Internet Safety Tips for Parents Healthy Hot Lunches We continue to offer our students healthy lunches every Tuesday. Order forms go home at the beginning of each month. Should you miss the cut-off date for the first Tuesday of the month, you may still order for any of the following Tuesdays, as long as you return the form by the preceding Friday. Create a list of Internet house rules with your children. You should include the kinds/types of sites that are off limits. Keep internet-connected computers in an open area and out of your child’s bedroom. Create a relationship with your child that is conducive to open communication, talk to them about their online friends and activities just as you would about their other activities. Know which chat rooms or message boards your child visits, whom they talk to and make sure they’re not talking to strangers. Teach your child never to give out personal information without your permission. Encourage your child to come to you if they find messages that make them feel uncomfortable or threatened. Talk to your child about good and bad sites. Be aware of the Web sites that your child frequents and made sure the sites don’t contain personal photos and information or offensive content. Random Acts of Kindness Week This year, St. Carthagh Catholic school took part in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser in order to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In the weeks leading up to our event day, students worked tirelessly to collect funds to aid in the research of heart disease and stroke. On February 11th, our gym was transformed into a skipping zone by our grade 7/8’s. Students of all ages travelled down to get active and have fun at the different stations. In the end, our school goal of $1000 was surpassed, and we were able to come together and raise an amazing $1496.18! It is truly special to see a small community come together to make such a big difference. St. Carthagh Catholic School will be participating in Random Acts of Kindness Week from March 9 to 13. The purpose of this week is to promote positive energy to counteract the negative effects of senseless violence in our society and to honour the memory of all victims of violence. Activities will be held in promoting this cause. Our brains are more intricate than the most complex engine; more able to solve problems than the most sophisticated computer. Just like those special machines, our children’s brains need and deserve the very best attention to keep healthy and in good working order. On Friday, February 20th we had the opportunity to attend Batawa Ski Hill for the day. I would like to thank all the parents, staff and students who helped make this opportunity possible. It was amazing to see all the first time skiers out there, trying something brand new. Each student did a wonderful job, and I am so proud of how all of you took the time to show encouragement, support and kindness to one another. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who came out for the day. Your help is always appreciated. Thank You, Ms. Weese Tweed & Area Arts Council Student Theatre – Spring 2015 Teach your children activities that exercise their brains - like games, puzzles and playing musical instruments. Provide a healthy diet; make sure your children get the rest they need. Always: Buckle up for safety to greatly reduce the chance of suffering a serious head injury in the car. Make sure your children wear a helmet while bicycling, skating, and so on. March 16 – March 22, 2015 is Brain Awareness Week If you are 7 to 14 years old and like to have a good time while learning new skills, then this is for you! Join us and delve into the magic and excitement of theatre. You’ll have fun and gain experience in acting, dance and singing. What a great way to gain selfconfidence, meet new people and show an audience what you can do! Classes are held at the Marble Arts Centre on Bridgewater Road and run Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in April. Enrolment is limited so get your application in soon! Only $50 for the session. St. Carthagh Catholic School Lenten Project – We Give Alms Canadian Tire Money St. Carthagh students in Miss Black’s grade 6/7 class are collecting Canadian Tire Money to raise funds this Lenten Season to provide fresh food for families in need. Students are raising funds to construct a chicken coop for the St. Clotilde Hospital in Peru. Fr. Maurice Schroeder, who was a visiting priest in the St. Carthagh Parish and in our classrooms from September to November, spoke with our students about the growing need for fresh food in impoverished communities such as his home Parish of St. Clotilde. Please help us in our mission to get fresh food to the people of St. Clotilde in Peru. Please send Canadian Tire Money in with your child throughout the Lenten Season and help us reach our goal of $1,500. by Easter Sunday! Thank you. This year, for Lent, St. Carthagh Catholic School is taking on the challenge of raising money for the mission hospital of St. Clotilde, Peru, and the Grade 7/8 class has decided to do a bottle drive to raise funds. So, on Saturday, March 28th, on your way to wherever you’re off to – please drop off your empty beer, wine or liquor bottles and beer cans at the School. All monies raised will go toward building, stocking and sustaining a chicken coop to feed patients at St. Clotilde. If you can’t make it on the 28th, you may drop off your bottles at the school any week day, between 8 am and 4:30 pm. Reid’s Dairy Milkshakes Mrs. Richardson’s and Miss Weese’s Grade 4/5 class will be selling Reid’s Dairy Milkshakes for $2 each on Fridays, beginning March 13th. Watch for order forms coming home. Again, all proceeds will go towards the St. Clotilde Hospital chicken coop! Movie Night Mrs. DeMille and Mrs. Mongomery and their students would like to invite you to join us for Miss Black’s Class will also be selling Kernels Popcorn for $2 per bag on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 3rd. Flavours available will be white cheddar, salt and vinegar, buttersalt, salt and vinegar, dill pickle and caramel. All proceeds will go towards the St. Clotilde Hospital chicken coop! the movie Big Hero 6 at St. Carthagh School on Friday March 6th. The doors will open at 5:45 pm and the movie will start at 6:15 pm sharp. Admission is FREE and donations for “Carthagh’s Coop” are greatly appreciated. All proceeds from food and drink sales will go towards our mission to fund the construction of “Carthagh’s Coop” at St. Clotilde hospital in Peru. There will be Pizza available for pre-order, popcorn and drinks. Bring your blankets, chairs, favourite stuffed animals and come get cozy for a winter’s night in!
