2.0 INTRODUCTION
UVIKIUTA would like to welcome you to participate in the International volunteer service projects in Tanzania. The program is prepared to provide a unique,
challenging and fulfilling experience not only to the volunteers but also to the host communities. We see this program as a vital part of the overall learning
experience, learning and sharing positive participation.
UVIKIUTA is a Youth development and non-profit organization established in 1983 to respond to the needs of young women and men to raising living standards
through developing and enhancing social and economic capacities. We are the founder member of EAWA Network (Eastern Africa Work-camps Association),

Partner of Service civil International-SCI, Network, Partnering with volunteer sending and hosting organization in 24 countries around the world some been
members of NVDA, ALLIANCE and CCIV Networks. We have been working as well very closely with UNDP-UNV in Tanzania country office.
3.0 LONG AND MEDIUM TERM VOLUNTEER- LMTV PROJECTS
Long and medium term volunteer project involve individuals or groups of volunteers join up to live and work together in a project brought forward by a local
community. This is a personality-building and self-discovering experience. It is a journey not only through the geography of our planet, but also a journey
through many cultures. The program brings together volunteers from different cultures and backgrounds to promote mutual understanding and lasting peace
through practical actions.
3.1 General Condition for Participation in UVIKIUTA-Tanzania LMTV Projects
a) Age: Volunteers must have passed his/her 20th birthday on the arrival date to the project. There is no age limit. Senior volunteers are encouraged to
join.
b) Motivation: Volunteers should be interested in volunteer work, open minded, flexible, and interested in culture and conditions in Tanzania
c) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organizations in the country of volunteer’s resident at least three months before the
project start. Application form should be accompanied with scanned copy of passport (personal details page), motivation letter and signed Participation
agreement (See attachment at the end)
d) Duration: Volunteer can stay in the project for a minimum of eight (8) weeks maximum six months, provided that the placement is available.
e) Language: Official Languages of the projects are English and Kiswahili
f)
Meals and Accommodation: Volunteers will be placed in the host families. Meals and accommodation will be provided in the family for the entire
period of the project.
g) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers.
h) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all
necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. Please check with Tanzanian high commission/Embassy or consular nearest to you for more updated
information.

Description: This project is organised in Partnership with Local early childhood education centres after 2 years of implementing pilot project to support
the initiative of local community members to provide early childhood education services. The main goal of the project is to help children develop
cognitively and socially introduce them to the school setting and prepare them for Primary school education. Through early childhood education,
children gain long-lasting academic and social benefits that will benefit them throughout their lives..
Type of Work: Academic skills development: To assist Children to develop academic skills on literacy, mathematics, science and even social studies.
Physical Development: To support the children to learn about moving - demonstrates basic gross motor skills, demonstrates basic fine motor skills.
Cognitive Development: To assist children learn about the world - sustains attention, understands how objects can be used, shows a beginning
understanding of cause and effect, shows a beginning understanding that things can be grouped, uses problem solving strategies, engages in pretend
play. Social development: To support the children about self and others - trusts known, caring adults, regulates own behavior, plays with other children,
learns to be a member of a group, and uses personal care skills. Language development: To learn about communicating - develops receptive language,
develops expressive language, participates in conversations, understands and uses words, enjoys books and being read to, shows an awareness of
pictures and print, experiments with drawing and writing.
Leisure: Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen,
Beach/Swimming), Mikumi National Park (Wild life safari).
Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in the host families allocated near/close to the schools; other options might be in the Youth hostel sharing
with other volunteers. Volunteers should be ready for both options.
Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required, however a potential volunteer should be; open minded and independent, Interest in
working with Children, Able to work under limited resources and less supervision. Skills on psychosocial support and guidance, interactive games,
handling children issues and counselling stand an added advantage.
Location: The Project will take place in Mbande about 45km South of Dar es salaam. Volunteers will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport,
Dar es Salaam.
Remarks: International participants are required to pay an extra fee €300 per month. The fee covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival
in Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, local transport to the placement food and accommodation during the program. The fee also

Description: This project is organised in Partnership with Msongola School, a community public school. English language is an official language of
instruction (Teaching) in all secondary schools across Tanzania. However, Pupils will start using the English as Language of instruction in all subjects when
they enter form one at the age of 13-14. This has been experienced as one of the challenge to master their subjects. This project is aiming to
develop/improve speaking, writing, and reading English language among the pupils so that they can manage their studies. interest and availability of
resources, there is a big possibilities to have extra activities for the students like sports, games, and other recreational and extra curricula activities.
Type of Work: Volunteer’s tasks will be to assisting academic staff in teaching English as well the remedial classes (Slow learners).
Leisure: Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen,
Beach/Swimming), Mikumi National Park (Wild life safari).
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the local Youth hostel. 2-4 volunteers will share room. Participants will be required to carry own
mosquito nets. Kitchen staff will be available through out to support volunteers in preparing the meals. Other option could be in the host families.
Volunteers should be ready for both options depending on the availability.
Requirements: This project is suitable for volunteers who are:- 20 Years and above, Interest in working with young people, Open minded and
independent, Good team players, Able to work under limited resources and less supervision, some experience, Knowledge or studies in speaking, writing
and reading English Language at high school or University, be patient, willing to teach and play with young people, sociable, communicative and
creative (Mandatory).
Location: The project will take place in Msongola about 45km South of Dar es salaam. Volunteers will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International
Airport, Dar es Salaam.
Remarks: International participants are required to pay an extra fee €300 per month. The fee covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival

Project Name/Topic: Community Library
Work/Type: EDU-CULT
Description: Community Library was an initiative of both UVIKIUTA and the past volunteer who so the need in the community especially young people
and students to access books for various uses like reference, text and even entertainment. The library project was then established to cutter for this
services including proving information related to the young people current issues in forms of brochures, books, magazines, video etc. The project which
is still under construction is also expecting to have an Internet café to offer access to information for youth and the entire community.
Type of Work: Promoting culture of reading in the community by organizing various activities like reading competitions, visitation to the local schools
etc., Receiving visitors coming to the Library and manage visitors records, Book collection and shelving, Researching and collection of various reading
materials from various local sources, Help in fundraising for the development of the community Library.

Project Name/Topic: Cultural Exchange Work/Type: CULT-SOCI
Description: The work camp will take place in an Eco village is situated in Magole south of Dar es Salaam, a place of very best of current thinking on
sustainable human settlements. Within the Eco village, sustainable values are expressed in the built environment with ecological houses, innovative use
of building materials such as local bricks, beauty in the architecture and gardens. Sustainable values are also expressed in the community's social,
cultural, economic and educational initiatives. The project is aiming to expose volunteers and local community to people from different cultural,
religious, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds and in so doing provide the opportunity for all to develop a greater understanding of diversity.
For over ten years now the project allows the volunteers to interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves and to participate in
new and unique experiences beyond their own communities. Cultural exchange assists everybody involved to develop positive relationships with others,
understand a broader range of perspectives, and develop the knowledge and skills needed for participation in our multicultural society.
Type of Work: Volunteers will be involved in number of activities leading to exposure; Kiswahili Language, cooking classes, home stay, drumming and
dancing classes, arts and craft.

Description: Development Education is a program aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and
unequal world in which we live. It seeks to engage people in analysis, reflection, and action for local and global citizenship and participation. It is about
supporting people to understand and to act to transform the social, cultural, political and economic structures which affect their lives and those of others
at personal, community and international levels. UVIKIUTA has various projects under this program: International volunteer projects (workcamps) which
run throughout the year across the country, Long and medium term volunteer program and Youth exchange programs among many others.
Type of Work: Volunteers will be helping the program staff on the following activities:- Meeting volunteers at the Airport and Bus/Railways stations
when coming to the project. Registration and other logistics for the volunteers, such as arranging accommodation, transport, etc. Summarizing and
analyzing the evaluation reports .Documentation of the project activities including filming and photographic. Editing program documents and promotion
and recruitment of new volunteers.
Leisure: Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen,
Beach/Swimming), Mikumi National Park (Wild life safari).

Description The adult education project is a project established by UVIKIUTA (Youth development organization in Tanzania) to provide opportunity to
young people and young adult out of school to have an opportunity to learn various skills for their personal and professional growth. The project has
been running over the last four years.
Type of Work: Volunteers will be helping in teaching English language to the young people and adult out of schools. Sometimes those in schools need
extra support to master language. The age of the language class students will be from the age of 17 to 30 men and women.
Leisure: Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen,
Beach/Swimming), Mikumi National Park (Wild life safari).

Project Name/Topic: Sports for Community Action
Work/Type: CULT-YOUTH
Location: Vigoa-TEMEKE
Description Sports for community action is a project established by the community Youth group with the aim of providing opportunity for children and
young people in the surrounding communities to gain various skills be aware of development issues affecting their beings. The project sees sports as an
ideal mechanism and engages children and youth. In this project sports is defined as traditional games, soccer, basketball, volleyball, dance etc. Sports is
an enabler and time occupier for otherwise Idle young people also it provide extra activities for children after school hours for their physical growth. The
project uses the value of sports as vehicle for leadership, development, empowerment, bringing gender inequalities, improving education successes,
enhancing economic opportunities and social inclusion of marginalized groups including girls, disabled and youths. These values include team work,
respect, decision making, volunteerism, integrity, self-esteem, conflict management, and communication skills as vital life skills.
Type of Work: Organizing and teaching various sports, games, songs and dances to the groups of Children and young people. Children here are
defined as those from the age of 6-15 while young people will be the older ones.
Leisure: Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen,
Beach/Swimming), Mikumi National Park (Wild life safari).
