Guidelines for applicants
Please ensure that you have read and understood the following information
before you complete the scholarship application form.
Introduction
Carclew funds activities for, by and with young people.
Carclew encourages participation and excellence in the arts
through a range of scholarships, grants and funding programs.
Carclew Scholarships aim to support the professional
development of SA artists aged 26 and under in writing,
performing arts, visual arts and film and new media.
Carclew staff are available to provide information and support
for those applying for the Carclew Scholarships.
All Carclew programs endeavour to be equitable and accessible.

Scholarship Purpose

Carclew Scholarships
support the professional
development of young
artists who demonstrate
outstanding motivation,
talent and potential in their
artform or practice.
Carclew Scholarships are currently offered to young artists
practicing in the following fields:
Performing Arts
(Acting, Dance, Direction, Choreography, Music, Circus,
Performance etc)
Visual Arts
(Sculpture, Drawing, Painting, Digital, Photographic, Design,
Ceramic, Glass, Crafts etc)
Creative Writing
(Original creative writing: Novels, Scripts, Poetry, Prose, Rhyme,
Stories, Plays, Film Scripts etc)
Film and New Media
(Film-Producing /Directing, Script Writing and Development,
Documentaries, Cinematography, Animation, Trans-media
Production, Biotechnology + Arts, Virtual World and Gaming,
Video Art, Research into new technologies for Screen and Media
work etc)

Dame Ruby Litchfield
Scholarship
(Performing Arts)
Established by the South
Australian Government in
1994 to pay tribute to Dame
Ruby’s lifelong commitment
to ensuring young people’s
active participation in the
arts, this scholarship is
offered once a year to assist
a young South Australian
with unique professional
development and/or
specialist training in the
performing arts.
The value of the
scholarship is $12,500.
There is only one
scholarship per year.
The Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship supports professional
development activity such as:
A course of specialist study that falls outside the Austudy/
Abstudy Award.
Working with a high-profile performing arts company or
organisation.
An opportunity for an artist to engage in an apprenticeship or
mentorship with an established practitioner (or group) highly
regarded for their innovative contribution to performing arts.
The Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship will not support:
A course of study that falls within the Austudy/Abstudy award.
The purchase of equipment or expenditure for capital items.
A proposal based exclusively around attendance at performing
arts events – like festivals, arts markets etc.
Specific project activities – like general development of a
production or presentation of a concert.
The costs to complete study that you have already commenced
at the time of application (see Page 10 for details on
international courses).

Ruth Tuck Scholarship
(Visual Arts)
The Ruth Tuck Scholarship supports professional development
activity such as:
This scholarship has been
created to honour Ruth
Tuck’s enduring belief in
the value of young people’s
artistic skills and talents.
Established by the South
Australian Government in
1994, the scholarship is
offered once a year to
assist a young South
Australian to further their
professional development,
study and practice in the
field of visual arts.
A course of specialist study that falls outside the Austudy/
Abstudy Award.
The value of the
scholarship is $12,500.
There is only one
scholarship per year.
The purchase of equipment or expenditure for capital items.
Working with a high-profile visual arts organisation or gallery.
An opportunity for a young artist to engage in an apprenticeship
or mentorship with an established practitioner (or group) highly
regarded for their innovative contribution to visual arts.
The Ruth Tuck Scholarship will not support:
A course of study that falls within the Austudy/Abstudy award.
A proposal based exclusively around attendance at visual arts
events – like festivals, openings etc.
Specific project activities - like general development of
an exhibition.
The costs to complete study that you have already commenced
at the time of application (see Page 10 for details on
international courses).

Colin Thiele Scholarship
(Creative Writing)
The Colin Thiele Scholarship supports professional
development activity such as:
This scholarship honours
Colin Thiele, the highly
acclaimed South
Australian author. It is
offered once a year to
assist a young South
Australian writer to
further their professional
development, study and
practice in the field of
creative writing.
A course of specialist study that falls outside the Austudy/
Abstudy Award.
The value of the
scholarship is $12,500.
There is only one
scholarship per year.
The Colin Thiele Scholarship will not support:
Dedicated time allocated towards the pursuit of writing.
Undertaking a special activity to develop a piece of writing, such
as travel, research, training or contribution to editing costs.
Living allowance whilst undertaking a writing course.
A course of study that falls within the Austudy/Abstudy award.
A proposal based exclusively around attendance at literature
events – such as Writers’ Week, book launches etc.
The costs to complete study that you have already commenced
at the time of application (see Page 10 for details on
international courses).

Carclew Film and New
Media Scholarship
The Carclew Film and New Media Scholarship supports
professional development activity such as:
Established in 2011, this
scholarship is offered
once a year to assist a
young South Australian
filmmaker/new media
artist to further their
professional development,
study and practice in the
field of filmmaking and/or
new media.
A course of specialist study that falls outside the Austudy/
Abstudy Award.
The value of the
scholarship is $12,500.
There is only one
scholarship per year.
An attachment, internship, residency or mentorship with an
established practitioner (or company) highly regarded for their
innovative contribution to film and new media.
A living allowance whilst undertaking research and development.
The purchase of smaller items of equipment, however, only in
cases where it can be demonstrated that the equipment is
crucial to the professional development proposal and where it
can be demonstrated that the equipment cannot be hired for a
lesser rate than the cost of purchase. Purchase of smaller
items of equipment must not exceed $5,000.
The Carclew Film and New Media Scholarship will not support:
A course of study that falls within the Austudy/Abstudy award.
The purchase of larger items of equipment.
A proposal based exclusively around attendance at film and new
media events – like festivals, openings etc.
Project administration costs.
The costs to complete study that you have already commenced
at the time of application (see Page 10 for details on
international courses).

Purchase of smaller items of equipment which have a total
value greater than $5,000.

Eligibility

General eligibility
criteria for all applicants:
Be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in
Australia, and a current resident of South Australia.
Applicants must be 26
years of age or under at the
application closing date.
Be able to articulate their relationship and commitment to the
arts and cultural industries in South Australia, if the activity
does not take place in South Australia.
Carclew gives funding
priority to activity that
will benefit young South
Australian artists or
improve youth arts
opportunities in South
Australia. Preferred
applicants will therefore:
Specific eligibility
criteria for the Colin
Thiele Scholarship:
Applicants will need to have written work recognised
professionally. Ideally this means poems and/or short stories
published in a journal or magazine, or a script that has received a
public reading. However, applicants who believe they demonstrate
a strong commitment to or ability in the field of writing should
contact Carclew’s Funding Officer prior to applying.
Specific eligibility criteria
for the Carclew Film and
New Media Scholarship:
Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to their
specialist area and have their film and/or new media work
recognised professionally. Ideally this would include completion of
undergraduate study, being short listed for or winning an industry
based award or having work broadcast or included in a public
exhibition. However, applicants who believe they demonstrate a
strong commitment to or ability in the field of film and new media
should contact Carclew’s Funding Officer prior to applying.

Assessment Criteria

1. Does the application demonstrate a solid professional
development and/or training outcome?
2. If a course of study is proposed:
Does it fall outside the eligibility for the Austudy/Abstudy award?
Is there evidence of support from the institution?
3. If training is to be provided by an organisation or individual,
is there evidence of support?
4. Is the organisation or artist/mentor able to provide the
required level of skills development to enable the applicant
to realise the objectives of the proposed program?
5. Does the proposal demonstrate that it will develop the
current skills of the applicant?
6. Has the applicant demonstrated:
Outstanding motivation, talent and potential in their artform
or practice?
Commitment to the pursuance of high standards of artistic
achievement?
7. Is the level of financial support appropriate for the proposal?
8. Has the applicant demonstrated how this scholarship will
help them overcome barriers and/or meet challenges they
face in developing their art-form or practice?
9. Does the proposed activity demonstrate cultural benefits
for the applicant’s artistic community and for the South
Australian community?

Support Material

Your application must
contain:
A current curriculum vitae (CV).
Two references, including one from a person who is able to provide
specialist advice as a practitioner within their field.
Examples of work at a level that enables the Advisory Committee
to assess the applicant’s artistic ability.
Support material or examples of work may include URL/file links,
images, photos, video footage, scripts etc. All work should be
of a high quality. Maximum of six examples of work. Maximum
individual file size is 5MB, maximum total email size is 20MB. If
your files are over 5MB please provide a link/URL to view online.
Creative writing applicants are required to submit, as support
material, a sample (maximum 15 pages) of their writing in the
genre/s nominated in your intended scholarship proposal. You
should provide a sample that you feel best represents the literary
merit of your writing.
Film and New Media applicants are required to submit no more than
two of the following: 5 images in digital format, 5 pages of text or
other material, 5 min of video material, 5 min of audio material,
5 min of interactive material, 5 URLs.
A budget that includes travel costs, material costs, living allowance
and course fees. If the total cost of the budget exceeds the
scholarship amount, give details as to how the shortfall will be met.
If you are applying for a living allowance, please advise how you
require this to be allocated e.g. $3,000 of the scholarship to be
used for living allowance, allocating $150 per week for 20 weeks.

Applications are called for once a year for activity beginning
after 1 January the following year. Please check the closing date
on the current application form.
Academic Fees for Courses in the Northern Hemisphere:
International academic course fee payments made prior to 31
December by a successful scholarship applicant may be
reimbursed from scholarship funds. Should an applicant pay a
deposit to secure a placement within an academic institution in
the northern hemisphere it is at their own financial risk and will
not influence the scholarship Advisory Committee decision. This
does not apply to other professional development such as
internships or mentorships. Scholarship funds will be released
after 1 January each year.
Applications must be made on the correct application form.
Application forms and guidelines are available at carclew.com.au
Applicants must read the eligibility criteria, scholarship
guidelines and assessment criteria before completing the
application form.
Applicants are encouraged to establish their eligibility by
discussing their proposal with Carclew’s Funding Officer at least
six weeks in advance of the application due date.
It is highly recommended that you discuss your proposal with
Carclew. You can call to speak with staff in the first instance and
then, if necessary, have a face to face consultation with
Carclew’s Funding Officer to receive feedback on your draft
application. Advice should be sought as early as possible prior
to the closing date. No consultation appointments can be made
in the week prior to the closing date. Consultations will only go
ahead if you have submitted a draft application at least two days
prior to your appointment.
If you have previously received Carclew funding, you must
ensure that you have submitted a satisfactory acquittal report
before you can receive any more funding.

Failure to complete any aspect of the application form may
deem it ineligible.
Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Applications are assessed by category-specific Scholarship
Advisory Committees. Committee recommendations are
forwarded to the Carclew Board for endorsement and signed off
by the South Australian Minister for the Arts.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact Carclew to arrange
collection of support material after assessment. Support material
will be unavailable for collection after a six month period.
Applications are assessed by category-specific Scholarship
Advisory Committees. The recommendations of these committees
are forwarded to the Carclew for endorsement. The Committee
may request an interview with applicants or contact referees.
It is expected that applicants will receive notification of
outcomes by email in mid-October of the year that they applied.
Scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply for other
Carclew grants in the twelve month period that they are utilising
scholarship funds.
Successful candidates will be required to:
Meet with Carclew’s Funding Officer to finalise their
professional development plan prior to invoicing.
Provide a full artistic report/acquittal to Carclew within three
months of completion of the scholarship.
Contribute to one artist talk in the TWELVE months following
the completion of the scholarship, in negotiation with Carclew.
