CRC’s Commencement Exercises will be on May 16, 2015 at 11:00AM at the Hillcrest Church of Christ next door to campus. Emmett Floyd Smith III will deliver the Commencement Address. CRC officials thought it appropriate to invite the son of our Founder, Emmett Floyd Smith, Jr. to Ken Hoppe deliver the Commencement President Address in the College’s 50th Anniversary Year. Twenty-six students will receive their diplomas after having successfully completed their degree requirements in one of CRC’s six degree programs. CRC’s 50th year, the 2014-2015 academic year has been an extremely busy year, not only with special events tied to the celebration of our 50th year, but with a full schedule of classes, athletic events, chapel services, visits by prospective students, and many other campus activities that occur throughout the year. CRC posted a record enrollment for the fall semester of 2014 and then also posted a record spring 2015 enrollment! More and more students are attracted to CRC as programs continue to be added and the College’s influence is broadened and expanded. The Mission of CRC is to promote Academic and Spiritual Growth and this is why we exist. Seeing our students grow academically, spiritually, and socially, gives us much resolve as we gladly serve in this worthwhile ministry. CRC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration took place on October 4, 2014 with over 500 guests in attendance. Activities included a performance by the reunion chorus, campus tours, an open reception, recognition of special groups and individuals, and an address by Landon Saunders, a former Chairman of CRC’s Board. Early in the evening a donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, presented a $10,000 gift in recognition of our 50th Anniversary! The donor is a special friend of CRC and has made other substantial gifts to the College over the years. Another wonderful blessing occurred at the conclusion of the 50th Anniversary Celebration evening’s activities when a Special Gift was presented to CRC Page 2 by Owen and Wanda Jo Moseley on behalf of the Joe A. and Wanda H. Johnson Trust in the amount of $487,500. This trust resulted from the estate planning of Wanda Jo’s parents, Joe and Wanda Johnson. Joe passed from this life on September 21, 2013 and then Wanda on March 3, 2014. They were married for 74 years! Joe and Wanda began supporting CRC as members of “The President’s Circle” in 2007. The Johnsons understood why CRC needed supporters in this special annual giving program of $1,000 a year. Their interest in the College began to grow in the months and years to follow. The next year, Joe and Wanda set up an automatic draft to make certain they met this annual giving pledge each year. Joe and Wanda, after touring the campus in 2010, agreed to make a larger gift that enabled the building of a new facility, the Joe A. and Wanda Hall Johnson Honor Housing complex for additional student housing. They also gave another gift at this same time to establish the Joe A. and Wanda Hall Johnson Endowed Academic Scholarship Fund to help our students better afford a college education. Joe and Wanda added to their Scholarship Fund every month that followed until their passing. We are so thankful for Joe and Wanda’s friendship and for their very generous support during their lives and also through their estate. Their legacy has allowed CRC to build a new facility for student housing and created an endowed scholarship fund that will continue to help our students in the future. The board of trustees, our staff, and I hope others will follow the example of Joe and Wanda in supporting CRC. Such support is critical to CRC in our strategic planning for the next 50 years. We are extremely grateful to each of CRC generous supporters who continue to provide valuable financial assistance to help in serving our students. CRC has enjoyed many successes over the last decade, including record enrollments, financial stability, expansion to a Baccalaureate Degree granting institution and continuation of the College’s Accreditation through multiple processes with the next Higher Learning Commission Comprehensive Evaluation Visit for the Reaffirmation of our Accreditation to be in 2024. As of last year, 189 congregations have participated in CRC DAY. since it began. We could easily break the $80,000 goal if these congregations would help again this year. Is your congregation listed as one of the 189? You can find a listing of them on our website at www.crc.edu. CRC DAY is listed under the “Advancing CRC” drop down menu. As we celebrate our 50th year we look to the future with eager anticipation. We believe this year to be the springboard that propels the institution into the future as we determine better ways to serve our constituency. The CRC Board, administration, faculty and staff are engaged in a strategic planning process that will provide the foundation and shape the future of the institution over the next 10 years and beyond. We believe we are entering a crucial and important phase in the history of CRC. I am convinced that Christian Higher Education is more important now than ever. As Christian influence continues to decline in our nation, institutions of Christian Higher Education will continue to provide the emphasis that is needed to appropriately prepare the next generation for a life of faith and service. CRC will continue to be a beacon representing and promoting Christian values in all that we do and say. May God continue to bless Crowley’s Ridge College. Page 5 Some T.I.P.S. to Consider. . . Talent • Involved • Prayer • Support Perhaps we all can use some tips from time to time. I know CRC can certainly use the kinds of tips mentioned in this article and by using them, you’ll be blessed too! I think you’ll agree that these T.I.P.S. will be a “win, win” - - helping you, while at the same time helping the College to have another successful 50 years! T alent – The “parable of the talents” illustrates extremely well what God expects of us during this temporary, earthly home. We are all given talents; some have excellent voices in speaking or singing. Some are quite talented in speaking to large crowds, while others are much more comfortable in one-on-one conversations. Some are very organized, detailed and responsible; you can always count on them to get the job done. Others enjoy life, love people, however, don’t ask them to work out the details, but they are a natural at motivating others. God expects His children to use their talents during their time here and to use them often. Are you using yours? Crowley’s Ridge College would be a great place to put your talents into action.Your talent and your passion could be just what we need to launch us into the next 50 years! I Richard Johnson Vice President for Advancement nvolved – Having people involved with Crowley’s Ridge College is paramount to our being able to serve students in the best possible way. God has blessed the College with an extremely beautiful “Each of you should campus and we’ve added needed facilities to it along the way. Imagine all the jobs that need to be use whatever gift you done before, during and after college each year. We have an administration building, activities center, have received to serve dormitories, cafeteria, student center, collegiate fields, etc. We need volunteers for all kinds of areas others, as faithful and we need volunteers throughout the year. We need volunteers as bus drivers for sporting events. It’s hard on our coaches to drive the bus, when they need to be focused on other areas during stewards of God’s the bus ride; having someone to drive, especially on a few longer or overnight trips would be a grace in its various tremendous help to them. We need volunteers to help with the books and scoreboards at home forms.” I Peter 4:10 games (free admission!). We need help maintaining our baseball and softball fields. We could also use help with campus mowing, trimming, picking up limbs and with maintaining flower beds. Our 150acre campus is beautiful and keeping it that way requires a lot of work and having extra help would be such a blessing, especially after storms that damage our trees, etc. Cleaning up each summer, getting dorms ready for school to start again, painting, repairing doors, etc. is something our staff does every year. Do you have the ability to do any of these jobs? We’d love to have your help; whether for a few hours, a day a week or a day or two a month. P rayer – The power of prayer . . . prayers for wisdom, to be more righteous, forgiveness, to be more like Jesus and on and on we could go regarding our need for prayers. We solicit your prayers for Crowley’s Ridge College on a daily basis. Please pray for our students. Many come to campus a little apprehensive, they are not sure what to expect. Some are the first in their family to attend college. The majority of our students have a church background, but a good number of them do not. Some come because of our collegiate sports, or our location or the one-on-one attention they can receive. The Christian environment at CRC truly is life changing experience and we want it to be that way for every student enrolled here each year. Please pray for our faculty and staff as we serve at CRC. Pray that our service here helps students’ lives transition successfully into adulthood and this especially means helping them to mature spiritually. We hope that many will become involved in ministry following graduation; serving as elders, deacons, Bible class teachers, missionaries, and that they will have wonderful Christian families and be successful in their communities. S upport – We all need support, no matter our stage of life. We constantly support each other by being a friend to one another or being kind in numerous ways or by giving of our means in a variety of ways. Crowley’s Ridge College would not have celebrated our 50th Anniversary last year without our friends and supporters. As a private, not for profit, Christian higher learning institution, raising support is very critical and something that we work on everyday. CRC is not included in the budget of the state of Arkansas as public universities and colleges are in this state. We must rely on God, and, on our friends and supporters in funding CRC’s annual operational needs and also for major gifts and estate gifts to help with capital projects and endowed scholarships. I hope you’ll look at the variety of funding opportunities that are made available on page ____ of this CRC Insider. We need help funding these projects and we also need spokespersons for CRC. We need people that encourage their congregations to support our Bible program or to participate in CRC Day each year and people that encourage prospective students in high school to attend Crowley’s Ridge College. Encourage them to attend our Discovery Days for Juniors and Seniors each year or to come for a tour of campus and speak to our admissions staff. Having your support in these areas can greatly multiply our success as we work toward our 100th year anniversary. The lighting and flooring will also be upgraded in certain areas. Both the men’s and women’s wings are included in the renovation plan. The renovation project will continue with additional construction work planned for June 2015. Wilson Hall was constructed during 1963-1964. There have been many upgrades and smaller remodeling projects in specific areas through the structure’s 50 year history. Wilson Hall has served thousands of students over the years. The basic structure was built so well, that architects and inspectors all agree that it is solid and able to serve the CRC student population for the next 40 or 50 years. We also strongly agree that it is time for a variety of upgrades in the students living area to match other recent renovations done in the halls and main lobby. Making these improvements will allow CRC to better serve our on campus female and male dormitory students. Plus, this project will greatly enhance our ability to serve high school guests during student recruitment events and should help us to increase our successes in recruiting future students. $187,308 is total cost to renovate the men and women’s sides of Wilson Hall. $76,708 has already been raised toward this project and we are in the process of raising the remaining $110,000 needed to reach the $187,308 goal to complete this much needed renovation project. Member of the Cabinet: It is time to replace all the chest of drawers in Wilson and Winters Halls for our male and female students. These are custom, sturdy, attractive chests that also match interior colors and we saved money by avoiding shipping/ handling. 112 chests @ $225 each = $25,200. New Beds for Wilson & Winters Halls: We have 112 beds in Wilson and Winters Halls that an alumnus recently donated matching head and footboards. All that is needed to complete the full bed set are the side rails to support the mattress. These beds also match the custom made chest of drawers and other interior colors. We found matching side rails for 112 beds @ $65 each = $7,280. Square Foot Club to Concrete Streets and Parking: Beginning this summer, we plan to concrete these areas around CRC’s campus: 1) Five parking areas in front of cafeteria that are now chat and frequently wash with hard rains. 2) Main campus road from Cafeteria to Johnson Honor Housing to Tennis Courts to Winters Hall. 3) Road from Maintenance Shop and RV Park to the Collegiate Baseball and Softball Complex. Total cost for these combined concrete projects = $200,000 at $2.38 per square foot. Which of the above projects will you help with? Each one on this page is needed and each one also helps us serve our students. Will you help us serve our students with a gift today for one of these projects? Will you ask other friends to help? Perhaps you work for a company that will give toward these projects or perhaps your church family will help. During the week of Spring Break (March 13-20), a group of 15 from CRC traveled to Haiti on a mission trip. The team worked with Hope For Haiti’s Children, which celebrates 20 years of serving the children of Haiti under the direction of Ken Bever, president of HFHC and an elder of the Northeast Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was the fourth year in a row that a team from CRC has spent its Spring Break in Haiti. The young people from CRC worked with a children’s home at Thomazeau which is located a few miles out of Port au Prince and with another children’s home at Cazeau, a suburb of Port au Prince. The team conducted a VBS, worked in the garden, and repaired a fence at the compound in Thomazeau. During the worship service at the Thomazeau Church of Christ on Sunday morning, March 15, four precious souls were baptized into Christ. CRC is already planning to return to Haiti during their Spring Break in 2016. CRC Freshman Kelsey Lininger and her new friend in Haiti Crowley’s Ridge College is blessed with a wonderful family of supporters. The next few pages are CRC’s “Honor Roll Listing of Donors” followed by those giving “Memorial & Honor Gifts” for special friends and loved ones. This listing represents gifts from $10 to $487,500 from Aug 28, 2014 through March 31, 2015. We plan to feature an Honor Roll of Donors and Memorial & Honor section in each of our future CRC Insider publications. CRC would not be possible without generous support of those in this listing. Nippy Mangrum 1948-2015 It is with a sad heart that we report that Nippy Mangrum (’68) died in an automobile accident on April 4. He attended CRC from the fall of 1966 through the spring of 1968 before transferring to Harding University. Nippy was especially excited about the upcoming birth of his first grandchild. He loved the Arkansas Razorbacks and had a special bond with Coach Nolan Richardson and Coach Mike Anderson. Nippy was a faithful member of the 7th & Mueller Church of Christ in Paragould. Not only was Nippy an alumnus of CRC, he was a generous donor and volunteer. For the past several years he helped with the annual Holiday Dinner and Auction in December. As the picture shows, he loved life and had a great time at the Auction and made it fun for everyone. Nippy was a former member of the CRC Development Council and volunteer bus driver for the basketball team. He frequently attended athletic contests and other events on the CRC campus and enjoyed eating meals at the Jennie Sue Eubanks Cafeteria on Sundays after morning services. Nippy is survived by his wife, Nancy of Paragould; two daughters, Mimi Jackson of Paragould, and Ali Mangrum or Farmington, Arkansas. He is also survived by one brother, Tim Mangrum of Paragould and one sister, Regina Taylor of Toronto, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnie and Mary Mangrum and one sister, JoAnn Mangrum. A memorial service was held at the 7th & Mueller Church of Christ. Former CRC Academic Dean, Dr. Steve Hoffman, Passes Away We are saddened to hear of Dr. Steve Hoffman’s passing on February 24, 2015 after a courageous three year battle with cancer. He meant so much to us here and we remember, with grateful appreciation, his involvement in our efforts for initial accreditation. Steve served here with us at CRC from 1994-1999 and had continued to communicate with us throughout the past 15 years since he moved back to Oregon. He often communicated by email and was so proud of where we are as an institution today. Please join us as we keep Steve’s family in our prayers.
