Deerfield’s late offensive explosion leads to win Game 2—Friday, March 20, 2015 vs. Vernon Hills Cougars The JV Lady Warriors exploded for two goals in less than 5 minutes time late in their tight, dead locked game vs. Vernon Hills Friday night under the lights at Rust-O-Leum field in Vernon Hills and came away with their second straight win of the week. Deerfield tallied first in the 25 th minute when a Karley Morris punt found the foot of striker Chloe Cappas who calmly controlled the ball and blew by several Cougar defenders and buried the shot on frame for a 1-0 early lead. The score stood until halftime, but somehow there was an eerie feeling that Deerfield did not take advantage of the wind at their backs and might pay for it. Sure enough, minutes into the 2nd half with the wind at the Cougars’ back, an injury at the top of the box, led to an indirect free kick for Vernon Hills. Goalkeeper Maddie Ofner stopped the initial shot but it bobbled away to a Cougar player who easily finished it for the equalizer. Until the final ten minutes, the game was choppy and the Warriors struggled to put possession together and it appeared at times we were intimidated by the bigger, more aggressive Vernon Hills players. The end of the game, however, was a different story. It got started with just over 3 minutes remaining, defender Riley Halpern send a ball over the top to a wide open Chloe Cappas who deftly converted for her 2 nd goal of the game. Less than a minute later, Haley Emory found the foot of Carrie Donovan who one timed a shot on frame that trickled by the outstretched hands of the Cougar goalkeeper into the back of the net. Deerfield must and can play much better as the season goes on. Deerfield will host Northside Prep on Saturday to conclude a busy week in soccer.
