VALE Neville Bowron
It is with much sadness that we as a club acknowledge the passing of Neville Bowron. To Dianne and the family
we express our sincere condolences. He will be missed but not forgotten.
I personally enjoyed our many and long conversations over a multitude of subjects and although not a keen
gardener, I was in awe at Neville’s amazing garden. It was a garden of love!!
Although Neville’s health had not been good of late I was continually amazed about Dianne’s tales about
Neville’s latest “drive” in his gopher. It gave him a freedom that he relished. I did have a real good chuckle
however when she mention about Neville’s latest “race” to the shops. Then I was blown away when she
mentioned that Neville was considering making a trip to Bunnings and bringing home his latest purchases on
the gopher.
So the next time I will be at Mid Murray Motorplex and the BBQ is cooking away I will say thanks mate.
To all those who are able Neville’s funeral will be held at Simplicity Funerals at Morphett Vale on Thursday 21st
May at 10:00am

Entry Details
The standard entry fee is $50.00 for Adults and $25.00 for Junior entries. These must be received by the event
Secretary before 1800hrs on Friday 22th May 2015. Final entries received after 1800hrs Friday 22th May 2015
are $75.00 for Adults and $40.00 for Juniors. Entries Close 0930hrs on Sunday 24 th May.
Come N Try
As is now the norm we are offering a Come N Try licence on the day so if you have a mate that is a little bit
keen let them know that for less than $100.00 they can purchase a single event licence, SDCC day membership
and pay their entry fee and they can go racing in their car (or maybe yours!!). Both payments for CAMS licence
and the day membership are deducted off your full licence and your club membership. That’s far better than
layby. What a bargain.
Further event details are available on the club website www.sdcc.asn.au
CANTEEN MANAGER position is STILL VACANT
Those who read the newsletter from cover to cover will already know this but some of you may just have a
glance through you may not be aware. We currently do not have an actual canteen manager, so if you are
interested in helping at any of our events feel free to come and offer your services. They will be appreciated
and if not provide, they will be sorely missed.
Thanks must go to the following people who have done their bit on at least 1 day so far this year. Hopefully I
do not miss any-one as it would be very embarrassing for me. I might not get fed at the next event that I
attend.
So here we go, thank you Niusha Khatibi, Christine Smallacombe, Dianne Wood, Susan Clements, Pat Clements,
Helga Jacobs and Stephanie Broad. The food has been awesome and much appreciated.
Also thanks must go to Wayne Mason for the canteen fit out, it is truly exceptional and apparently there is
more to come. A big fridge has been installed since the last event and there could be a coffee machine in the
wings as well (if not, hint, hint!! I like good coffee).
1986 STATE BANK Discovery Trial Re-run
The organisers of this event sought access to Mid Murray Motorplex as part of the event. It may not have been
part of the original trial route but it most certainly will be included in the re-run. It is anticipated that there will
be need of people to cook breakfast for all competitors on Saturday 15th August. More details will be provided
in upcoming issues of the magazine. If you can assist, your offer would be most graciously accepted.

Dear Southern Districts Car Club supporter
President’s plea for assistance
I must start by saying how humbled I feel to have been chosen as President for 2015 by my fellow
club members. Thankyou, I will uphold the role with the respect it deserves, and will endeavour to do
my best to continue to facilitate the exciting journey Southern Districts Car Club has been on. Over
the previous 18 months, our club has made the massive leap from our rented 800 metre track at
Lanac Park, to our very own patch of dirt at Mid Murray MotorPlex, where we currently have around
20km of tracks.
It was certainly a big step, and at times a scary one, but we now have the ability to build our dream.
Having only had the property just on a year now, she is still in her very early stages, but we have
progressed rapidly in such a short time frame. I sincerely thank each and every one you who has
assisted to get us here. Each and every one a volunteer, who have all stepped up and offered their
assistance in whatever way they could, when required. We wouldn’t be here without you.
I must also thank the many and varied competitors from both SA and interstate who have attended the
SDCC and UME events over the past years, and especially the previous 12 months, which was very
much a make or break time for the club. Without your support at our events, we also wouldn’t be here
today.
To the many volunteers who help set up, run, and pack up each event: you are the glue that holds
everything together, and we all thank you for coming out to the events you do, in order for the
competitors to be able to rip skids, legally and safely!
To get to where we are today not only took a massive effort in time and labour, we also spent every
cent we had. And took out a mortgage over 10 years. 9 to go then she’s all ours! Our aim until then is
to watch our spending, honour our repayments, continue to upgrade our facilities year by year, and, of
course, run great events!
However, we are at a critical point for the club. Our long suffering, and frankly, undersized and
underpowered, grader has given up the ghost. She struggled with 800m of sand at Lanac, so as you
can imagine, she isn’t having much fun over 20km at MMM. John Bell, our mechanic extraordinaire,
has done a magnificent job in resurrecting her time after time, but we fear this may be the last time we
can patch her back together. Spare parts for her do not exist anymore. Second hand parts are
becoming increasingly rarer.
Now here is our problem. Without a grader, maintaining roads is so much harder, let alone creating
new ones. Without maintained roads, we can’t run great events. Without great events, we’ll never be
able to save to afford a replacement grader. And we’ll need 10 years to save the money we need to
buy a decent second hand grader.
We can manage in the short term, but not long term. The sooner we can get hold of a decent grader,
the better.
And to do that we need cash. Which we don’t have. So here we are: a desperate plea for your
monetary help please by way of a Tax Deductable Donation through the Australian Sports Foundation
(where 100% of your donation will flow back to SDCC).
Every contribution will be gratefully received, every bit is appreciated and will get us closer to our goal.
Please dig deep, so SDCC can continue to provide quality events to the motorsport community from
club level to national level, from Motorkhanas and KhanaCrosses, to Rally Sprints and Rallies, and the
tarmac playing fields of OZGymkhana, Mt Alma and Willunga Hill, run in conjunction with UME.
Thanking you in advance for your support, and on behalf of SDCC, let’s continue to push to create a
bright future for South Australian motorsport.
Damian Reed
President SDCC
PS: If anyone knows anyone who knows where a good, and cheap, grader is for sale, give us a shout!
Southern Districts Car Club would like to acknowledge the donations
made last month to Mid Murray Motorsport Park through the Australian
Sports Foundation

Just like most of you I am yet to make my donation for this tax year but I can assure you
I WILL MAKE MINE later this month, so my name will be on the list in the next edition.

VIAGRA’S THIRD MOUNT ALMA
Driving the incredible 6.5 litre V8-powered 4WD Datsun 260Z known as “Viagra”, Portland’s
Kevin Mackrell has taken his third win in the Willall Pilatus Mt. Alma Mile Hillclimb on March 28-29
after a dramatic weekend.
Held on a very steep closed public road in Inman Valley, near Victor Harbor, the seventh
running of Mt. Alma attracted a capacity field of 160 competitors.
Unlike most Australian hillclimbs which count only the fastest run, this event has all five runs
counting, with the top 12 in the 4 and 2 wheel drive categories then taking part in a shootout, getting
down to the top three in the end.
Both Mackrell and main opposition Kevin Weeks’ turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo
Superlegerra hit penalty markers (one for Mackrell and two for Weeks) on Saturday, leaving Old
Willunga Hillclimb winner Nick Streckeisen’s Nissan GTR R35 leading from Mark Rundle’s Mitsubishi
EVO VIII by 1.24 seconds, Mackrell by 2.12 and Julian Newton’s Nissan GTR R35 by 2.82 at the end
of the first day. Weeks was a lowly 18th, 9.96 seconds behind Streckeisen.
First 2WD at the end of the day was Glenn Latter’s Mazda RX7 in 13th outright, followed by
Clinton Faustmann’s RX3, Peter Mayer’s Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Chris Edmonson’s Nissan 180SX.
Mackrell did a blinding 39.68 second time on Sunday’s final official run (just short of his record
of 39.444) to grab the lead from Streckeisen, Rundle, Weeks, and John Beasley (Mitsubishi EVO IV),
both outright and in 4WD. Glen Latter (Mazda RX7) led the 2WDs from Chris Edmondson (Nissan
180SX), Clinton Faustmann (Mazda RX3), Kurt Krassnitzer (Pro Sport Mulsanne) and Nate Dale
(Nissan R32 GTS).
Jake “Driftsquid” Jones, as usual the event’s most spectacular driver, had his Nissan Sonvia’s
harmonic balancer shatter not long after the start on the final run, putting him out. He apologised to the
crowd.
Julian Newton, in the sister R35 to Streckeisen’s, sat in sixth, despite the a front clutch problem
which saw the Nissan intermittently dropping from 4WD to 2WD throughout both days.
In the shootout the competitors dropped like flies. Port Adelaide Carrera winner Craig Van
Diemen spun spectacularly, taking out the chicane, whilst the other EVOs of Shane Carroll and John
Beasley broke their diffs on the start line, with Dryden McDonald’s example jamming in gear soon after
the start. Beasley’s son Henry, sharing the same car, had also made it through to the shootout in
eighth, the poor EVO eventually showing the strain.
As Nick Streckeisen’s launch control faltered and he nearly stalled in the final three shootout he
must have thought that it was all over, but worse was to happen to Weeks when the Lamborghini
suffered gearbox problems before he reached the first corner.
He continued on, finishing his run some 30 seconds off the pace, so Mackrell simply needed to
outpace the other two to win.
However, he didn’t settle for that, going for broke with a time of 39.96, the second fastest time
of the weekend.
There was quite a turnaround in the 2WD results, Dean King’s Mazda Rotary-powered Austin
Healey Sprite just edging out Chris Edmonson’s 180SX and Daniel Prior’s Nissan Silvia for the win.
John Lemm
The above article just missed the last issue of Southern Comfort, the electrons passed each
other in the Ethernet, thanks John for a concise update of the event.

Magazine Advertising
Thanks to the efforts of Dianne Wood we now have a Magazine Editor who wants to provide monthly
magazines for the membership of Southern Districts Car Club.
To follow on from that at the recent General Meeting it was decided that SDCC would pursue
advertising revenue for the magazine and also the club website www//sdcc.asn.au.
From the reports of website use provided by Mick Workman to the General Meetings it is indicated
that we are averaging over 4,000 hits per month and both the facebook and blog are increasing every
month.
So if you know of a business that would be interested in advertising at Southern Districts Car Club
either contact them directly or refer them to any of the committee members.
The general guidelines are listed below
The advertiser must supply the advertisement and SDCC must approve it.
Also I suggest encouraging the advertisers to offer some sort of small discount to club
members.
Although it is a reasonable increase the prices were from a few years ago and I suspect were
set well before that.
 If only 300 people read the mag 12 times a year a full page add is less than 4 cents per
hit.
Magazine advertising charges are as follows:

Editor’s report
Dianne asked if I could produce this month’s magazine on her behalf, so I hope that you enjoy it. If it lacks a
little something this month, it could be your event report. So send it through to Dianne via
[email protected]
As requested by our President, Damian Reed the publish date has been moved to a couple of days after the
General Meeting. The logic is that with facebook and the other technological advances using the magazine as a
reminder of the General Meeting is no longer required. What is more relevant is minutes fresh from the
general meeting with current information for you the membership.
