FROM THE PRINCIPAL
HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS
Last week was a wonderful week of celebrations at Darling Heights as we recognised the
importance of Harmony Week to the students of our school. Our Harmony Day assembly
was, once again, a sight to behold and we thank all organisers of this event. We also thank
Parents for allowing their children to participate in their National Dress.
PRINCIPAL/PARENT FORUM
The next of our Forums is this coming Thursday at 2.30pm in the Library Classroom. Agendas will include feedback on our Pre Prep Program as well as suggestions and thoughts on
our current Uniform Policy.
MAYORAL MORNING TEA
This coming Thursday, our School Leaders will attend Morning Tea with the Mayor and
Councillors of the Toowoomba Regional Council. This event is a great opportunity for our
Leaders to mix with Leaders from all Primary Schools in the Toowoomba Regional Area.
Hosted by the Mayor, he and other Councillors welcome the opportunity to talk with those
who hold student leadership positions in our schools.
SAFETY ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS
I would like to draw your attention to the notice from Queensland Police that appears later in
this Cooee. Queensland Police are aware of the traffic issues associated with our school and
will be working in the coming months to ensure safe driver and pedestrian practice.

FREE DRESS DAY
Thursday 26/3/2015 will be a free dress day with funds going to the, “Buy a Bale
Campaign” to help farmers in drought stricken areas feed their stock. If you
would like to dress as a farmer for the day and bring along a gold coin donation
to support our farmers doing it tough, this would be greatly appreciated. If parents or staff wish to make an additional donation, these will be tax deductible.
You may like to go online to www.buyabale.com.au – for more details.
BOOKS FOR VANUATU SCHOOLS
A company in Brisbane is willing to box up books which they will send to schools in Vanuatu
which have been destroyed by Cyclone Pam. Our Teacher-Librarian network is organising to
collect boxes of books. If your family has any books which you would like to donate, please
bring them to the marked plastic tub in the office foyer.

FROM THE QUEENSLAND POLICE
Traffic issues at the front of the School
Hi, my name is Constable Sam MCDONALD from the Toowoomba Police Station. I am writing to the parents, students, teachers and the wider school community of Darling Heights State School in light of some
recent traffic related issues.
It has come to the attention of Drayton and Toowoomba Police Stations that numerous avoidable traffic
crashes are occurring around the Darling Heights State School area. A number of crashes have occurred in
and around the school zone during drop off and pick up times. Apart from the crashes, a significant concern
in the area is various traffic offences that are being committed causing extensive traffic congestion and raising concern for the pedestrians, which includes young children.
We understand that everyone is eager to pick up/drop off their children. However, respecting each other as
a school community and having patience is the key to allowing access to parking and easing congestion during peak times. Some of the main offences about which police have received multiple complaints are; crossing double lines, double parking, failure to use appropriate pedestrian crossings, and the use of timed car
parks being exceeded.
While these offences seem minor in nature, the actions of motorists have been creating unsafe situations
which have the potential to become serious incidents. Police urge all motorists and parents to put first the
safety of their children and co-students.
These offences attract high fines which can be easily avoided with your help. As a school community, drivers
and pedestrians alike can work together to maximise the safety of the students, teachers and parents and
also minimising traffic congestion. Due to the ongoing complaints received by the public, Police will be focusing on the area to ensure safe and effective practices are adhered to.
The Drayton and Toowoomba Police Stations would like to thank you for your cooperation in these issues
within your community.
Constable Sam MCDONALD.
PARENTING IDEAS
Managing Emotions in healthy ways
What training did you get from your parents in managing emotions?
If you are like me, you didn’t get much really constructive help in recognising or regulating feelings.
“Don’t worry! It will all turn out right! ” was about the extent of the emotional management in my house.
I guess that’s why many people automatically default to ineffective ways such as avoidance, denial and straight-up worrying
when difficult emotions emerge.
And then those ineffective strategies are passed on to children.
Sometimes, it’s a matter of finding better ways of dealing with negative feelings rather than avoiding them, or allowing them to
overwhelm us or act out.
Here are 3 healthy ways to manage your emotions that you can pass on to your children:
1. Breathe deeply
The trick here is to take deep breaths, rather than shallow breaths. The easiest way to breathe deeply is to sit up straight (or
stand up straight), count to 3 quietly while breathing through your nose, and count to 5 while breathing out. Breathe slowly and
deeply. You may even feel a little ‘heady’, which indicates deep (and low) breathing.
2. Use positive, REALISTIC self-talk
Ever talked yourself out of doing something exciting, new or challenging before you’ve even started? Maybe you’ve said something like: “I’ll never be able to do that.” “This will stress me out big time.” “I’m no good at….” I know I have. Next time you catch
yourself talking yourself or something down, replace the negative with something realistic but more positive. Something like:
“I’ve done it in the past and I survived, so I should be able to do it again.” Repeat this a few times and your emotional state will
shift to a better one.
3. Exercise
Exercise releases endorphins; nature’s feel-good chemical, which will move your mood to a better state. The paradox is that we
often don’t feel like exercising, when we really need it. BUT going for a run, walking the dog or even a playing a game outside
with the kids is the very thing you need to feel better. It’s important that as parents we practise good emotional management
techniques ourselves so we are better placed to pass them on to kids. The upside is that we’ll feel better, make better decisions
and be more effective as parents as well.

HARMONY DAY STUDENT SPEECH
The above speech was delivered by Fizza Hussain at last week’s Harmony
Day Assembly. The fact that she has only been learning English since November is testament not only to her enthusiasm, but to the effectiveness of the
EALD program at DHSS. Fizza is pictured middle to the right.
