We are heading into another busy month and want to highlight a couple of things coming up. We want to invite everyone to our school play ”Tom Sawyer”, which will be running from May 11th -14th. The play features our grade 7 students in acting roles, while our grades 3-6 have supporting roles in the choir. This year promises to be another excellent run. Performance times are indicated later in this newsletter. Track and Field season (along with Splash and Dash season) start in April. Please see dates below. We also have had a string of assemblies recently (and soon), with the BC Lions the district Grade 5 choir and a Harlem Globetrotter coming to visit us with strong messages of making good choices. . We have basketball and team handball all wrapping up this month. Badminton clinic running in a couple of weeks. And on the social responsibility front, we have the Vow of Silence coming up soon We also have Ms. Pile, our Child Youth Support worker making class presentations on personal responsibility in the intermediate grades and friendship skills in the primary grades.. Busy month. Let’s hope for more wonderful weather like today. (Great to see so many of you out at Fletcher’s Challenge)! Finally, it is with a sad heart that we wish adieu to Ms. Collins, who will be moving to be vice-principal at McGirr next year. UVIC SCIENCE SHOW LITERACY (Reprinted from last year, but still a good one) Did you know that more than half of Canadians (55%) do not have the minimum skills necessary to meet the information demands of today’s world? Literacy levels affect family in-come, health and quality of life. Canadians with lower levels of literacy are more likely to earn less and use computers less frequently. Conversely, higher literacy skills correlate to greater involvement in community groups and volunteer activities. Working in partnership with the school to enhance your child’s ability to access information is the best way to enable them to achieve their goals and reach their potential in life. Research tells us there is a predictable reading slump occurring around Grade 4. One might assume by then that kids can read well enough on their own, but this is precisely the time when reading material becomes more challenging. We often say: In the primary grades, children learn to read and in the intermediate years, they read to learn. Tips: 1. Don’t stop reading aloud to them once they can read independently—instead, simply take turns being the narrator. 2. Set a monthly goal in terms of reading minutes. Chart the progress and then reward your child with a new book, sticker or bookmark. 3. Encourage your child to develop an interest in different literary genres, such as adventure, mystery, fantasy and poetry. 4. Develop the habit of giving books or magazine subscriptions as gifts for birthdays or other special occasions MOUNTAIN VIEW SPORTS UPDATE BASKETBALL Basketball continues and the coaches/sponsors for this year are: Pee Wee Girls: Mrs. Baird; Pee Wee Boys: Mr. Brick; Bantam Girls: Ms. Collins and Mrs. Kirk; Bantam Boys: Mrs. Falk and two Mr. Falks;. Thank you to all volunteers. So far all teams are doing quite well in their leagues. The pee wees will finish this week and the bantams will have playoffs that could finish as late as the middle of the month as well. GRADE 4/5 INTRAMURALS Team Handball will wrap up in by the end of April. We had over 50 students participating. Congratulations to all the students who participated and thanks to Mr. Brick for organizing and Mrs. Gueulette and Mrs. Mjaaland for supervising. Track and Field 2015 All Mountain View students in grades 3 to 7 will have the opportunity to compete on: School Track Meet – April 27th Zone Track Meet – May 27th District Track Meet – June 4th All meets occur at the NDSS Rotary Bowl Over 25 parents and community volunteers are needed to make this a successful season (on April 27th) . Thanks to Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Brick for organizing/sponsoring. We have over 40 students grades 3-7 partaking in the swimming and running. All the action takes place at Beban Swimming Pool at 3:00 – 5:00 pm. HOMEWORK CLUB/GAMES CLUB/ROBOT CLUB A reminder that we offer a homework club Monday to Thursday at big recess for all ages. Thank you to Mrs. Kirkpatrick,Mrs. Patton and Mrs. Cronan for doing this. Games Club runs on Tuesday and Thursday at big recess. Thanks to Mrs. Gueulette and Mr. Brick for this. And, finally, thanks to Mr. Silk, who runs our Robot Club after school on Tuesdays for grades 4-7 . See you there. LIBRARY NEWS www.bookfest.ca BookFest 2015 is taking place Saturday, May 2nd in downtown Nanaimo. The hub of activity will be in the Diana Krall Plaza, while the presenter sessions are held in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre and the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Art Lab. Free Pre-school sessions will be held in the Nanaimo Museum and are available for children under 5 with an accompanying adult. Tickets are $10 per child for 3 sessions, to a maximum of $25 per family. Read about our presenters and check out the BookFest schedule to choose your 3 sessions. What better way to promote summer reading with our students than by stocking up on books and at the same time putting books back into the classrooms. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair, up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our classrooms. You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Your child will be bringing home a Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a few of the many books available to purchase at our Fair. The flyer also contains an entry form that can be dropped off during the book fair. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your classroom! MOUNTAIN VIEW DRESS CODE With the warmer weather comes the need to wear lighter clothing. Please remember that school is a workplace for your child/children and what may be acceptable attire at the beach or other places may not necessarily be acceptable at the workplace. At Mountain View School, we follow the SD #68 Dress Code guidelines and add our own guidelines with respect to “revealing” clothing. (i) SD #68 Guidelines Appropriate dress is considered to be that which: Is safe Is free of any reference to alcohol, drugs, gangs, hate, obscenity, profanity, racism/discrimination, sex and or violence Is not disturbing or distracting to others within the school setting. Mountain View Dress code guidelines : In addition to SD # 68 guidelines, Mountain view School has adopted the following dress code guidelines: Students wearing clothes that are found to be distracting or “revealing” will be asked to “cover up” or phone home for more appropriate clothing. A rule of thumb is that tops join bottoms and undergarments remain unseen. Also, shoulders should be covered – no spaghetti straps. No hats allowed in the building TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM The new sound field that Mrs. Anton won for her class! WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN (SEPTEMBER 2015 STUDENTS) There will be an event for students starting Kindergarten in September 2015 on Friday, May 22nd from 9:15-10:45 AM. Please ensure you have registered your child for Kindergarten, as well as for this session if you plan to attend. We will contact you if you have registered here and are in our catchment. If you are not from our catchment, you should attend the Welcome to Kindergarten event in your area as we are only given supplies for students in our catchment. PHOTO DAY For class photos is Wednesday, May 20th Are you MOVING AWAY this summer? This is the time of year when schools start compiling enrolment projections and building tentative class configurations for the next school year. It is always helpful and appreciated whenever families let us know in advance when they know their children will not be returning in September. Please call the office if you are thinking of moving away or changing schools. STUDENT REGISTRATION 2015 Registration for September 2015 has begun. Children who will be five years of age before January 1, 2016, may enter school in September 2015. You may defer your child's enrolment until September 2016. You are encouraged to register your child as soon as you can. Please bring your child's birth certificate and proof of address. To obtain an assured space in your catchment-area school, please register as soon as possible. If you know of children of kindergarten age in the neighborhood, we’d be pleased if you would pass the word. Registration for out of catchment students is now over for 2015. PARENTAL PLACEMENT REQUESTS FOR NEXT YEAR We would like to clarify our position on parental requests for placement of students in certain classes and with certain teachers. Parents should understand the assignment of students into classes each year is a careful process where considerable time and effort is spent by staff. Only parental requests based on an educational reason will be considered. Parental requests should be placed in writing with sound educational reasons given. It must be stressed there are no guarantees of class placement based on parental request. Requests must be received (addressed to Mr. Brick) by May 29th.
