Event 2 is... Blowin’ In The Wind Objective: The objective in this event is take the air current created by a hair dryer (or equivalent) and design/build a device that harnesses this air current in order to lift a mass the greatest height. For this event, you will only be allowed to use: 4 plastic cups, 3 paper plates, 4 straws, 3 pipe cleaners, two sandwich bags, 1 meter of duct tape, 1 meter of string, 5 sheets of paper, one hanging folder, 2 note cards. Building Codes: The materials provided are the only materials that may be used. The device may be as large or as small as you wish. Some hair dryers will be available on build days. The “blower” on test day may, or may not, be the same strength. You may use the physics mass-sets. However, all masses must be returned to the case after each class - do not lose them! No part of your device can touch the blower. Your device must not leave room 3409 for this Event. Building Codes (con) The blower will be turned on 3 times for 30 seconds each. There will be a 60 second pause between blows. You may adjust your device during the pauses, but not touch your device during the blows. That’s a total testing time of 3.5 minutes. Teams may choose to lift any amount of mass they wish The device may touch the ground during testing but you cannot touch the device. No counterbalances may be used. You may not use tables, chairs, walls, etc. Teams will be lifting masses from the physics mass sets. On test day, your team will receive an additional 50 cm of duct tape to secure your device to the floor near the blower. The height lifted will be determined by the maximum height attained at any point in a run. Your device will have to fit on a lab peninsula. Refer to the markings (in tape) as to where the air stream will come from. Masses lifted must be visible to the judge. If you choose to touch your device during the 60 second pause, you must reset your mass. If you choose to not touch the device, you may leave the mass where it was after the previous run. Scoring: Scores will be calculated by multiplying your mass in grams by the height lifted squared. (Score = Mass x H^2). Mass measured in grams, height in cm. Height lifted will be measured from the initial height of mass to maximum height attained in the 90 second testing period. Tier 1: Codes followed, mass is lifted, ranked by Scores. Tier 2: Mass not lifted or codes not followed. Tier 2 groups to share a common score 0.5 pts. below lowest Tier 1 score. Timeline: You’ll have all day Friday (5/22) to build. Devices are due at 8:15am on Wednesday 5/27. Testing will occur on Wednesday 5/27 at 8:20am.
