Perspectives on Global Energy Challenges
From a global point of view, economic
growth and environmental sustainability
poses new challenges which need
innovative ideas to meet the demands
of future generations. Although the
growth of OECD countries has been
tied to the intensive energy use as the
industrialization and personal mobility
took off, non-OECD countries need
access to novel efficient technology
development and deployment to
grow at same scale but with less
environmental impact. Natural gas and
biomass (including algae) will change
the source mix of the future for energy
and chemical industry. Biotechnology
may become a new growth platform.
Innovative distributed models will
need to be considered with the
choices of tomorrow. Research is
needed to increase the efficiency of
existing chemical processes and energy
systems, and also to develop these new
platforms.
In these challenging times we must
be open to many solutions and focus
on asking the right questions. We
need to collaborate across sectors
and disciplines, and across industry
and academia to develop technologies
over the long term. Innovation is needed
on both technical and business side.
Traditional way of business may not fit the
new technological solutions. Expanding the
knowledge base and including diverse inputs
will certainly lead to pragmatic solutions.
This presentation will cover the current
work and future challenges associated with
these developments.
