Beyond Sustainability: An Introduction to Permaculture Design

Class will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until approximately 3:30
There will be a break for lunch from noon until 12:30. Participants will provide their
own lunch and beverages.

Course Content: This will be an introduction to permaculture design, a whole
systems approach to designing sustainable, regenerative systems that support humanity
and the broader community of life that surrounds us.

The State of the World Address or Why permaculture is needed
The ethics and principles of permaculture designed
Basic permaculture concepts
Permaculture design examples
Farm tour and discussion of recent permaculture design for the dairy.
What to Bring: This class is being held on a working dairy farm inside a barn. Please
dress in clothes that you do not mind getting dirty in and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes
or boots for the farm tour. Please bring a chair to sit on (and extra chairs if you have
them). Note taking is encouraged! You may also record the lecture portion to listen to
later. All participants must provide their own lunch and beverages. Bring plenty of water
to drink. We'll be here for several hours.
What to Expect: This course often challenges our fundamental societal and personal
beliefs. It can often elicit a wide range of emotions in participants who take it. You can
expect to be challenged to see in a new way and be encouraged by the possibilities to
restore ecosystems and communities by living with nature rather than against it.
Course Instructor
Dillon Naber Cruz is a certified Permaculture Designer and educator currently
residing in Lancaster, PA. He received his Permaculture Design Certificate
(PDC) from the Ecovillage Training Center in Summertown, TN and his
Advanced PDC in Permaculture Teaching from Cascadia Permaculture held in
Arcosanti, AZ. Dillon recently completed an Advanced Permaculture Design Practicum
through Oregon State University. His experience in permaculture has taken him from
Lancaster County, PA to the Big Island of Hawai’i. He has designed home scale gardens,
hugulkultur beds, and a one acre fruit and vegetable farm featuring passive on-contour
irrigation, mixed polyculture plantings and nitrogen fixing ground covers to build soil
fertility. His most recent design was for Fiddle Creek Dairy in Quarryville, PA. As a
teacher he has led two PDC’s, one in Lancaster, PA and one in North Kohala, HI as well
as teaching interns organic gardening and permaculture. Dillon is an avid student of
permaculture, bioregionalism, and ecology. He can often be found hiking in the woods
with his wife, Christina Cruz, taking photos of animals, plants and fungi. Dillon
maintains a permaculture related blog entitled: Livin’ the Domestic Life, Permaculture
Style.
