Workshop Outline
Continuing Education Credit
I. Anatomy & Biomechanics Review
»» Shoulder anatomy
»» Axial skeleton review: Cervical and thoracic anatomy
»» Biomechanics of the shoulder and spine
Occupational Therapists - Summit Professional Education is an AOTA Approved Provider of
continuing education - provider #5873. This course is offered for 0.6 AOTA CEUs (6.0 contact
hours). The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content,
products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
Rotator cuff impingement is an extremely common diagnosis found in the clinical setting. Postural, articular,
neural and myofascial abnormalities are often to blame. Dysfunctions in these areas affect the base of support
created by the body to support the shoulder girdle and end up causing impingement of the rotator cuff.
Assessing the upper quadrant to find these limitations, treating them, then re-educating the body for dynamic
motor control serves to promote shoulder function and resolve impingement before a rotator cuff tear occurs.
Occasionally, a tear has occurred by the time a patient has come to your office. This workshop will also cover
how to rule out a suspected tear and how to proceed with post-op shoulder rehab.
II. Clinical Assessment of the Shoulder and Spine
»» Evaluation of posture and joint mobility
»» Evaluation of soft tissue length and strength
»» Review special tests for rotator cuff impingement
and suspected pathology
»» Evaluation of motor control
This lab oriented manual therapy workshop will guide you through assessment and treatment of the upper
quadrant as it relates to rotator cuff impingement. Participants will leave this workshop with hands-on
experience in joint mobility, soft tissue and movement assessment. Participants will also learn specific, proven
exercises and treatment strategies for functional dynamic motor control re-education to include in a home
exercise program that can immediately be incorporated into practice for better clinical outcomes.
III. Common Presentations of Rotator Cuff Impingement
and Pathology
»» Surgical vs non-surgical treatment
