Cindy Lee, M.S.Ed, is a specialist in the field of developmental disabilities with thirty years of
experience evaluating and treating young children with autism spectrum disorders and severe
emotional/behavioral disorders. She is currently the president and owner of Bright Sky Educational
Consulting, an agency in Western New York that provides professional development and consulting
services to schools and organizations in several areas including instructional programming,
curriculum development, and behavioral support of children and youth with autism and significant
emotional/behavioral challenges.

Research indicates that 40-50% of professionals leave the field of education in their first five years due to the challenging
behaviors exhibited by children and the perceived lack of administrative support in addressing these behaviors. Professionals
working with children from birth to adolescence are faced with rapidly changing mandates that dictate improved outcomes for all.
These expectations create a sense of unprecedented urgency and cause a high degree of anxiety for professionals and parents.
This anxiety can be exacerbated when coupled with the need to improve outcomes for individuals who present with persistently
challenging behavior that threatens long term success. We have a collective responsibility to support all learners in becoming
self-regulating and socially competent people. Our children and youth cannot be expected to benefit from the instructional and
therapeutic opportunities being offered until their maladaptive responses are meaningfully addressed.

Cindy Lee, M.S.Ed, is a specialist in the field of developmental disabilities with thirty years of experience evaluating and treating
young children with autism spectrum disorders and severe emotional/behavioral disorders. She is currently the president
and owner of Bright Sky Educational Consulting, an agency in Western New York that provides professional development and
consulting services to schools and organizations in several areas including instructional programming, curriculum development,
and behavioral support of children and youth with autism and significant emotional/behavioral challenges. Previously, Ms.
Lee served as the Early Childhood Principal for an agency in Western New York that provides comprehensive programming for
individuals with a wide range of disabilities from two years of age to adulthood. She has also served as the Program Director and
Principal for a residential school in Long Island, NY serving adolescents with High Functioning Autism, Asperger Syndrome and
related conditions. Ms. Lee has worked as a Coordinator of Special Education with responsibility for over 500 preschoolers with
disabilities and taught preschool and early elementary aged children with autism and behavioral disorders for over ten years. As
an Educational Consultant for a Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Clinic in Rochester, NY she conducted comprehensive evaluations
with children ages 3-8 suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder and has done consulting work with a private psychiatric
practice in Long Island, NY with a concentration on children with a dual diagnosis of autism and schizophrenia/psychosis. She
earned a BS in Speech Pathology from SUNY Geneseo, an MS in Developmental Disabilities from the University of Rochester, and
an MS in Educational Administration from Canisius College.

Guiding Practical Solutions to Challenging Behavioral
Issues in Young Children with Developmental Disabilities
Determining the underlying reasons for challenging behavior is a critical component in the support process. However, it is just
the beginning and many professionals and parents feel at a loss for how to obtain durable behavioral change once the functional
assessment process is completed. Participants in this interactive, solution-oriented workshop will acquire strategies to proactively
teach replacement behaviors that will help children and adolescents to demonstrate socially appropriate responses across
settings. Hands-on practice will include video analysis and the use of various data collection methods that are effective before,
during, and after strategy implementation. Culminating with the application of a 7 step strategic process, participants will leave this
session with practical solutions that can be implemented immediately.

Workshop Outline
1. Determine the lens through which maladaptive behavior is viewed.
2. Analyze behaviors to determine maintaining factors that contribute to the persistence of maladaptive responses in young
children and adolescents.
3. Prioritize behaviors that interfere most with social, emotional, behavioral and pre-academic/academic progress.
4. Select appropriate replacement behaviors as the first step in teaching more pro-social responses in various situations.
5. Formulate a plan of action to specifically teach replacement behaviors to young children and adolescents.
6. Assess behavioral change during baseline, implementation and stabilization phases of intervention by choosing appropriate
data collection method(s).
7. Apply a 7 step process to systematically change maladaptive behavioral patterns.
