Starting in the range £16,476 to £17,544
Pension:
A contributory pension scheme is available. Contribution
rates are 7% of salary from the employer and 3% from
the employee.
Hours of work:
40 hours per week, as directed by the Senior Warden, to
meet customer and operational requirements, to include
evening and weekend work
Time off in lieu of additional hours worked may be taken
by prior arrangement with the Senior Warden. No
additional payments are made in respect of overtime
Location:
Fordell Firs National Scout Activity Centre, Hillend,
Dunfermline, Fife
Holiday:
22 days per annum, rising by 1 day per year of service to
a maximum of 27 days, plus 9 statutory holidays (or
equivalent)

No direct subordinates, but will have supervisory duties with respect to
other staff/seasonal staff/volunteers involved in aspects of site
maintenance
Works in close cooperation with

Volunteer Staff including Fordell Firs Scout Active Support Unit
Other Scouts Scotland staff and volunteers

Task Summary:
 to support the Centre Senior Warden in the operation of the Centre,
with particular responsibility for buildings and grounds maintenance
and site services
 with respect to all aspects of maintenance and site service functions,
ensure that the Centre meets the standards required under general
Health and Safety legislation
 to take responsibility for overseeing the upkeep of the fabric of the
Centre, including the Scouts Scotland headquarters premises
Main Activities:
 ensures a high standard of maintenance of all buildings, grounds and
related site services, to reflect positively on Fordell Firs as a flagship
National Activity Centre and a window on Scouts Scotland
 in co-operation with housekeeping staff ensures that accommodation
units are maintained to a high standard
 ensures camping grounds are maintained to a high standard
 in co-operation with the Centre Senior Warden and others as
appropriate provides out of hours cover to respond to emergencies and
other customer needs
 supports the Centre Senior Warden in the production of reports as
appropriate
 fosters good relations with volunteer staff, including members of Scout
Active Support, to secure a support resource for the general
maintenance and upkeep of the Centre
 carries out such tasks which may be necessary from time to time to
support Centre operations and to foster and maintain a positive image
for Fordell Firs National Activity Centre and Scouts Scotland

Person Specification
Essentials:

A commitment to the aims and methods of the Scout Association

Ability to empathise with young people and adults

General grounds and property maintenance skills, to include some or all of:
basic plumbing skills – e.g. leaks/blockages/fitting new appliances;
basic joinery skills - e.g. repairing or fitting new doors/locks/windows/latches
tiling walls/grouting/shower seals
decorating/plastering/painting and varnishing
exterior repairs – e.g. gutters/fencing/grounds keeping
grounds maintenance skills – e.g. ride-on grass cutting, strimming, brashing and
gardening

A ‘can do’ attitude with a hands on approach

Experience relevant to H & S / risk assessment / operational procedures

Good communication skills

A current driving licence

A willingness to work unsociable hours as site operations dictate

A good eye for safety
Desirable:
 Qualified fork-lift operator
 Competence in portable appliance testing
 Experience / understanding of AALA requirements
 Outdoor activity skills
 Good administrative & planning skills
 Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

 Previous experience of (Scout) activity centre / campsite operations
