21 May 2015
Hello to all Currumbin families,
The term is almost half over and the excitement continues. Please keep yourself up to date on
news and events via the website, QSchools and Facebook.
This week I would like to present two unrelated yet noteworthy current events. Firstly, the
significance of Reconciliation Week and secondly, a brief reflection on NAPLAN.
RECONCILIATION WEEK - National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year
between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the
reconciliation journey - the anniversaries of the successful 1967 Aboriginal Referendum and the
High Court Mabo decision. The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories,
cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the National Reconciliation effort.
May 27 - Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in
our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the
Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and
recognise them in the national census.
3 June, 1992 - The High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally
recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land
- that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land
rights called Native Title.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week in 2015 is It’s time to change it up.
At Currumbin Primary School we are proud of our students and community and who work together
to understand and overcome historical exclusion and end discrimination against Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander people. We share culture, connect with community, and celebrate Indigenous
success at every opportunity.

NAPLAN REFLECTION - On Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May, students in Years 3
and 5 took part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is
commonly known.
Skills that were tested include: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and
Numeracy. These tests were completed at school and are considered just another part of the
curriculum.
It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at
what level students are achieving in Literacy and Numeracy against National Standards and
compared with student peers throughout Australia. Later in the year we will send parents an
individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is
progressing. Enjoy your week.
Yours in Education
