The site is located within the Vauxhall Nine Elms, Battersea (VNEB) Opportunity Area and the Central Activities Zone and has been identified as an area of ‘high density mixed use housing led intensification’. In line with the planning policy context for the site, we intend to develop a residential mixed-use scheme. This development would help to deliver much needed homes, along with providing further employment opportunities, high quality public realm and improved pedestrian and cycle facilities. Detailed designs of the exterior of Nine Elms station will be submitted to Lambeth Council for approval later this year, and the design will be part of a common design theme across the NLE. We need to co-ordinate the design of the station and OSD structure. This is complicated and means the development of the OSD in particular, has been limited by the need to make sure the designs work well together. The new, fully accessible station will serve new and existing local communities, putting thousands more people within easy walking distance of the Tube network. Journey times to the West End and the City will be reduced to less than 15 minutes. The new station and extension are part of a massive investment programme to transform the Northern line which includes: • A signalling upgrade which has achieved a 20 per cent increase in capacity through central London • 24 hour Tube service on Fridays and Saturdays from September 2015 • Rebuilding or plans to rebuild Tube stations that are critical to improving capacity and regeneration. Planted and landscaped public realm and outside space are central to the overall design of the project providing over 40 per cent of site area. A new public square will be a substantial benefit to the area for existing and new communities. The public square is approximately 20,000 sq ft and will create a new high quality space that will help to create a new and vibrant community next to the station. The public realm will provide spaces for people to meet and spend leisure time. We plan to create a space for the community to encourage activity and diversity, as people meet, talk and spend time together. Historically, the railways always had a strong presence in Nine Elms, being the main reason the area developed and grew. The old railway station opened in 1838, and became a landmark for the Nine Elms area lasting 100 years. It helped to stimulate development in the area, and provide the community with better connection to greater London. Today the Northern Line extension is one of the key catalysts promoting the regeneration of Nine Elms, bringing a new life and new opportunities to the area. Rail track influence Through the design of the new open space we aim to celebrate the historical and future importance of the railways, while responding to local context and user experience. It is proposed that the influence of the historical railway line is reflected on the paving, seating, lighting and art-work.
