Update #3 - 12th Annual Civil War Re-enactment, Eagle Scout Fundraiser & Regional Camp-out
Ladies and Gentlemen representing the Southern California area General Public, Civil War reenacting Community and Southern California area Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts:
Last call everybody! The digital signs are out on the 71 Freeway, weather is going to be perfect and
the weekend of April 10-12 is going to be another great Civil War Re-enactment and Regional
Scout Camp-out At Prado Park, Chino, California!
April 10th through 12th, 2015 marks our 12th Annual Civil War re-enactment, Eagle Scout
Scholarship Fundraiser and Regional Scout Camp-out held at the largest Regional Park in the State
of California. 2015 is the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War commemorating the year
1865 and with that, the SCCWA is proud to present “The Spring Campaigns of 1865 the Final
Chapter”! The SCCWA would also like to dedicate this year’s event to: “California in the Civil
War” with a tribute to the state of California and its contribution to “The War Between the States”.
This April at Opening Ceremonies held at 11:00 am on Saturday morning at the VIP tent on the
battlefield, The SCCWA will be honoring the following for their contribution to the hobby and the
Prado Park event:
Staff Lieutenant Colonel Russell Nakaishi, Adjutant, 1st Division, Army of the Potomac – Russell
has diligently worked behind the scenes since the inception of this event to insure that all battle
scenarios are painstaking and methodically planned out. With the input and help of General Keith
Harriott (Commanding 1st, Division, CS Army of Northern Virginia) and General John Maurias,
(Commanding 1st Division, US Army of the Potomac), Lieutenant Colonel Nakaishi has mapped,
out, thought out and carried out all the battles we have all enjoyed through the years. Russell has
taken on this very time consuming task each year by my request. I feel it’s time to give credit where
credit is due. Russell, on behalf of the Scouting program, General Public and Re-enacting
community who come to this event to watch the show battles, thank you for volunteering your time
in making the Prado event the success it has become!
If anybody is wondering, NO, there is no practicing the battle scenarios prior to each battle! The reenactors have one shot and one shot only to get it right! There is no such thing as a double take in
re-enacting! What you see on the battlefield is the culmination of professionalism, experience and
dedication of volunteer veteran living historians. These “historians” have given of their time, and
at their own expense, provided us with a very special glimpse of our nations past history! Thank
you for what you bring to the field!
Susan Ogle – Director of Drum Barracks, Civil War Museum in Wilmington CA will be given a
special award at opening ceremonies for her efforts with the last remaining original American Civil
War military facility in the Los Angeles area. Drum Barracks was in service to the US army from
1861-1873. Susan has been the Director of Drum Barracks since 2000 and a personal friend of mine
for many years prior to that. Susan has helped to maintain and create many new funding
opportunities for the Drum. Susan has seen the rise and fall of our state’s economy and suffered
through all the slim times and cut backs just like the rest of us but, lucky for us, she has survived
and Drum Barracks is a better place for it. Please help us welcome Susan Ogle to our 12th annual
event. By the way if you want to take a tour of the Drum Barracks facility you can find Susan at:
1052 N. Banning Blvd. Wilmington, CA 90744. Ph. # (310) 548-7509 or website at:
www.DrumBarracks.org
California 100/2nd Massachusetts Cavalry – This year, we are very lucky to honor our re-enacting
friends from the Fort Tejon Historical Association with the Cal 100/2nd Mass. Cavalry. Under the
direction and leadership of Captain James Reed, this re-enactment unit knows the true meaning of
the word. Talk about “Perseverance”! They are no strangers to cut backs and downsize, and have
fought through it all to make their presence known. And what an amazing footprint they have
made. One of the oldest re-enactment units around with years of experience, the Cal 100 portray
men from the West Coast volunteering to fight with an East Coast regiment. The point is that in reenacting, individual re-enactors can choose the identity or regiment they wish to portray. These
men and their unit choses to portray our home state of California. For that, our hat is off to you
guys. Please feel free to help us welcome them at opening ceremonies or visit them in their camp
situated in the 1st Division, Army of the Potomac field encampment.
A Short History of the Cal 100/2nd Mass Cavalry
By Larry Rogers
Many patriotic young men on the West coast had followed the war in the newspapers and were anxious
for a chance to join in the fight. But they knew that if they joined a California unit they would be
stationed in the West - fighting Indians, guarding wagon trains, or doing garrison duty. And so, in the late
summer of 1862, a group of Californians, all, but one, originally from the East Coast, contacted Governor
Andrew of Massachusetts and proposed to raise one hundred volunteers to form a separate company in a
cavalry regiment that was being raised in Massachusetts. The Governor readily agreed, with the condition
that the Californians would provide their own uniforms and equipment. Officially they became Company
"A" of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry, but they were more popularly known as the "California Hundred'.
The Californians used their enlistment bounty to pay for their passage and set off by sea from San
Francisco, December 11, 1862. Their journey took them via the Isthmus of Panama and thence up the
eastern seaboard to New York and on to Boston, arriving at Camp Meigs, Readville, Massachusetts (just
outside Boston) on January 4, 1863. After spending
several weeks of basic training at Camp Meigs, the Company was transported to Fortress Monroe,
Virginia, and placed on active duty at Gloucester Point on February 22, 1863.
This first contingent of Californians was so successful that it was soon followed by 400 more volunteers
under similar terms. They arrived at Camp Meigs during March and April of 1863, and soon after
receiving their basic training were assigned to the defenses of Washington, D.C. They became Companies
E, F, L and M of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry.
On July 27, 1863, Company A, the California Hundred, left Gloucester Point and on August 19, 1863,
joined up with its fellow Californians at Centreville. There, they maintained a role in the defenses of the
Capitol as well as countering the guerrilla raids of Mosby. They participated in the defenses of the Capitol
during the siege by Jubal early in July of 1864. In
August they were assigned to Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah, and participated in the sweep of the
Confederates from the Shenandoah Valley during the fall and winter of 1864. They fought with
distinction in the battles of Winchester, Luray, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek. They were part of the long
march from the Shenandoah to Petersburg in February and March of 1865 and later participated in the
battles of Dinwiddie Court House, Five Forks and Sailors Creek. At wars end they were present at the
surrender of Lee at Appomattox Court House. They took part in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C.
on May 23, 1865.
They were mustered out of the U.S. service at Fairfax Court House, VA., July 20, 1865, and on August 3,
1865, having returned to Camp Meigs, the men were paid off and the regiment disbanded.

REGIONAL SCOUT CAMP-OUT APRIL 10th-12th, 2015
In 2014 we launched a new concept of an expanded family camp-out where non-uniformed parents
of Scouts and siblings of Scouts could sign up and participate in the annual Regional Scout Campout and all the activities associated with this event. This turned out to be huge! In order to keep the
ball rolling and keep families together in the spirit of Scouting, the SCCWA will once again honor
all parents, brothers and sisters of uniformed Scouts into the Regional Scout Camp-out. A reminder
to Scout parents: The standard registration fee for the Regional Scout Camp-out is $30 per person
and will be accepted through March 15th, 2015. Make sure you pull off the “Registration Form”
from the SCCWA.com website, fill it out and mail it in with your check no later than March 15th,
2015.

existing camping area, within the largest Regional Park in the state of California, located within the
City of Chino and within the County of San Bernardino Parks Department, the City of Chino
require the the following from you as re-enactors: Considering our state’s current drought
situation and because the park is located adjacent to a wilderness preserve, you as re-enactors will
be required to establish a night watch from dusk until dawn (Friday and Saturday night) that will
encompass the perimeter of your own field encampment areas. The purpose of this requirement is
to insure the health and safety of all re-enactors and their personal possessions during their stay at
the park regarding any and all fire, health and safety requirements. I have instructed your Army
commanders General Harriott and General Maurais to establish the appropriate night guard
necessary to accommodate this fundamental request. (Anyone not interested in helping to create
and maintain a safe environment for the re-enacting community while attending this event, please
let me know prior to your arrival). Thank you, Gary Fradella (909) 590-5797 –

EQUESTRIANS –FREE HAY
Ladies and Gentlemen, in order to accommodate you and your mount with some free hay for the
weekend, I will need to know who will be bringing their horse to the event. I am getting ready to
make arrangements for a delivery and want to make sure I have enough hay to accommodate
everyone. Please let me know at your earliest convenience. If you would like a hay ration set aside
for your mount (s) please call (909) 590-5797 and leave a message. With the rising cost of hay and
delivery, unfortunately, if I don’t hear from you prior to March 15th, 2015 with a request for hay,
you won’t be issued any at the event!
SUTLERS AND FOOD VENDORS – All the best Sutlers and local food vendors will be assembled
and available for your shopping and dining pleasure. I have asked the Troop 201 Boy Scout Food
and Drink Booth to be up and running Friday afternoon/evening so there will be no need for
anyone to leave the park to find something to eat starting Friday afternoon. There will be
everything from BBQ beef, pork, chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, Mexican food, kettle corn, stuffed
potatoes and yams to funnel cakes and gourmet corn on the cob. The menu covers breakfast lunch
and dinner both days so plan on eating at Sutler row if you wish to take a break from period
cooking yourselves.
FREE RE-ENACTOR RAFFLES AND AWARDS – Traditionally, there has been two raffles held
each year at this event. The first raffle is provided in conjunction with the Women’s Tea and Social
which takes place on Sunday, April 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the Dance Hall Building. The second raffle
is provided to our combatant re-enactors and takes place directly following the last battle at
approximately 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon on the battlefield. Apparently business has picked up
for our east coast Sutlers as they have provided an assortment of goodies to give away this year. The
free re-enactor raffles will consist of over 40 items ranging from gift certificates, Civil War
magazine subscriptions to period military equipment and is presented equally to the
Ladies/Civilians, Union and Confederate armies. (You must be present with raffle ticket to win at
either raffle). Also presented at closing ceremonies after the last battle, will be the winner of the
$1.00 Musket Raffle, Most Authentic US, CS and Civilian Camp Impression’s. So make sure to
keep your camp areas as authentic as possible in order to have the chance of taking home these
coveted awards and don’t leave until you know who wins.
MOST AUTHENTIC CAMP AWARD - The Prado Regional Park event has sponsored and
supported a “Most Authentic Camp Award” for the past 11 years and will continue the tradition
this year by awarding plaques to the best US, CS and Civilian camp impressions. Camps are judged
by plain clothed individuals representing members of local City Government, Fire Department and
Police Department agencies. These representatives will be looking for what would be considered, an
outstanding living history impression of the early 1860’s. Everyone is invited to participate in this
portion of the event and we look forward to enjoying all the hard work you put into creating the
unique atmosphere of the mid 1800’s. Awards presented on the battlefield directly following the last
engagement.
OFFICIAL SCCWA 2015 COMMEMORATIVE PATCH - All re-enactors in formation in both
Union and Confederate camps on Sunday morning just before the first engagement will receive the
12th Annual SCCWA Prado Regional Park Commemorative Event Patch. For anyone else who
wishes to purchase an 11th Annual Commemorative Patch, they may be purchased at the Scout
Camp-out registration booth from noon until 6:00 pm Friday, April 10th or call (909) 590-5797.
MUSKET RAFFLE - Don’t forget to ask about the $1.00 Musket Raffle, 1st Division Union and 1st
Division Confederate T-Shirts and SCCWA Stickers for sale at the registration booth upon entering
the event area. (A re-enactor has taken home the $800.00 musket 10 times in the past 11 years).
That’s quite an accomplishment considering this raffle is open to the general public. Let’s see if the
re-enactors can make it 11 for 12! This year’s musket will be an 1858 Enfield three band musket
and you know how much those go for these days!
For a list of all the other venues throughout the weekend, please see the attached schedule of events
including the re-enactor dance and Scout activities or refer to the program found on our website at
SCCWA.com. Don’t forget to turn the volume up on your computer when viewing the re-enactor
slide show, it’s a great one!

2002 for the purposes of creating a fundraising event for the Boy Scouts and was also created with
the hope that by re-living certain historical events during our nation’s Civil War may instill a sense
of awareness for what we share as American’s and the freedoms we cherish. The spirit and
traditions of Scouting go hand in hand with our rich military heritage and because of this union; we
have enjoyed the past 11 years of this event and look forward to April 10th and 12th 2015.

SCOUT BATTLE, 3:00 p.m. SATURDAY AND 2:00 p.m. SUNDAY – Considering we have another
very large number of Scouts signed up for the Scout Battle scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m., I
have a feeling its going to be quite the spectacle once again. Last year was our 6th effort and was
another astounding success. If you want to see where the next generation of re-enactors will be
coming from, just listen for the sounds of hundreds of scouts battling it out in the middle of the
battlefield around 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon and 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Very heartfelt
thanks go out to (Re-enactors) Tom Atkins, Bobby Taylor and Steve Pavich for all your help with
the Scouts wishing to portray the Blue and Gray for this venue. The Scout battle is proudly
sponsored by the SCCWA.
FOOD - There are food vendors available just inside the event area offering a delicious and varied
menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner both Saturday and Sunday. You will find anything from BBQ
Tri-Tip, Chicken and Ribs, Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Mexican food to Breakfast Burritos, Roasted
Corn Stuffed Potatoes, Yams, Funnel Cakes, Kettle Corn, Ice Cream, Shaved Ice and everything in
between so plan to eat at the event.
WHAT TO BRING – Prado Regional Park is the largest regional park in the state of California at
2,200 acres and possibly one of the most beautiful. Please bring some comfortable shoes as the event
and battlefield is at least ¼ mile from the parking lot and it’s a bit of a walk. There is handicapped
parking and access for all those with appropriate plaques. It does get cold at night so bring a light
jacket! Also, it might be advantageous to bring a folding chair, umbrella and/or E-Z up as the
battles generally last for approximately 1 hour and there is no seating or natural shade along the
800 yards of split rail fence that lines the battlefield. (See attached program for Schedule of Events)
RV FULL HOOK-UP CAMPING - Prado Park contains a 75 unit Full Hook-up camping facility
and there are still spaces available. For more information about a camping space for the weekend,
please call the park for a reservation at: (909) 597-4260
DRY CAMPING - The Park will also offer a limited number of Dry Camping spaces for this event.
(Dry Camping refers to parking on the grass with no hook-ups) If you would like more information
or to make reservation for Dry Camping please call the park at: (909) 597-4260

NON–PROFIT CORPORATION – Just what is a non-profit educational corporation and who
benefits from its efforts and donations? A tax exempt corporation or (501c3) must first be worthy of
the designation by its performance and merit as a non profit educational corporation. Tax exempt
status is achieved through the programs provided to the general public. Applications must be filed
with both state and federal tax boards and once qualified; the organization applying must pay a
sizable fee to obtain a (501c3) tax identification number. This tax I.D. number if awarded may then
be applied to discounts provided by local government agencies if available in order to create nonprofit events. A non-profit or tax exempt organization may only provide donations or funds to
another non-profit organization such as the Boy Scouts. All legal non-profit or tax exempt
organizations must be incorporated and make their tax I.D. number available to the general
public/re-enactors or have it clearly posted. If you are wondering where you’re hard earned efforts
as re-enactors go and just who benefits from an event like the Prado Regional Park event, just look
for the sponsoring entities (SCCWA) tax I.D. number on the event flyer or paperwork. Frankly, if
there is no tax I.D. number present, the event organizing entity is raising funds for profit and not
bound to any state or federal law concerning non-profit status. (In other words, the money
generated from this type of event is not going to a charity but rather to a private individual or
entity). Just thought you might be interested in knowing the motivation behind putting on a reenactment event. If you are concerned where the money generated from your attendance ends up at
any event you attend throughout the year, simply ask to see the tax I.D. number, (It must be
provided). Please Google the SCCWA and its non-profit status at nonpofittax.com. Its much harder
then you might think to establish tax exempt status in order to generate funding for another nonprofit organization.
For your information, the (SCCWA) Southern California Civil War Association INC. is a 501c3
non-profit educational corporation ID# 26-0575085. All proceeds generated from the Prado
Regional Park Civil War Re-enactment event are donated to the Troop 201 Eagle Scout
Scholarship Foundation,
APRIL 2nd & 3rd, 2016 – These are the dates for our 13th annual re-enactment and fundraiser. Mark
