In Memory:
Carl Sundell 1958 — 2015
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see —- Edgar Degas
The light behind Hunter High’s many stained glass windows disappeared with the passing of
Mr. Sundell, His expertise, his creative endeavors and his unique ability to inspire his students and colleagues will remain. Our highly respected and much valued Art teacher will be miss. Thank you for
twenty-five years. —- Blueprint staff
“Outstanding Educator”
I will always remember how Mr. Sundell used
wit, sarcasm and humor in his classes. He did
this in a way that would never demean or embarrass students. —- Jim Miller, Graphics
Carl taught me that being an artisan is as valuable as being an artist. —- Debbe Jones, ESL
Carl was like a father to many of us as he offered guidance with our professional
agreement and our teaching contracts. He was very intelligent and wise as he offered advice and negotiated contracts for all teachers.
Carl created so many amazing things around the school. All of the stain glass windows that you see in the entrances of our school and teachers doors were created by
Carl. In our gym he designed and completed the region team logos for all six
teams. He was an excellent artist who dedicated his life to helping others love
learn his passion —- Craig Stauffer, Principal
“Dedicated and Committed, Talented”
As I reflect back on 25 years at Hunter High with Carl Sundell, I will remember
his enthusiasm and love for teaching and education. He was always going to battle for the rights and benefits of teachers. He was extremely talented and was so
willing to share his talents, never expecting praise or seeking recognition for the
things he did. The beautiful stained glass windows in the front office were a gift to
the school from Carl Sundell. He was a kind and gentle giant.
Claudia Edvalsen, Secretary
Mr. Sundell was a man of his word. If he said that he was going to
do something, he would do it. Pots to be fired in the kiln were done
when he said he would do them. He was always positive and willing
to help me with throwing my pots. He would always tell me not to
give up, stay with it and eventually it will come. He may be gone,
but he will always be with me. —- Devan Batie, senior
“Genuine and Sincere”
I remember taking film studies from Mr. Sundell. It was so fun. We
would have popcorn when we watched a movie. I also had him for
ceramics and he helped me a lot. He always knew the answer to
every question and he knew my name the very first time he met me.
He just always remembered. I am so glad I had the chance to experience a great teacher. —-Melanie Ramirez, senior
Carl was one of the most kind, humorous, and intelligent people
I have ever known. I'll never forget his sense of humor and the way
he used it to help motivate students. Carl always seemed two steps
ahead of everyone around him, and that’s what made him such a
good teacher and mentor. He had a great vision for how he felt his
students could learn and grow and did everything he could to help
them reach their potential.— Rock Frampton, Art
“Art is the fun , elective class where you get to do something
and not just listen to me talk.”
