Growing and Learning together with your deaf child A weekend for parents and whānau to learn and connect The New Zealand Federation for Deaf Children with support from the Ministry of Education is hosting a weekend hui for parents and whānau of deaf children aged 0-5. The weekend is an opportunity for families from across New Zealand to spend a few days sharing and gaining information, ideas and skills. It will also be an opportunity to enjoy the company of other families. The programme includes participation of people who are skilled and experienced in raising deaf children and supporting their language and social development. The themes that will be covered over the weekend include: Diverse experiences in raising deaf children Understanding hearing levels and audiology Auditory Verbal Therapy Assisted listening Bilingualism: using both New Zealand Sign language (NZSL) and English Beginner classes in NZSL for those who are interested Ways of encouraging positive behaviour Storytelling and music – engaging your deaf child Transitions to preschool and school – what’s ahead New Zealand Sign Language interpreters will be provided to help Deaf and hearing participants to fully participate. The hui will be held at: Living Springs 218 Bamfords Road Governors Bay Lyttelton Christchurch 8971 The hui will start on Friday 10 April 2015 at 5pm, and finish on Sunday 12 April 2015 at 2pm. The costs of flights for those living outside reasonable driving distance of Christchurch, accommodation and all meals will be covered. A contribution of $50 per family for the weekend is required to secure your place at the hui. If paying $50 would cause you financial hardship please contact us to discuss a reduced rate.
