CNDDB & BIOS: Online Resources for Botanists, Biologists, & Ecologists

Target Audience: Professional botanists, ecologists, land managers, resource specialists, academics, and
conservationists.
Description: The CNDDB/RareFind/BIOS class is a six-hour course describing the background, purpose, and use of both
the CNDDB dataset and the BIOS web-based map viewing tool (which includes access to the CNDDB). The class
includes instruction and exercises on using many of the tools in both the online RareFind 5 and in BIOS 5, as well as
viewing and querying the CNDDB dataset in BIOS.
Objectives: Participants will receive…
 A complete overview of the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB); what it is, where it came from,
what it tries to accomplish
 Comprehensive training in the use of RareFind5, which provides access to all of the rare species data in CNDDB
 Comprehensive training in the use of BIOS, which is CDFW’s online map viewer with access to natural resource
data, including CNDDB data.
Optional Preceding Course: The Rare Plant Survey Protocols: A Scientific Approach workshop is a two-day course
designed to approach rare plant surveys using the best scientific information available, and will compliment your online
resource skills with field survey training. It delivers a scientific approach on conducting proper background review,
evaluating ecological information, assessing annual phenology, appropriate study design, survey execution, and
adequate documentation of rare plant populations encountered. This portion of the course will be held at Borges Ranch
in Walnut Creek, CA (approx. 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Sacramento). Visit www.cnps.org/workshops for more
