As we embark on our 156th year as a club something seems to be changing. After 10 years of our Academy we have appointed our first Academy product, Joe Barrs, as 1st XI skipper. This has drawn a number of new young players to the club to play alongside our own youngsters, many of whom had the opportunity to step up to the higher teams last year. The average age of the 1st XI will be about 22. This emphasis on youth will build on the achievement the first time in our history there is a real sense of excitement around the club with much talk of pride and commitment and the importance of training. Matt Gouldstone moves to Saffron Walden with his wife, Gemma, having spent some months coaching in Tasmania. We also welcome Alex Beadle, Jon Buck, Tom Bonham, Tom Goodwin, Jack Heald, Aaron Pledger, Ali Russell, Matt Sherry, Mark ThompAlong with the appoint- son, Josh Beaumont and ment of a club coach for . Andy Wright . Our friend, Niraj Odedra returns for of our u16s in winning, for the first time in our history, the Essex Matchplay competition. Nearly all of those players will continue playing at a senior level for SWCC or other local teams, having graduated from the Academy in such a glorious manner! Another great achievement was the promotion of the 2nd XI to the league next down from the EAPL—again with a very young side. For matches and training please be ‘sun safe’ - cap, water and appropriate protection against sun. Attendance at training is important and is a factor in all selection decisions. Where are they now? Our very successful Presentation Evening in September allowed us to reinstate some awards , all in the name of former players, that had fallen into abeyance over the years. We will feature them here in the coming months; E..J. Land, H.J. Cheffins, H.M Housden, Ron Muggeridge and Alan Leason. We would be pleased to hear from readers about these players. Club Kit Our relationship with Gray Palmers has proved highly successful. The service and stock management is far more efficient and professional than when we managed it! Following a Survey Monkey poll of members we have extended our kit range this year to include a club polo shirt (for training or social wear) and a hoody. We have also placed an order for new club helmets. Don’t forget that Mr Cricket (Burwell) are the nearest specialist cricket suppliers and the club benefits from a loyalty scheme every time you shop there. Close season For those who run the club, January to March is probably the busiest part of the ‘cricket season’! Fixtures, coaching, kit, clubhouse, ground, catering, fund-raising, recruitment of players and volunteers—all need attention. A great weekend at the end of March saw almost 100 members—players, parents, volunteers, VPs—attend what will be an annual club pre-season dinner. The following day almost 50 players attended a special training session at Fenners. A volunteer day saw the clubhouse tidied up with ‘new’ furniture from the Golf Club installed. Thank you to the Golf Club for this and other support they give us, including a venue for committee meetings in the newly refurbished clubhouse. If we get the close season right the summer will be a breeze! THE DEXTER Sponsors Pelly’s Solicitors, LPA and HCL continue to support the club on an ongoing basis. We are indebted for the support they give us. We welcome Arkwrights, Hot Pink Web Design, KMD Wealth Management, and Saffron Insurance to our growing portfolio of sponsors. We also acknowledge the support of; Adnams Brewery, Bentens, Burtons, Complete Imaging, Cheffins, Creativity Works, Goddards Electrical, Goddards Stoves, Gray Palmer, Jack and Jills, Kevin Henry, LPA, Peter Gale, Molecular Products, Mr Cricket, Paxtons, The Old English Gentleman, Rajdhani Restaurant, Saffron Snooker Club, Saffron Sport, Saffron Walden PAT Testing, Tony Dorren, United Sports, Wilbey and Burnett and Wilburs. We thank Trident plc for their sponsorship of polo shirts for club staff. The Friends of Bridge End Gardens work closely with us. Field in Trust Net Appeal We have raised £13,000 towards our revised target of £28,000 in order to extend our net cage. This is so important if we are to continue to meet the demand placed on our facilities and to do so in a way that is safe. The project will provide two additional nets and a small outdoor storage area. Thank you to those of you who have contributed in ways large or small. We also acknowledge the support of Saffron Walden Round Table who gave us £500 from the Carnival Proceeds and also the Essex Big Society Fund that has already provided a grant to enable us to buy the ‘carpet’. Please consider whether or not you can donate. Remember, it is possible for individual UK tax payers to donate and enable us to claim back tax paid via the Gift Aid scheme. Further details from the chairman— David Barrs ([email protected]) With the support of our landlords, the Town Council, we have secured ‘Field in Trust’ status for the Anglo American Playing Fields. One of Saffron Walden’s hidden gems and one much envied in the cricketing circles of East Anglia, this status gives the club and the town some reassurance that the ground will be protected for recreational use in the future. The FiT scheme was promoted as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. Under the guidance of our groundsman, Graham Sneath, the AAPF has again been awarded best ground in the East Anglian Premier league, and a similar award by the Essex Playing Fields Association—clearly worth protecting!
