Did You Know?
Chronic stress occurs
when life stressors are
unrelenting. Stress can be
intense and chronic from one
big stressor or can accumulate
from many small stressors and
you are unable to recuperate
from any one of them.
Chronic stress inhibits the
immune system, can prevent
proper healing and negatively
impacts our mood.

The Creative Process
Connecting through Knitting
Mondays, April 6, 20, May 4, 18,
June 1, 15, 10:00 - 12:00 p.m.
Elinor Bayliss and Audrey Van Eeckhout
Knitting can be a relaxing hobby
that reduces stress and keeps one
centered in the present moment. The
CWC knitting group provides a safe
environment to connect with others
who are experiencing cancer in their
lives. No experience necessary—a
knitting teacher is present at every
class. Yarn donations welcomed.
Use diaphragmatic breathing
to reduce symptoms of stress.
Knitting has Health Benefits!
Have you ever wondered why people
who knit are calm? It turns out that the
repetitive actions needed for knitting
can bring on the “relaxation response” in
the body which is quite similar to what
people experience with techniques such
as repetitive prayer, yoga, meditation,
Tai Chi, and other meditative
disciplines. Knitting trains the mind
to be focused on the present moment.
Research at the Harvard Medical School
Mind/Body Institute has found that
when an individual is knitting, blood
pressure drops and heart rate can drop
to 11 beats a minute.
1. Find a quiet time and place.
2. Get comfortable.
3. Place one hand on your
abdomen and one on your
chest and notice how they
rise on the inhale and fall on
the exhale.
4. Inhale deeply (if possible)
through the nose and exhale
through the mouth with
pursed lips.
5. Take a few long slow deep
breaths that raise and lower
your abdomen.
6. Take a few moments to
breathe with normal intensity.
7. If you would like to continue,
take a few deep breaths then
breathe for a few minutes at
normal intensity and repeat
until you are very relaxed.
8. Notice when your mind
wanders (it will) and come
back to focusing on only
breathing.
Meditation Offerings

Did You Know?
When we meditate on a regular basis it changes the
structure of our brain in positive ways.
• Regular meditation practice helps in coping with anxiety
and depression.
• Meditation practice teaches meditators how to
manage pain.
• Regular meditation practice cultivates a sense of overall
well-being regardless of life challenges.
• Meditation develops a stable and clear mind, emotional
balance, compassion and mindfulness.
• Negative emotions stress us out and stress has a negative
impact on the immune system. Meditation helps us
be aware of and manage our negative emotions which
reduces our stress reaction.
• Evidence exists that meditation practice, which enhances
overall wellbeing, may diminish inflammation and
other biological stressors. These findings suggest that
meditation may slow cellular aging.
