Norwegian House Society’s
AVISA
Spring 2015 edition
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It has been a year now that I have served as president of Norwegian House Society. It was a year in which I did not
accomplish as much as I had planned, but that was due to health issues, including major surgery. Throughout it, I managed not to miss any of our Board meetings. The NHS Board is comprised of 14 dedicated volunteers, whom I would
like to thank for all of their Volunteerism!
The Raspeball dinner held in February was a great success, and was a sell-out. Those that worked on it were a combination of new and old committee members. We appreciate the former committee members willing to assist and teach to
ensure that our annual Raspeball dinner continues into the future.
Our next event will be the Munin Pork Dinner on March 20th. This is a major fundraiser for the Munin Viking ship,
which is currently at the Scandinavian Centre undergoing some much needed “dry dock” repairs. We hope to have her
back in the water sometime soon, so that she can be out sailing again. The Pork Dinner is always a great time, so mark
your calendars and get your tickets early. Food, entertainment, camaraderie …. guaranteed to be a good time, well worth attending. We are also
in the early planning stages for the 17th May dinner. It will be held on Sunday, May 17th and we hope that it will also be very well attended. So,
dust off your bunad and watch for more details. These events are all organized and put on by volunteers, and it is a little disheartening when the
attendance is not what was expected, so make sure that you support the events.
If you would like to contact NHS, we have a new email. It is [email protected] If you would like to be added to an email list to
receive news and events notices, please forward your email address to us. If you previously received emails of upcoming events in between the
quarterly Avisa’s, and no longer receive them, it may be that we do not have a current email address for you? We will “blind copy” the notices
so others will not see your email address when it is sent out as a group.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held March 25th at 7 p.m. It is your organization! Come out and learn what is happening at the Centre and
with Norwegian House Society. There will be coffee and “goodies” served and I hope to see a lot of our members there.
Best regards,
regards Ron Stubbings, President, Norwegian House Society

Big Bonuses for Norwegian Pensioners
Living in Canada
With Thanks to Else Vea
This story needs telling. In 1991 Else set about attempting to get a fair
pension for her husband Otto. This meant a new computer, endless
phone calls, and over time, two Norwegian Lawyers, all at her own
expense.
Otto passed away in 2008 but by this time Else was aware that there
were many more Norwegians caught in this predicament so she continued working for them. I, for one, am well aware just how much time and
effort hshe put in.
In January 2014, all her hard work paid off as Norway finally signed an
agreement with the Canadian governmentregarding pensions. These
Norwegians had been unfairly treated. I understand that in the Fall of
2014 compensations in the amounts of $60,000 to $100,000 started
coming to these people. Can you believe their joy with this great windfall!!
From 1991 to 2014, 23 years and Else Vea never gave up on her quest
for justice for all of them. Her contribution of time and money and
“brain drain”, is just amazing.
ThankThank-you Else,
Marg Kirsebom
“Viking Ship Munin is
Looking to Return to the Sea”
Munin is a 40 foot long replica of a Viking Longship built in Burnaby and sailed mostly in English Bay near Vancouver.
She is not at her usual moorage in Heritage Harbour at the Maritime museum, since she was pulled out of the water in November. At present, she is
at the Scandinavian Centre awaiting repairs and maintenance.
The ship is a half-scale replica of the Gokstad, built some 1000
years ago, found buried in eastern Norway and on display in Oslo. A square
sail has technology that has been around since long before the Vikings and
proves to be a very safe, quick, effective rig. Both are very elegant to look at
and the Munin is a joy to sail.
Munin developed trouble with her plumbing during the Fall rainy
season and had to be pulled out of the sea. Once her repairs are complete
we’ll be looking for a good secure dock to moor her at, near good sailing
waters, preferably English Bay. This is an ideal place for us because it’s
protected and yet open enough for a great challenging venture. It’s also an
easy place for our guests to find us.
The mandate for building the ship included taking out the public
and using her as an educational vessel. We teach sailing, navigation, Viking
history and offer a living history experience, letting folks help out as weather
and sea conditions permit. Munin has taken thousands of new and seasoned
sailors out for a very enjoyable trip.
Since Munin is an open boat, we need safe dry secure storage for
our gear, equipment and the sail. This is not possible onboard so we are
looking for a small shed near where the ship will dock. Munin also needs to
have security at her dock at the end of the day, so we’ll not find graffiti or
fishing gear onboard on our return.
We are currently actively looking for a sponsor or sponsors who
can help us out with the increasing cost of moorage, insurance and upkeep. It
costs about $18,000 annually to keep Munin in ship shape. Munin is owned
by the Norwegian House Society, part of the bigger organization, Scandinavian Community Centre, both non-profit organizations. We are always fundraising and looking for donations and help with her upkeep.
Once materials that are ordered have arrived, we can schedule
repairs. We are looking for volunteers to help out. All levels of skill are appreciated—carpentry, painting, reporting and photography. More urgently
we are looking for a dock slip and sponsors. Please contact us asap if you or
someone you know can help in any way.
