Don’t miss out on this spectacular School Event! Congratulations to our grade 7 students who received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit on Saturday, March 28th during the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Miehm was very impressed with our Confirmandi and commented on how well prepared they were to receive this sacrament. On Sunday, April 26th, our grade 2 students will receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Please continue to pray for our Confirmandi and our grade 2 students as they finalize their preparation for their First Holy Communion. Wednesday, April 15th is our second annual Pasta Night. If you have not already done so, please purchase your tickets online for this community event and join us for a wonderful evening presented by our School Council. Finally, during the week of May 3rd-8th, Ontario’s Catholic School Boards will be celebrating Catholic Education Week. Catholic Education Week celebrates the distinctive contribution that Catholic schools make to students, the community and society. This year’s theme is “Exploring Paths of Joy”. Room 1 Room 8 Room 7 Room 1 Room 12 COMIC BOOK CLUB ST. LUKE ECO NEWS The Comic Book Club is developing some exciting comics this month. Several of the students are working together to develop their own Pokémon comic entitled, “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.” The comic is about a group of five Pokémon best friends that go on a mythical journey through a dungeon to find treasure. Below is a picture of the front page of the comic created by Robert D., Logan G., and Jacob S., from Mrs. Chong’s class. In preparation for Earth Hour, that took place on Saturday March 28th, the St. Luke school community celebrated their own Earth Hour on Friday, March 27th between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. St. Luke joins in with over 120 countries to make our voices heard, by turning off the lights and to protest climate change. We hope that you were able to participate in your own Earth Hour with your families at home. The students continue to create public service announcements to draw awareness to water, energy and oil sustainability. As the weather continues to warm up we hope that more children will be walking to school on Wednesdays to promote a clean community. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GRADE 8 GRADUATION COMMITTEE Parents , guardians , family members (of all grades) and High School Students requiring volunteer hours are invited to be part of the Graduation Committee. Assistance is needed in the following areas: GRADE 3 & 6 EQAO Similar to previous years, our Grade 3 and 6 students will participate in the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Primary and Junior Division assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics between May 25 and June 5th. These EQAO assessments will continue to be administered to all students in Grades 3 and 6. Students will be required to complete three test booklets: one mathematics booklet, one reading booklet and one writing booklet. The types of questions in the booklets will be familiar to your child as they are based on the work your child has been doing throughout the year. The total amount of time that the students will spend on the testing will be six hours and is generally spread over the course of two or three days. ▪ Planning and organizing ▪ Decorating the gymnasium ▪ Take-down of decorations in the gymnasium (the day after graduation) ▪ Graduation reception – The reception is normally hosted by parents of the students in Grade 7, with assistance of Grade 7 students. One or two parents are required to organize and coordinate this event. Time commitment: a few hours prior to Graduation Day and 3-4 hours the afternoon / evening of Graduation. If you are interested in volunteering and have a Criminal Reference Check on file at the office (not required for high school students), please contact Mrs. Boiago and come to our Grad Decorating Committee Meeting on Wednesday, April 23rd at 6:00 p.m. PUBLIC SPEAKING Congratulations is extended to Jacob P. for doing an outstanding job representing St. Luke School at the Board Public Speaking Competition. Jacob delivered an informative speech on the topic of Poverty. Jacob we are extremely proud of you. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK APRIL 6th – APRIL 13th Research shows that school volunteers can make a school better for all the students. Volunteers contribute to the vitality and spirit of our school community through the selfless giving of their time, talents, and experience. On Wednesday, April 22nd, the staff of St. Luke would like to recognize our team of dedicated volunteers at a Volunteer Tea in the library from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Invitations will be sent home on April 8th. Please RSVP to the office no later than Friday, April 17th. STUDENT PLACEMENT REQUESTS FOR 2015 - 2016 The creation of class lists will not take place until late May/early June. Class requests will only be received for students with Special Needs and/or special circumstances that are addressed with the principal prior to a request being made in writing. This should take place by May 8th. For those who will be able to make a request, please note that specifying individual teachers will not be accepted. We do have a process in place to create the classes and staff considers a number of factors when devising class lists. IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT RETURNING TO ST. LUKE IN SEPTEMBER… We ask any family who knows that their child(ren) will not be returning to St. Luke for the 2015-2016 school year to please notify the office in writing as soon as possible. We are in the process of projecting student enrolment for September 2015 and this information will greatly assist us. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK IS COMING! MAY 4 – MAY 8 Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2015 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age. We invite you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and work schedule may permit. There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week: Monday – Walking Together and Sharing Our Stories Tuesday – Opening the Scriptures Wednesday – Welcoming Others to the Table Thursday – Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread Friday – Proclaiming the Good News Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own developed activities we have prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is ‘Exploring Paths of Joy’.
