TfL’s response to the main issues raised
This document summarises our response to the main issues raised. Set out below are the
main points put to us during the consultation and our response to these.
Our proposals
Transport for London (TfL) recently consulted on a proposal to reroute the 100 at Ludgate
Circus in the City of London via Queen Victoria Street. The route would no longer serve
New Bridge Street, Ludgate Hill nor St Paul’s Churchyard. These stops are served by
other frequent services and the new stops are nearby. After Queen Victoria Street the
route would continue along Friday Street to its current route on New Change.
We are proposing to make this change to improve current reliability of the service and
journey time.
In addition the new North-South Cycle Superhighway will introduce a two-way segregated
cycle lane between Elephant & Castle and Farringdon on the western side of Blackfriars
Road, New Bridge Street and Farringdon Street. This will mean that the Ludgate Circus
junction will be reduced in size and vehicles will no longer be able to turn right onto
Ludgate Hill.
Main issues raised and TfL's response
This is being done just to facilitate the North-South Cycle Superhighway/for
cyclists. The main cause of delays is the zebra crossing at St Paul's.
We proposed this change because current journey times can be improved for the majority
of passengers. These journey time savings will be maintained when the North-South Cycle
Superhighway is completed.
Ludgate Hill is a City of London road and they are very keen to make it pedestrian friendly
as walking is the main mode of transport in the City. The crossing has now been changed
to signal control.
Concern about loss of taxi ranking spaces next to the current bus stops/stands in
Queen Victoria Street.
The 100 bus will use the existing stop there and so there will be no loss of taxi rank
spaces.
Concerned about those with mobility problems and access to bus stops. There
should be countdown indicators at stops saying when next bus is due. Also the
change of route will place it on a much quieter street and therefore less safe.
The extra distance is about 100 yards at its furthest but is uphill and for some with mobility
problems they said this will cause them an issue. For those who want to change services
they can use St Paul’s Station on New Change as it is a short walk through the churchyard
to the St Paul’s Churchyard stop. People with mobility problems can also do this as the
ground is level here and the route through the churchyard is fully accessible. Queen
Victoria Street is a busy road with other buses regularly using the stops to be served by
the 100.
We will identify options for extra Countdown signs but in the meantime next bus
information is available via TfL’s website and smartphone apps.
Frequencies should be increased and double-deck bus or larger capacity buses
should be introduced to reduce overcrowding at peak times
Frequency is currently well matched to demand. The current vehicles are the largest that
can operate safely on the route and a low structure in Wapping prevents us from
introducing double deck buses.
Concern that the 100 bus was being re-routed away from London Wall. Wind-swept
London Wall needs some decent bus shelters
The re-routing is only between Blackfriars Junction and St Paul’s, there is no change at
London Wall and so the route will continue to serve the Museum of London. We will
identify options for shelters in London Wall.
There should be a direct bus connection between Wapping /Shadwell and London
Bridge. The 100 bus is the only bus link between the east and south and it should
go further east
We can not provide all direct links. There is a high frequency interchange between the 100
and London Bridge services at Aldgate or Bishopsgate. The route is already very long and
suffers from variable traffic conditions so extending the service further east would reduce
reliability.
Extending route 388 back to Temple Station to make a link to the Garden Bridge
The route was extended a few years ago to facilitate works at Blackfriars Station
temporarily. There is not enough demand from Temple to justify an extension.
Could the route run permanently through Leman Street with an additional stop near
Royal Mint/Cable Street? Buses sit in traffic on Dock Street - the journey to
Shadwell should go back to its original route
The City of London is carrying out long-term works at Aldgate gyratory and closed
Minories to southbound traffic. As a result route 100 was originally diverted via Dock
Street, but this has since been altered to be via Prescot Street, Mansell Street and East
Smithfield. This diversion is expected to be in place until highway works are completed on
Aldgate gyratory in October 2016. There are no plans to permanently re-route it via Leman
Street as that would break a significant number of direct links from Minories.
