Healthy communities depend on volunteers – people who will
share their skills with an organization because they care about
their community. Volunteering your time and talents is a
powerful way to help influence the service of the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, and a
great way to gain valuable career and leadership experience.
You are invited to participate in the teen volunteering program at the library, to help
promote the joy of reading and lifelong learning. The Coeur d’Alene Public Library
promotes an unconstrained flow of knowledge and ideas by providing materials,
services, and programs to foster a thinking, moving, and diverse population. Volunteers
can help make a big difference in this process by providing the diversity of their
experience and by bringing their own creative thoughts to the greater community.
Teens ages 13 to 18 are eligible to volunteer at the library, with parent/guardian
permission. Exceptions may be allowed under special circumstances for younger teens
exiting sixth grade that display a strong sense of responsibility and dedication.
All volunteers are required to
attend a training session at the
beginning of their volunteer commitment period to learn their jobs and responsibilities
and become familiar with working in a library environment. Typical tasks may include:
helping to prepare crafts and materials for children’s or teen programs, assisting with
setting up and cleaning up the program rooms on program days, facilitating crafts and
other programs for children or teens, photocopying, cutting paper, creating content for
the teen blog, cleaning books, straightening shelves, wrapping new books, or shelving.
Teens that volunteer also become part of a great community of volunteers, and will be
able to participate in volunteer socials and other events to thank them for their service
to the library.
Teen Volunteers are responsible
for setting (and keeping) their own
schedules. We understand that
every teen has a different
schedule, and that many teens are very busy during the school year. Because of this,
we like to make things simple: teen volunteers are emailed a list of possible
opportunities at the beginning of every month and given the chance to sign up for the
projects they want to help with. Shelving hours can also be scheduled by emailing the
YA Coordinator.
Teen volunteers must attend a mandatory Volunteer Orientation, which will take place
on Saturday, June 13, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. If you are unable to attend this training,
arrangements must be made with the YA Coordinator for an alternate time.

in before Monday, June 1st, 2015, and may be submitted at the Adult Checkout desk of
the Coeur d’Alene Library or directly to the YA Coordinator.
