PRINCIPAL’S PEN
2015 Cross Country
Last week we had an extremely successful Cross Country Carnival on
Wednesday. Thank you to the many parents who came along for this event.
Unfortunately I was away ill and missed it. I was very disappointed. I was told the
students displayed great behaviour, sportsmanship and fitness. Well Done! Thank you to
Mrs Findlay and Mr Skelton for all the work you did preparing for our Cross Country. Thank
you also to our P&C for providing every participant with an ice block. A very big Thank you
must also go to our House Captains for their fabulous leadership while preparing for and
assisting with the coordination of the Cross Country. You did a great job!

NAPLAN Testing
This week our Year 3 & Year 5 students are completing the NAPLAN Assessments. These
are being conducted Tuesday 12.05.15, Wednesday 13.05.15 and Thursday 14.05.15. The
students have done a great job of approaching the tests with calm and confidence. We have
encouraged them to simply do the best they can. We have recommended that students
arrive before 8:50am so they can commence the tests on time and avoid the flustered feeling
that comes when we run late. We will be attempting to catch up students who are away on
test day before the test period closes on Friday. Further NAPLAN information for parents and
carers is available online. Please contact the school if you have any questions about your
child participating in NAPLAN testing.
Mothers’ Day Stall
Last week our P&C organised a fabulous Mothers’ Day Stall. We are so very lucky to have
this kind, generous group of people who give up their own time to make sure these kinds of
events happen for Canungra State School students. Without them we would not have had a
Mothers’ Day Stall. Thank you to our fabulous P&C members for your time and effort with
these events. You add enormous value to our school and we are all very grateful.

Canungra State School’s Green Team featuring on ‘The Great South East’
Last Thursday a film crew came to Canungra SS to film a short segment about our Green
Team for Channel 7’s ‘Great South East’ program. The crew were astonished by how well
our Green Team Student Leaders listened and followed instructions, communicated and
cooperated with each other. I was very proud of them. They did an outstanding job during
the filming. Well done Hayley 4B, Charlee 4B, Connor 5A, Cooper 5B, Mia 6A, Charlie 6B. I
would also like to thank Mrs Williams for the time and effort she contributes to our Green
Team and her involvement with the filmed segment.
The Producer informed me that the anticipated airing date for the segment is Sunday 31st
May. She did say that it is possible this could change. She said she will email the definite
date as the date got closer. I will share any new information as I receive it.

Ice Blocks
PHONE CALLS
Students can purchase an
ice block EVERY TUESDAY
at 2nd break for 50c. These
are sold from the hall kitchen
for 10 minutes only.
The last couple of weeks the
office has been inundated with
parents ringing regarding pick up
or YMCA change of plans.

We understand this can’t be
helped sometimes, could you please
ensure that your children are
aware of picking up arrangements
before they leave home in the
mornings as this is very disruptive
to the teachers and office staff.

History Assessment How trains have changed over time.

Since they’ve been invented, trains
have changed extremely. They’ve
been changed by their shape, speed
and the fuel that powers them. In
the past trains were powered by coal
which produced steam but also made
smoke which makes the air terrible
to breathe. Nowadays trains are
powered by electricity and don’t
make smoke so the air is clean to
breathe. In the past trains were
quite slow but wow, they’re fast now!
Since they run on electricity, they
can go much faster. In the olden
days trains had a completely vertical
front but now they have sleek,
diagonal and horizontal fronts, which
makes them more aerodynamic and
increase their speed.

Sensei’s Corner
Thanks again to our wonderful LOTE
teacher, Mrs Jo Fullerton, for
organising
Sensei’s
Corner,
a
newsletter competition which provides
all students with the opportunity to
learn and have fun at the same time.
Each week there will be a quiz and
activity for students to complete.
Students can then write their name,
class and the answer to the quiz on a
piece of paper and put that in the box
provided in the office. Then on parade
each week one lucky winner’s name
will be pulled from the box and receive
a prize.

Thank you to all of the staff, children and families that have made
myself and Ness feel so welcome over the last few weeks. We are
very passionate about providing the highest quality of care for your
children so all suggestions and feedback will be appreciated.
What we’ve been doing:
YMCA Canungra OSHC
The children at YMCA participated in a great variety of fun and
engaging activities. Mother’s day brought on many beautiful craft
activities. The children made Damper and learnt all about the
Indigenous history in a fun outdoor picnic. Last Friday we made
Hawaiian pizzas which was most defiantly a hit! The children have
responded very well to the staff change over and have been very busy
contributing to the changes we have made to our room.

Fun filled afternoon YMCA has

Cost is only $40 for a 6 week program. Or you can opt for $7.50 per

This term the sports will be all about AFL and NRL ball sports as this
is what the children have chosen.
