.g.
assistance with utility accounts,
as either one or both parents
often need to give up full time
work for a significant period
• Online support via our web
forum ‘Brainspace’
• We work to empower families
to cope with and take control
of their own unique situation.

Tara’s family hit a kangaroo in their family car which had been modified
for her wheelchair. Insurance covered the replacement of the car, but
not the cost of transferring the wheelchair hoist to the new car.
Brainwave covered those costs - $4,461.

Fundraising costs 2012

Net revenue 2012

Care Programs and Mobility Equipment 2012

As you can see clearly in these figures,
Brainwave runs a very “tight ship”
financially, with a high level of recipient
funding cf. total revenue. Infact, our
recipient funding exceeds our legal
requirements by more than 20%.
the FOUNDATION 40 initiative
However, as a smaller charity, we know
that operation is too “hand-to-mouth.”
For many years we have raised and
distributed funds efficiently, but our
day-to-day operation has tended to be
largely focused on helping the families
- “Money In – Money Out.” We have
not had the firm financial building blocks
in place for the future, and our current
Board’s objective is to create and build
a strong capital base to take Brainwave
to a new level of service.
This strong capital base would cover
Brainwave’s annual running costs –
freeing up the funds we raise for greater
family support, both in the areas of
rehabilitation equipment and our
essential Care Programs.

One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car
I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in
my bank account, or what my clothes looked like . . .
But one hundred years from now, the world will be a little better
because I was important in the life of a child.

FOUNDATION 40
a word from the
brainwave founder
It seems only a few
years ago we held the
first Brainwave Gala Ball
to raise funds for those
children and families
caught up in the
medical world of
Neuroscience.
the FOUNDATION 40 initiative
chairman’s
message
It is in fact 19 years ago, and our focus
has been very much centred on children
who suffer with any form of brain illness
and their families who care for them.
Our work has expanded to NSW and
through our online web forum families
as far away as Darwin are able to stay
in touch with others around the country.
To ensure the continuation of Brainwave
in this very competitive charity market
we are now seeking help to develop
a capital base which will mean 1000’s
of families Australia wide will continue
to have a voice in the community and
the support through Brainwave Care
Programs to care for their children.
That Brainwave has continued without
any Government financial support and
been funded solely on the hard work of
a very small team, dedicated volunteers,
external fundraising groups, company
sponsorships, Trust & Foundations and
an active board of directors is a tribute
to all those who have ever helped.
Your commitment to Foundation 40
will mean the work of others over the
past 19 years will continue to grow and
expand and ensure financial security
well into the future.
The first 8 years of Brainwave’s work,
saw the charity being run solely by
volunteers with no paid staff at all, this
is also a tribute to those who dedicated
themselves to this cause and to help
families that we all knew did not have
a cohesive voice in the community.
Please help us to continue to make
a difference in the lives of some very
special children and their families.
Josephine Nicholls
Foundation 40 is the most
important initiative since
Brainwave’s inception in 1994.
We need to build a stronger capital
base, something that we have never
had despite the good work we have
done. We need it to build a much
firmer foundation for our charity
going forward and to ensure that our
services reach more families in need.
We feel that the unique concept
of Foundation 40 will appeal to our
valued supporters and sponsors,
and that our target of $1m over five
years is more than achievable.
Thank you for considering
Foundation 40.
