Term 2 Week 1
DATE CLAIMERS
This morning our school combined with Burnside State High
to commemorate ANZAC Day, which is of course officially
tomorrow. It was a beautiful service and our children from
Prep to Year 6 demonstrated exceptional behaviour
throughout the ceremony.

These four students, Ny-Khaye, Tahlia, Scarlett and Paris
spoke on behalf of our school at the event. All classes from
our school laid wreaths and floral tributes.
Student Absence Line 54410860
This is a more convenient way to let the school
know if your child is away. Leave your child’s
name, class and the reason they are not at school.
ANZAC Parade
Students marching in
the ANZAC Parade in
Nambour on Saturday
25 April must be at
the assembly area in
Howard Street (in
front of Keyline Realty) by 8.30am. We would love to have 100 students
at least march as it is the 100th Anniversary. Remember all students must wear correct school uniform and
a hat.
Cross Country Medallions
These will be presented on Parade on the 4th May.
LEST WE FORGET.
Remember all children are invited to march in the ANZAC
parade tomorrow.

Targeted Support
During Term 1, teachers were asked to review their class literacy and numeracy data to identify areas where additional
targeted support may be required. Based on their data analysis, teachers developed evidence-based plans to address areas of specific learning need for their class or year level. The outcome has been the employment of four additional
teacher aides strategically timetabled across the school to provide additional in class targeted support. This has been
funded through the Great Results Guarantee program which commenced in 2014. Based on the data analysis and targeted plans, we
will be better equipped to monitor and review student achievement through the term.
Another exciting development towards the end of Term 1 saw our classroom teachers and SEP Teachers come off line for year lev el
planning with our Literacy and Numeracy Coaches. The whole day planning sessions have enabled our teachers to begin the term with
consistent lesson plans across each year level. The feedback from staff has been extremely positive and will become a regular part of our
professional development and planning each term.
Lunch Clubs
Thank you to the teachers who have offered to run Lunch Clubs. Apart from giving students a greater range of lunchtime play options,
supervised Lunch Clubs help take the pressure off transitions and busy playgrounds. To date we have Choir, Drama, Games, Gardening,
ICT and Japanese clubs running or starting next week. Over the coming weeks more lunch clubs will be commencing.
Student Leaders
A huge thank you to our Student Leaders for the contribution they are making everyday in our school. Each student leader has offered to
give up one lunch break each week to provide peer support for students in the Prep and Junior Playgrounds or support teachers during
Lunch Clubs.

Library News
Welcome back families to term 2! We are now fast approaching busy times for events in the library starting in May.
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year NSS takes place on
Wednesday 27 May at 11am (AEST) and our school has once again registered to join in by sharing The Brothers Quibble written by Aaron Blabey.
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state wide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to
Year 9 and children attending an approved kindergarten program or long day care centre.
The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the
challenge children and students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts. This challenge commences May 19 th and finishes 28th August.
Children and students can participate in the challenge within their school by reading their designated number of books. Prep to 4 read 20
books and Year 5-6 read 15 books.
Children and students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed
by the Premier of Queensland.
Once again Burnside State School year 6’s has registered to enter and compete in the Interschool Readers’ Cup Challenge.
This competition is held at the Immanuel Lutheran College on Wednesday 20 th May. Each school is represented by a team of
4 students, who will sit before a panel and answer questions pertaining to 4x fiction books and 1x picture book.
The team will them if successful advance through to the next level of questioning, until elimination and the winning team is
chosen.
A huge thankyou to families for supporting our Book Club and Book Fair held last term. In Book club we sold $1,600 worth of books
and Book Fair we sold $2,400 worth of books. Between the two events we were able to buy over $1,000 worth of new books for our library!
I will put reminders for the above important dates as they begin to approach.
