PAC Raffle Extended by One Week!!! It seems that after the hustle and bustle of Spring Break we may need a little bit of extra time to get our raffle tickets in. We are extending our dates. Raffle tickets and money will be due back at the school no later than Wednesday, April 8th and the raffle will be drawn at the morning Assembly on Friday, April 10th. There are also extra tickets available at the office if you would like to take advantage of the extra time and sell some more! This raffle is a major fundraiser for the school and has helped us to build our playgrounds, basketball courts, computer labs, and more for the students! Thank-you for helping to make Golden Ears the best school around! Mr. Wheatley Dear Parents, For the past two weeks there has been wonderful buzz of excitement around the school as the students watched local artist Jason Craft complete our school’s new lobby mural. While at the school Jason spent a lot of time talking with students and staff about the mural, his love of art, and how to become an artist. Jason has created a wonderful one of a kind mural based on input from students, staff and the PAC. Hidden within this mural are a number of words and images based on what the students said made Golden Ears such a great school. Next time you are “Save the date” – Dig it Musical All intermediate classes are working hard to prepare for their spring musical, “Dig It”. Costumes are due on Friday, April 10th. Please ensure all pieces are in bags labeled with your child’s name so we can check and make sure they are complete. Please remember to check the Dig It Costume website for ideas: http://digitthemusical.blogspot.ca/. Students are reminded to practice the music at home: http://schools.sd42.ca/ge/welcome-to-goldenears-elementary-school/golden-ears-elementarymusicals-2/. Students who have lines in the show need to be practicing at home. All lines must be memorized. Parents who wish to have their children in grades 1 to 7 transfer to another school for September must do the following. Obtain a STUDENT TRANSFER REQUEST FORM from their current school, complete the transfer form including signature and have the current principal sign and date it. Current school retains the Student Transfer Request Form. The deadline for the first Phase of the transfer is April 15, 2015. Book Fair Ms. Chudy would like to thank all the parents, grandparents, and children who took the time to come to the book fair. You made the book fair a successful fundraiser, with $2000 in sales. A portion of funds raised from the fair will go towards buying materials for the library. Several generous families also contributed to purchasing books from the Classroom Wish List Program. Ms. Chudy would also like to thank Mrs. Smith with the setup, as well as Mrs. Hansen and the Golden Ears’ EAs for assisting during the Fair. Without their help the book fair would not have run so smoothly. Jump Rope for Heart Golden Ears would like to thank everyone for the amazing support given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year during our “Jump Rope for Heart” event. The students’ energy and enthusiasm was terrific on event day! We raised $ 2747.65. WOW! The top class was Ms. Gold/Mrs. Mastin $756.15 and they have been entered into a draw for a day at Cliffhanger. The top three fundraisers for our school were Emma Strachan $585, Talia Celentano $250, Chloe Celentano $250. Amazing job ! Public Speaking Our intermediate students are working hard preparing for our public speaking forum. Students present to their class first and the top two students from each class are selected to present in the activity room to the intermediate student body and judges. From there, a finalist in each grade will be selected to represent Golden Ears in the District Public Speaking Forum taking place May 13th and 14th. We will be hosting School Public Speaking Forum on Friday, April 17th. REMINDERS ... Moving? Please advise office staff if your child(ren) will be attending a different school in September. The recent fire at Sunrise Apartments has had a great impact on many residents in our community, including families within our school communities. Many members of our school community have been reaching out to find out how they can best support the families affected by the fire. City of Maple Ridge Emergency Social Services has advised us that the greatest need is financial. If you would like to make a financial donation, a bank account has been set up with Westminster Savings under the name “Sunrise Apartment Fire Fund." This is the time of year when head lice may show up in your child's hair. To prevent head lice among children at school, we ask that you remind your child to not share personal items such as hats, combs and brushes, and that you check your child's head weekly for the presence of head lice. The wet combing technique, as described in the Getting Rid of Head Lice pamphlet, is now recognized as the best method for detecting, according to Harvard Public Health. You can download this pamphlet at http://schools.sd42.ca/alouette/files/2009/01/Head_Li ce_Treatment_Options1.pdf If you detect head lice on your child, please follow either of the treatment options as described in the handout, and notify the school. Chemical treatments, hair conditioner and lice combs are available at most drugstores. It is important that you follow the directions carefully. We would appreciate each family taking the time to read the information provided in the handout package. Early If you would prefer to donate household items, clothing, etc., the Sunrise Apartment Fire Donations and Support Facebook page has been set up to coordinate such donations (www.facebook.com/groups/373872869483303). Our school district is working closely with Emergency Social Services to support and coordinate our response of care.
