Recognition comes from doing the little things for others and being values driven!
In April, we received one of the greatest tributes
a business can achieve. The Tampa Bay Times
recognized Cheval Golf and Athletic Club as
being one of the Best Places To Work in
the Tampa Bay area! Cheval Golf and Athletic
club ranked #38 in the small business
category! This distinguished accomplishment
grew out of an independent survey led by
the Tampa Bay Times. WorkplaceDynamics,
LLP, a leading research firm on organizational
health and employee engagement conducted
the employee survey. The top workplaces
were determined based solely on employee
feedback.
WorkplaceDynamics

the United States.
I have had the pleasure in my
past business life to be part of
two companies that were on
the Fortune 500 Top 100 best
places to work. What I learned
from those experiences was that
if you were part of a company that received
that recognition, we knew we were part
of something special. We knew that our
company understood that employees were
valued and that the company would do it’s
best to give back to us as much as we put
into our work.
What I also learned was everyone was
accountable as a team to bring the values
to life with every customer interaction. Our
voices were heard and we took pride and
ownership in achieving the company’s goals.
If you walk around the club you will see a few
of our value signs posted. It is what we are
driven by every day at Cheval GAC. I believe
it is these values and our commitment to them
that sets us apart from others and makes our
employees the best in the area.

welcomed a record 230 guests to brunch
in celebration of Easter Sunday. Our
youngest attendees participated in an egg
hunt and a good time was had by all! Thank
you for your continued support of our club

COURSE MAINTENANCE
By Gregg Richardson, Golf Maintenance Director
Spring has sprung! This is the beginning
of a busy season for your course
maintenance team. Weed killing will
begin this month starting with bunker
and green slopes. As winter overseeding progresses, tees and fairways
will follow. The course will be fertilized to
stimulate Bermuda grass growth for an
even transition as winter ryegrass begins
to dye off due to warmer temperatures.
Tees and fairways will be aerified to
increase oxygen to roots and relieve
compaction. Finally the greens will
need to be verticut and sanded more
INSIDE
frequently. We are prepared and excited
to provide this course with a beautiful
transition to spring and summer.

Ye Olde Pub Quiz Night –
Golf Club
How many of you have lost your serve in
doubles and wondered what you were
doing wrong? The problem may not be the
serve but rather how you and your partner
play as a team. When playing doubles
the net player can put a lot of pressure
on the returner in several different ways.
The first way to apply pressure is through
poaching. In poaching, a team can win
easy points by surprising and attacking
the opponent, causing the returner to
think twice. If the returner is wondering
what the net player is doing then the
returner has lost their concentration.
Returning is difficult enough without
worrying about the net player across
from you. The more the returner thinks
about the poacher, the more effective a
person’s serve becomes.
More ways to create pressure on the
returner is through other movements
such as fake poaching, moving towards
the net or moving towards the alley.
The goal of the net person is to distract
the returner by moving and causing the
returner to lose focus. An effective net
player is one that does get passed down
the line occasionally but not frequently. If
you do not poach enough then you miss
the opportunities to win easy points for
your serving partner.

FLAGS (Florida Age Group
Championships)
Cheval GAC was fortunate to have
10 Team Velocity swimmers qualify for
FLAGS! We travelled to Sarasota, and
walked away with the best times in all 6
relays we swam! Lexie Mulvihill was one
of only 2 eleven year old swimmers to
qualify for the finals. She finished in 7th
place with a time of 25.98 for the event.
The team was able to find time to eat a
few meals together and even enjoyed
some go kart racing! We look forward to
growing in numbers at our next FLAGS!
Area 3/5 (Regional Championships)
Team Velocity was well represented with
73 swimmers in attendance. Two of our
new swimmers (Taylor Holmes & Jack
Stanislow) were able to attain FLAGS cuts
this weekend. We had multiple swimmers
place in the top 8, which enabled them to
return and swim in finals that night - Emmy
Paglicci, Dani Martino, Max Martino, Taylor
Holmes, Zachary K., Bradley Stoker, Kyle
Stoker, Morgan Harkness, Tyler Casey,
Kaylee Folta, Lilly Kossoff, Lexie Mulvihill,
Elizabeth Solano, Jack Stanislow, Garrett
Sykes. Top 3 medal winners were Garret
Sykes, Bradley Stoker, Jack Stanislow,
Elizabeth Solano, Lexie Mulvihill, Zachary
K., Taylor Holmes, Kaylee Folta and Tyler
Casey.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
By Jill Martino, Fitness Coordinator
May Fitness Challenge
Since National DRINK WATER WEEK is
May 3-9. May’s fitness challenge is to drink
half your body weight in ounces of water
daily, so if you weigh 140lbs, you should
be drinking 70oz of water. Also, for ONE
WEEK, can you replace EVERYTHING you
drink with water only? The easiest way to
do this is to drink a glass first thing in the
morning and then have a glass BEFORE
each meal. Don’t forget to take a water
bottle with you wherever you go to hydrate
throughout the day.
Benefits of Drinking Water
•No calories, nor artificial garbage in it! By
far it’s the healthier option!
•Helps your body metabolize fat more
efficiently
•Prevents dehydration, which in turn
allows you to go longer and harder during workouts
•Alleviates water retention and prevents bloating
•Improves your complexion
•Helps you feel more energetic
•Decreases the probability you will mistake hunger for thirst
Triathlon Season is in Full Force!
Not only are we training a group of beginners
to do their very first race in Dunedin on June
7, we have many others that are tackling new
goals, longer distances and improving their
race times. If you would like to participate in
any of our training, maybe even participate
in a relay for a race, contact Jill Martino at
[email protected]. There’s a race
every weekend and there is a distance
for everyone. Triple Crown Racing is more
about the camaraderie than we are about
the times. If you are a swimmer, biker OR
runner, come hang out with us. Here are
some great upcoming local events
May 31 – Madeira Beach Triathlon
June 7 – Dunedin Triathlon
June 20/21 – Heartland Triathlon in

July 25 – Top Gun at Fort Desoto
Aug 15 – Courage to Tri at Sand Key

DAYEMI GARCIA
What was your exercise, nutrition and
fitness like before you connected with
the Cheval GAC? Even though I did
want to exercise, it was only “if I had
spare time” and not a priority. My eating
habits were terrible. I rarely ate a salad,
but did eat plenty of processed foods,
especially carbs. I also ate out often,
sometimes fast food. When I wanted to
lose weight, my method was starvation.
What made you decide to make a
change? A year ago both my husband
Freddy and I attended the Burn-n-Learn
classes at Cheval AC, hoping to lose
some weight and establish healthy
habits for our sons early in their lives.
Jill has been an amazing motivator.
There’s a piece of advice she gave us
that was a turning point for me regarding
exercising: Always set a goal that’s
exciting and a little scary at the same
time. She said, “We can do so much
more than we think we can”. This
inspired me to set a goal. I never, ever
even considered an option, so I signed
up for a marathon.
How has your lifestyle changed since
starting a new program?
I relieve stress by running regularly, and I
have found the long runs relaxing which
makes me more patient and active with
my children. Exercising is part of the
schedule now. I make time for it. It’s
as important as going to work or
taking care of my children.
What has kept you motivated?
My Family! Being a positive example for
my children has been the most influential
factor in keeping me motivated. By
making positive changes in my family’s
routine, an active lifestyle will become
natural, hopefully avoiding excess
weight and diminishing health problems
as they become adults.
