On April 25, Cleveland District Sate High School paid homage to the
soldiers who fought in our honour. On behalf of the school, Senior
School Captains Madi Nix and Alexandra Tabrett attended the dawn
service in Cleveland at the new cenotaph. The turnout at the service
was estimated to be about ten thousand creating a solemn and
respectful atmosphere. It was great to see the community gathered to
commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli landing. Due to the large
number attending this year, the service was also displayed over a
massive screen. It was fantastic to see our school so well
represented. Following is a report on the day from one of our school
leaders, Madi Nix.

“Last Saturday, April 25, was an extremely solemn day that marked
one hundred years since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps'
involvement in the Gallipoli campaign. Since 1915, the day has
become one of remembrance of all our fallen soldiers and those who
have served in the past and present. On Saturday, Cleveland District
State High School was privileged to be invited to march with returned
Soldiers, Cadets, Scouts, Girls Guides and other schools in the annual
ANZAC Day parade.

Our students who were lucky enough to march in remembrance and
commemoration of our soldiers in past and present conflicts, were
humbled by the experience. It was a truly reflective moment to march
safely through the streets of Cleveland, knowing that the sacrifices of
our soldiers one hundred years ago made it possible for us to do so
today.
Cleveland District State High School was extremely honoured to be a
part of this parade and hope for another such opportunity in the future.”

Premier's ANZAC Prize Winner
Gemma Price in Year 10 was one of the 70 students from across
Queensland to win the Premier’s ANZAC Prize. Recipients of the prize
attended the Anzac Day centenary event in Gallipoli and will tour the
Western Front over two weeks in April and May 2015.
Gemma was also selected, along with another student, to lay the
wreath at Lone Pine. She got to speak to HRH Prince Charles and
discussed her grandfather's medals with the Prime Minister, Tony
Abbott and Mrs Abbott.

Cleveland High ANZAC Ceremony
On Tuesday 24 April Cleveland District State High School held its
annual ANZAC Day Ceremony to commemorate the 100th Anniversary
of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp troops at
Gallipoli. As well as stopping to remember and reflect on the sacrifice
made by soldiers at Gallipoli, this ceremony also serves to remind the
students of the significance of remembering all Australians who served
and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
We were privileged this year to welcome our guest speaker, Troop
Commander Lieutenant Matthew Murphy from the 7th Combat Signal
Regiment at the Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera who gave a moving
address to our 1877 students in Years 7 to 12.
Our Cadets, Chayce Pullen, Mady Van Der Donk, Jaime Taylor, Abbey
Taylor, Lachlan Welch and Tyler Nordberg were an important part of
our Commemorative Ceremony and they were outstanding.
The traditional playing of the last post, reveille, and the reading of The
Ode and Flanders’ Field reiterated to the students the ANZAC spirit of
courage, mateship, selflessness, loyalty and sacrifice.
Jacqueline Duckworth sang ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and Iliganoa Patu
sang the New Zealand National Anthem ‘God Defend New Zealand’
and they were accompanied by our Wind Ensemble which was
directed by Mr Shane Purnell. The Senior Vocal Ensemble performed
Amazing Grace and Little Red Poppy and they were directed by
Rebecca Purnell.

Music Camp 2015
Last Term we had 120 students attend the annual Music camp held at
Camp Currimundi.
All the Concert Bands, String Ensembles, Choirs, Small Ensembles
and Jazz Bands rehearsed and workshopped a range of pieces,
culminating in a light concert at the end of camp on Sunday.
In addition to the music making, all students participated in team
building activities, sporting opportunities, beach walks and the famous
Dodge Ball competition (the Year 12s did annihilate the staff!).
It was a great opportunity to kick start the year and prepare for our
upcoming Showcase Concert held on Friday May 29 at the Community
Hall.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy
(NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

On Tuesday 12 (periods 1-5), Wednesday 13 (periods 1-2) and
Thursday 15 May (periods 1-5), students in Years 7 and 9 will take the
2015 NAPLAN tests.
NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed
over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail
type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy
and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children.
An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later this year.
Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is
progressing and to identify any areas of concern.
Please ensure your child is prepared for these tests, by providing a
nutritious breakfast and morning tea each day, sufficient rest and sleep
each evening and the required materials including: 2 x 2B or HB
pencils, an eraser, sharpener and calculator for the Numeracy –
calculator allowed test.
District Cross Country
Congratulations to our School Cross Country Team that won the
Bayside Carnival on Friday, April 24 held at Capalaba Park. We have
seen the team grow and improve of the past two years and winning this
year’s carnival demonstrates the commitment and persistence our
students have employed. Mr Corby, Miss Host and Miss Buckley were
impressed with the desire that was demonstrated by our athletes and
for giving their best. It was truly a team performance with Cleveland
High placing first or second in every age division bar one. Some
notable performances were as follows:

Our Open Boys team finished their final District Cross Country winning
each age group every year since they were in Year 8 in 2011.
Congratulations to this group of boys for their dominance as a team for
the past five years.

trials to be held on May 19 at John Paul College:

Chinese Excursion to Chung-Tian Temple

On April 1, forty-three students participated in a Chinese excursion to
the Chung-Tian Temple to experience a taste of Chinese culture
through various activities. The students enjoyed a sense of calm
through tea ceremony and calligraphy and they went through a spiritual
journey via meditation, a visit to the pagoda and listening to the history
of Buddha. Each student had the chance to ring the wishing bell.
The students enjoyed an immersion of Chinese food at a restaurant in
Sunnybank where they learnt how to use chopsticks and had a taste of
fried rice, salt and pepper pork chops, stir-fried beef, prawn crackers
and many other dishes.
Through the excursion, students learnt to appreciate Chinese culture,
as well as understand and foster awareness of cultural and language
diversity as a global citizen.
Graphics Update
Recently the Year 12 Graphics classes have completed a task to
design and graphically present an easily transportable student desk.
The designs were intended to be suitable for use by the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as part of their Educational Equity
program when rebuilding schools after a disaster situation.
Unfortunately, our task was made very relevant to us, as during the unit
we saw examples of where these designs could be used in Vanuatu
and Nepal.
Year 9 Wood Technology have been working on a personalised, hinged

storage box. Karissa Kars has made a particularly good example with
her design.
While we haven’t got room here to show you all the great work that has
been done by students here is a small snippet of student work in
response to this design problem.

Sunshine Performance
Congratulations to the students who were involved in the extremely
successful combined schools drama project, “Sunshine”. These
students researched, devised, rehearsed and performed this dramatic
piece in their own time over the span of six months. The students
performed alongside four other local schools to create a meaningful,
funny and at times heartbreaking dramatic performance about local
and national narratives from WW1 at the Redlands Performing Arts
Centre last week.
Students had the opportunity of working with renowned professional
theatre company ‘debase Productions’ during this creative project. The
students gained valuable experience while working with professionals,
other students and the wider community.

Snow Tour 2015
Unfortunately this year’s Ski Trip has been cancelled because of
insufficient numbers. Students who have paid deposits can get their full
refund upon the completion of an “application for refund” form. These
forms are available from the school office. If the school has bank
account details of the family, a direct deposit can be arranged.
This is very disappointing for all concerned with the tour.

Legal Studies Excursion
On Thursday 23 April, the Year 11 Legal Studies students visited the
Supreme and District Courts in Brisbane. During this visit the students
were given a twenty minute talk by Honourable Justice John H Byrne,
a Supreme Court Judge, who informed the students of court protocol
and the impartiality and purpose of being a judge in the Queensland
Courts process. Students were then able to view court proceedings of
criminal and civil matters and also saw the sentencing process carried
out.
Students were then taken to the Roma Street Police Headquarters,
where they were given an insight into the forensic process Police
Officers use to establish the evidence of a criminal matter and after
this, had the opportunity to look through the Police museum, which
exhibits Queensland Police memorabilia.
The students found this excursion extremely valuable and will be able
to use their experiences in their upcoming learning and assessment in
Legal Studies.
High Resolves Program 2015

On April 2 a group of our Year 9 students participated in their very first
session of the High Resolves Program. The High Resolves program
teaches global citizenship and global leadership and endeavours to
equip our students with the tools to become global citizens for the 21st
century. Through this program the students are invited to learn more
about what they can do in our local community, the global community,
leadership skills and how to make a difference. The Global Leadership
Program asks students to participate in a variety of activities during
Year 9 and then the students go on to plan and deliver an action
project. During this part of the program, students benefit from the
guidance of mentors through numerous workshops and attend an
annual leadership summit.
The first day of this program saw students engage in developing their
conflict resolution skills as well as practicing their ability to enable large
groups of people to engage in collective action. During their first day,
students engaged in a number of team building and leadership
exercises where they also began to identify their own personal
leadership qualities. Students thoroughly enjoyed the scenarios
presented, worked exceptionally hard and were enthusiastic about the
program days ahead. I really look forward to working with this great
group of students and seeing what wonderful objectives they achieve
through High Resolves.

Round Two of the Queensland Debating Union has seen many highs
and lows, but above all our debaters continue to improve.
First up was Year 9 who took the affirmative side of the topic, “That
Australians should be banned from staying and defending their
property during natural disasters” against Iona College. Year 9 had
worked hard to craft strong arguments and their hard work paid off
when they defeated their rivals. After being defeated by Iona College in
Round One, our Year 9 team were very happy with their hard-earned
win.
Next up were the Year 10 and Year 12 teams, who debated on the
same night. The Year 10 team had their first short preparation round,
which entails being given a topic and one hour to prepare the debate.
This is an extremely challenging task but the team rose to the occasion
and were victorious against San Sisto College. Our Year 12 team had
the challenging task of taking the negative side of the topic, “That we
regret the decision of Triple J to exclude Taylor Swift from the Hottest
100”. Although they fought hard, they were narrowly defeated by
Kimberley College by a very small margin. All speakers demonstrated
outstanding public speaking skills and are to be congratulated on their
skill and expertise despite their loss.
Finally, the Year 8 team (pictured above: Keyara, Rachael, Tess and
Hannah) took the negative side of the topic, “That we should ban
reality television shows which are focussed on children” against
Alexandra Hills State High School. Although they didn’t win, they
impressed adjudicators with their superior rebuttal skills and strong
argumentation.
Congratulations to all teams for their hard work. We wish them the best
of luck for the next round!

Head Lice
Head lice are a very common problem in schools and institutions
everywhere in the world. We have recently had a few reports of head
lice and ask you to be vigilant in checking your students. While they
are not a threat to health and do not transmit disease, they do cause a
lot of distress and anxiety for families and schools. Anyone can get
head lice. They affect all socioeconomic groups and are not a sign of
poor hygiene. They have no preference for ethnic background, hair
colour, hair type or age. There is no reason to keep your child home
from school but we request that your child has been treated prior to
coming to school if they have an active case.
Head lice live on the hair and feed by sucking blood from the scalp.
They are pale grey in colour before feeding and reddish brown after
feeding. Live eggs (sometimes called nits) are glued to the hair shaft
within a distance of 1.5 cm from the scalp. They hatch in 7-10 days as
young lice (nymphs). It takes up to ten days for the nymphs to become
mature lice and begin laying eggs. Transmission is by close head to
head contact, such as playing, hugging or working closely.

While most people with head lice will not develop an itch, a small
number of people develop an itch due to an allergic reaction to the
saliva of the louse. Scratching can give rise to secondary bacterial
infections on the scalp. Swelling of lymph nodes (adenopathy) in the
neck can occur in some people due to this infection.
Treatment:
The most effective way to detect head lice is by using the hair
conditioner and combing method. You will need white coloured hair
conditioner, an ordinary comb, a fine tooth head lice comb and white
tissues or paper towel.
Apply sufficient white conditioner to dry hair to completely cover the
scalp and hair from roots to tips.
Use an ordinary comb to detangle hair and evenly distribute the
conditioner. Divide the hair into four sections.
Comb hair from root to tips using a fine tooth head lice comb. After
each stroke, wipe the comb onto a white tissue, checking the comb
and tissue for head lice. Comb the whole head, checking for lice.
Put all tissues in a plastic bag, tie the top and put the bag in a
rubbish bin.
The conditioner blocks the louse's breathing pores and stuns the louse.
This, together with the slippery effect of the conditioner, makes it easy
to mechanically remove the lice.
Importantly: Repeat the conditioner and combing method every
second day to remove the young nymphs as they hatch. Continue until
no live lice are found for ten consecutive days. If the problem continues
there are synthetic/chemical conditioners which may help. Ask at your
local pharmacist.
