Cooperative Education
Cooperative Education/Internships: Both of these programs are a great option for students who are interested in
obtaining career-related training. Students will have the opportunity to carefully examine their career choices
through practical work experience. In addition, academic credit will be awarded at the end of the semester. Why
not build your resume while you earn your degree? Are you already working in a position that is related to your
academic major? If so, it may be possible for you to earn academic credit. Please stop by or call and schedule an
appointment for more information.
Below are some important benefits that have been noted by the National Commission for Cooperative Education:
http://schoolgrantsfor.com/national-commission-cooperative-education.html
Student Benefits
Enhances classroom learning by integrating academic curriculum and real-world work experience.
Confirms or redirects career decision-making through on-the-job experience in a chosen field.
Improves job opportunities after graduation by giving students valuable work experience and contact with
potential future employers.
Employer Benefits
Provides an excellent pool of well-prepared employees.
Increases retention rates among permanent employees recruited and hired through a co-op program. Both
students and employers have the time to try out the position and ensure the fit is the most productive and
effective for both.
Strengthens company relations with colleges and students. Through evaluations, advisory boards and other
means, employers can work with colleges to ensure an effective curriculum.
College and University Benefits
Expands the range of educational opportunities for students by integrating learning at the workplace into the
academic program.
Builds a positive relationship between the institution and the local business community.
Enhances public support for higher education by improving the post-graduation career opportunities for
students. Policymakers increasingly request demonstrated outcomes for students, and co-op can enhance
the quality and level of employment results for graduates.
