Task Focus

being involved in the music industry.
To maintain your own health and safety and to maximise your enjoyment in you profession (or
hobby) it is important to:
 Know how to look after yourself
 Know the legislative requirements for OHS
There are many potentially dangerous situations that you will be exposed to in this industry ignorance is no excuse.

Assessment Overview
Your assessment will be completed in two parts:
1. Written responses based on the TPN OHS booklet (provided by your teacher)
 Observable behaviour and participation in practical activities
2. Maintain an OHS logbook (provided by your teacher)
3. A report based on the Safe Work Australia website
As you work through the TPN OHS Booklet, you are encouraged to join in with a healthy
discussion.
It is also recommended that you successfully complete each Quiz in Program Area 4 of
the TPN Student Site as part of the delivery program.

Part One:
OUTCOME 1 - WORK SAFELY
Read through Section 1 of the Occupational Health & Safety Booklet & answer the
following questions:

1. When a worker is injured in the workplace there are four main costs, what are
they?
2. What is the government agency that investigates workplace accidents?
3. Why are young people at risk of being injured in the workplace?

As you participate in setting up equipment, either as a performer or as a technician, you:
 Follow safety procedures as discussed in class
 Set up and power up equipment in accordance with established workplace
procedures.
OUTCOME 2 - IMPLEMENT WORKPLACE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Read through Section 2 of the Occupational Health & Safety Booklet & answer the

1. Describe two methods that you know of that reduce manual handling
injuries when moving equipment.
2. If you were given a container of cleaning fluid in a workplace and
requested to clean a bench surface, what precautions would you take
before beginning the task?
3. A band is playing in a live venue and the punters have complained about
the excess noise. Can you suggest two different methods of reducing the
punters exposure to the band’s excessive noise?
4. Machinery in workplaces, especially when working at heights, must have
guards or safety cages over moving parts. Describe why it is not safe to
use a machine without a guard in place.

Your school will probably call a rehearsal for an emergency evacuation at some stage
through the year. As a member of a school community you are required to participate in
these evacuation procedures intelligently and cooperatively. Additionally, you are

Follow appropriate procedures for responding to emergency incidents
Part Two: Maintain an OHS Logbook (Provided by your teacher)



You need to make at least four entries into your logbook.
The logbook will document hazards observed and how they were addressed.
Remember hazards can emerge from everyday situations – they do no need to
be big catastrophes!
Part Three: Report
Write a report (500 – 700 words) addressing the following sections:
You can write your report below or on a separate piece of paper. If you write it on a
separate piece of paper make sure that you keep it with your unit worksheet.
Section 1:
For this section visit the Safe Work Australia website and write a report about the
National strategy for OH&S in the workplace as set out by Safe Work Australia (SWA).
You will find the National OHS Strategy 2002 – 2012 in the About Safe Work Australia
Tab on the website.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the mission of SWA?
2. List the five priorities of the National strategy as set out by NOHSC.
3. Describe the national targets that NOHSC hope to achieve and by when?
4. Briefly explain what is meant by ‘duty of care’.
5. Who is responsible for OH&S in the workplace
Section 2: Hypothetical inspection: Rectify the identified OH&S hazards
From an inspection of a venue you identified that there was a lack of a First Aid kit in the
building.
1. What is the risk associated with the lack of First Aid kits? How will you control the
risk?
2. How many First Aid kits do you think are required at an all-ages music event?
Where do you think the First Aid kit(s) should be located? Briefly explain why?
3. What type of items should be stored in a First Aid kit for this type of venue? List
at least 10 items.
