March 2015 Club Newsletter

BRIS SUP CLUB NEWS 1 ST Edition 2015: Editor Andy Rowland A WORD FROM MR PRESIDENT March Message from "The Prez"
Well the year is well under way and the club has already had plenty of activity.
Firstly we cracked the 120-member mark in the first two months of the year. This is 35 more than for
the entire 2014-year. This is a huge milestone...200 members here we come.
I think we are now the envy of other clubs with a good healthy membership and lots of activity. This is
testament to the passion we all have for the sport.
As a club we have explored some new places like Enoggera Reservoir and Lake Kurwongbah. These
are both stunning locations for a flat-water paddle and hence large turnouts at each.
The Summer BOP Series is due to finish soon with a few contenders for the title. Watch this space for
our next series champion.
CLUB FACT The calendar has been full with plenty of social paddles and races most weekends. The challenge is
trying to decide which event(s) to attend. Hopefully we can move to a combined calendar of events
with the other clubs soon.
Don't forget that the more input from members the better and stronger the club will
be. If you haven't helped out with one of the race series then please stick your
hands up and take the load of some of the regular organizers.
And remember to "Stand Up to Stand Out".
James Evison
Club President SOCIAL SCENE, By Krissie This year the club has appointed an official 'social committee' to step up the social
paddles for 2015.
So far we have had 3 really successful Club Social paddles with plenty more planned
for the rest of the year to places like Jacobs Well, Coochie, SUP surfing at Currumbin
and Somerset Dam to name a few.
The BrisSUP social scene kicked off the year with an Australian Day SUP/Picnic at
Bribie Island. We had about 30 adults and children enjoying the long weekend with
some new faces that joined us. One of our new club members to be hooked by what
he saw that day was Lawrence. He was there with his dog and saw us all having a
great time, went out the next week, bought a SUP and turned up at our regular
#funfriday paddles to introduce himself.....Lawrence has been to EVERY event
since!!!
Next was our two fresh water paddles in Brisbane with very large numbers at both 3040 SUP'ers. More new faces and names to remember and two fantastic destinations.
Enoggera Reservoir was absolutely beautiful with water as smooth as glass. It's a
lovely and peaceful place to paddle with the water a short walk from the car park. I
highly recommend paddling on this hidden Brisbane gem.
Lake Kurwongbah was a pleasant surprise to me and also very central to Brisbane's
northern and southern suburbs. Stef and I went on a recon mission to explore a
possible social paddle event and spent a few hours paddling, sitting, cooling off,
practicing our buoy turns (ha-ha) and enjoying the surrounds. We left that day excited
to show everyone what we had just seen.
We locked in a date and the Social Paddle/BOP was organized, complete with a
mobile coffee van and shared morning tea. It was a great morning and I'm very keen
to go back there soon.
Our next big Social Paddle will be at Hinze Dam on Sunday 29th March at 9am. Again
this one will start with a cruisey paddle for a few hours followed by a group morning
tea. Gold Coast SUP Club SUPSA will be joining us for some social time on the
water. A friendly and relaxing paddle before we go head to head against them at 12
Towers a week later. All level of paddlers are welcome and encouraged to this event.
If you have any ideas for group paddles please let me know and we can add them to
our calendar.
Always keep your eye on the Facebook page for impromptu weekend or mid week
paddles to join and if you are going out and want some company post it.. You never
know you may have 20 people turn up to go with you!
Thanks to the social team, Stef, Frank, Steve, Robbo and Alanah, always there to
brainstorm with and help out. 2 •

3 NOOSA BOP REVIEW
So once again the BrisSUP crew travel far and wide to get their SUP
Fix. This time to the Noosa Bop, at Noosa Heads.
This yearly event, part of the Noosa festival of Surf, is fast becoming
Another sup- vent that is a "must do" for Sup racers, and those wanting
To try their first SUP BOP (technical race) in pristine waters, and
Without the huge surf that can sometimes accompany BOP's held in other
Locations across our coastline.
After the hype generated on Facebook and the Internet by the events
Organiser, and frothing SUP maniac Paul "Jonesy" Jones, the BrisSUP crew
Had a massive turnout of not just people racing, but friends and family
Also attending to support us all.
The location as most of you know is iconic, pristine, and one of the
Best spots to SUP in QLD, and on the day it didn't disappoint. The surf
Flattened right out, and turned into "Lake Noosa". Waves were measured
In inches not feet, and for the BrisSUP crew, looked a whole lot calmer
Than anything we would do at Raby Bay or Bells Beach!
The event organisers, as always, had everything running smoothly. The
Flat surf conditions meant that the amateur course back up, of a 'ocean
Start’ was not required. The pro's started off the line with the
Amateurs around 5m behind them. It was an awesome sight to see and to be
A part of the start as everyone raced off into the ocean. It’s not until
You go to some of these bigger events, you see and realize just how
Quick the pro guys and girl’s race into that water and get to full speed.
The front pack of racers were off to a blistering start, and you could
See pretty quickly this was turning into a flat-water sprint for them.
BrisSUP's Oliver Murphy-Kurth was right amongst the front runners, and
Really impressed with how fast he was. There was some bump and barge, as
You would expect in a BOP at the turns, but all was handled in good
Spirit, and let’s face it, that's what makes a BOP so much fun!
Was great to see all the BrisSUP entrants powering around the course,
And everyone had a smile on their face, well some looked like smiles,
Maybe it was more a grimace...not sure. For those that did there very
First pro BOP this was a great effort, and even more reason to continue
The BrisSUP BOP series, and to come along and have a go if you haven't
Before.
A massive congratulations to all who entered, and a huge thank you to
Those that came up and supported the Brissy racers, the cheers and
Applause could be heard very well around the course!
A special mention also to Oliver Murphy-Kurth, 6th overall in a field of
This quality shows just how good this guy is, and he may surely become
BrisSUP's first Pro racer, and Kenzie Carlstrom, in her first race,
Takes out 1st place in the Amateur women's event!
Cheers Nick.

The majority of Stand up Paddling our members do is in the ocean, we are fortunate to have the b eautiful Moreton bay areas to get out and enjoy on a regular basis like Manly, Cleveland and Green island, or Shorncliffe and Suttons beach. One thing to remember is even on a glassy Moreton Bay day it is still an ocean and an ocean can turn at any moment. Boaties with more than 40 years experience still come unstuck in these rapidly changing waters. Here is some tips to remember to think about before and while paddling next time. Always wear a leash; having 14 foot of foam attached to you is the best safety device one could want. Always carry water and a snack, Salt water dries the mouth and the sun zaps your energy quick. Take your phone, there are unlimited types of waterproof cases and bags on the market, to be double sure once in the case put it inside two good quality glad b ags. Inside of your backpack. Have a GPS app installed in your phone, if ever in trouble you can tell authorities exactly where you are. Before paddling tell loved ones the general area you are planning on paddling, if in a group make sure you have other group members numbers incase you get separated. Check tides and wind forecasts before going out. BOM.gov.au is the most accurate site you can get, BOM has a great marine section with live readings of areas in Moreton Bay and accurate modeling for short-‐
term future. Know your ability. Down winding or even long cruisey ocean paddles sound enticing, but understand your own ability. It isn’t like going for a run with a group and getting tired and just walking back home. Once in the ocean there are no second chances. A bumpy ocean can tire the fittest of people quickly. MULLUM 2 BRUNS PADDLE SUPPORT THE LOCALS THAT SUPPORT YOU Ok BrisSup members, this is the social race event of the year. 7 PATICO AUTOMOTIVE 12 TOWERS SUP RACE WEEKEND Due to crazy weather last month that a little cat5 cyclone up north produced the PATICO AUTOMOTIVE 12 TOWERS SUP RACE had to be postponed. New dates have been locked in and event organizers have come up with a plan to produce optimal conditions for the race. The event will now be held over the Easter long weekend Friday 3rd April to Monday 6th April. What this means is this gives the organizers a 4-‐day window to select the best day to race a week or less out to run the traditional distance 12 Towers Race. This is a master stroke by event organisers as the biggest feedback you get by competitors is “we want to race in the best conditions at the time” Often you have seen races run on the ear marked day of for example Sunday but the Saturday had better conditions. This way the competitors win. Get excited for this event BrisSup fans if you haven’t made Easter long weekend plans you now have, if you have made plans cancel all plans as this is the biggest event on the SUP calendar in QLD to date and with our support it is going to easily grow into the biggest SUP event in Australia within no time. Organizers will be assessing conditions and forecasts as much as possible and if conditions are looking stable we will hopefully have confirmation of what day the races will be on nice and early so you can work the race around the rest of the long weekend plans.. (Lets face it what else will you all be doing for the other 3 days anyway. We live in QLD its April and we are all addicted to SUP. We will all be on the water paddling so make one of the days a paddle on the G.C.) There is a race for all abilities. For anyone competent in the ocean the Traditional 12 Towers race is for you 14km of bumps to play on all the way from Kirra to Burleigh. If 14km isn’t for you they have a short course 5 to 6 km race. Or if BOP is more you’re thing there will be a Pro and amateur BOP race held at Burleigh. Jump on the fantastic website www.12towers.com for all the latest info and entry if you hadn’t already entered for the event. 8 EDITORS NOTE Great start to the year for the club. 120+ members is fantastic and very positive. I keep thinking imagine if we managed to get every single member to attend a social or a club race on the same d ay. We would be knocking on the doors of the biggest participation for a SUP event in Australia and that's just our club members. I know it's a long shot as everyone has busy lives and there are only 52 weekends in the year and most people have 63 of them booked out with things to do already. I’m going to throw it out there though to the members lets put a plan in place a long term plan lets come u p with a date late 2015 or early 2016 and have a member day lets do our best to all make it down on the decided date and make a day of it. Imagine 120+ BrisSup members in BrisSup shirts on a beach and out on the water all at once.. I can hear the corporate sponsors knocking on the door already. Big welcome to all the new members of the club, I haven't met many of you as I myself lead a busy life though from all reports everyone is gelling well together and have been very inviting to all new comers to the club. The club committee is working very hard in the background organizing events for all of us to enjoy and there are some big things in the works for 2015 and beyond. I myself am looking forward to the most is the 2015 Tri-‐
Series. Nick McDonald threw together a great interclub event in a matter of weeks last year and I know he is busy working away to make this series and event something huge in QLD. We as a club have developed a fantastic relationship with our Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast clubs SUPSA and Sunshine coast Stand up Paddleboard club and all involved loved the series last year and are eager to find out details about this years events. Events like the tri-‐series don't just fall off the tree next to the money tree in the b ack yard though it takes a lot of people and a lot of time and some money to make these things happen so members if you have the time put your hand up and offer what you can when you can to the club. If you have a business a small sponsorship goes long long way or if you work for a company that you believe would be willing to help out in any way or form speak up and lets get talking. Thank you to all past and current sponsors every little bit helps. See you all out on the water. 9
