A Message
to Our Loyal
Supporters
In 2014 we had the honor of celebrating
60 years of community service. We can
all feel proud of a rich heritage built on the
work of many thousands of people over the
years who contributed their time, energy and
resources to help make our organization successful
for so long.
Today, transformative changes are taking place within the healthcare
industry that directly impact transfusion medicine, and more directly the blood banks that provide
lifesaving products and services to communities across the country. Changes in medical practices,
procurement and demand for products, pricing and reimbursements are just a few of the challenges
of this new environment.
On a local level, we at Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) continue working diligently to improve upon
every aspect of how we deliver on our mission of ensuring a safe and adequate supply of blood and
blood products to those in need.
The past year we have intensified the focus and drive towards our aspirational goals of being a
Best-in-Class Blood Bank and Community Partner. This means ongoing innovation and investment in
new technologies and products that improve our internal operations and enhance patient safety.
Examples include being the first blood bank in the country to receive an FDA license for INTERSOL®,
a product that helps reduce the risk of patient reactions following platelet transfusions. More recently
we began implementation of another new product innovation, INTERCEPT® to further enhance the
safety of platelets and plasma products. Along with enhancing patient safety, we continue to make
major upgrades and improvements to our enterprise blood management system (BECS): laboratory
equipment, including a new high-speed track system for processing and testing blood samples.
In addition to the ongoing focus on patient safety and internal operations, we have been busy in a
number of other areas including opening a new donor center in Chadds Ford, PA, introducing our
Members for Life program, strengthening our internal leadership team, and most importantly, growing
our customer and service base.
As you review this report, we ask that you also take a moment to reflect upon and appreciate the
many individuals who work tirelessly to help improve the health and well-being of our organization
and community. It is through their stories, contributions and your support, that more than 20,000
patients in our region benefitted from blood and blood products last year.

Blood Bank of Delmarva observed its 60th Anniversary
in 2014. A gala celebration was held to honor those past and
present who have contributed to BBD’s success. It included personal stories of
blood recipients and blood donors highlighting the Blood Bank’s collective efforts
of donors, employees and volunteers who contribute to the lives of others. It also
helped reinforce the motivation and resolve to be engaged and connected to
the important act of blood donation because it literally helps save lives.

new Donor Center
in Pennsylvania
Blood Bank of Delmarva’s newest permanent
donor center (Blood Bank of Delmarva Concord
Center) opened for business in December. The
center is housed in the Christiana Care Concord
Health Center on Wilmington-West Chester Pike in
Chadds Ford, PA. Donors who previously donated at
the Talleyville (DE) mobile are now happy to come
to the new location to donate.
The donor center is located on the second floor of the Health
Center. It has ten donor chairs. Currently whole blood is being
collected, but as the donor base is developed, the Blood Bank will
implement automated donation for double red cell and platelet donations.
The center is open Monday through Friday.
BBD Dover Center receives
license approval for PAS platelets
Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) has received licensure approval for INTERSOL® Platelet Additive
Solution platelets for its Dover Donor Center. BBD is the first blood center to receive the PAS
platelet license application approval.
Data from current studies shows that transfusions of PAS platelets cut the risk of transfusionrelated reactions in half.
The PAS platelet license approval was issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), the regulatory agency for all blood centers that operate in the United States.

Dedicated Student
Answers the Call
Talk about dedication and sacrifice! This Penn State
student demonstrates this in a very special way. Amanda
Strange is like many typical college students, that is, if typical
means a double major who also works a full-time job, to
put herself through school. And did we mention she is a
blood donor who truly understands the importance of
giving blood? She exemplifies that giving spirit. Last
semester, during the midst of two exams and multiple
projects, Amanda traveled five hours from campus
in order to give blood at the Blood Bank’s Christiana
Center. “You needed me,” she said. It’s just that
simple. Thank you, Amanda. You are a true hero.

Matthew’s Story
Lymphoma diagnosis changes young man’s life
In December 2002, 20-year-old Matthew Jenkins
felt a lump on his neck, but he wasn’t too concerned.
“That was a Saturday,” he said. “I didn’t feel it the day
before, but it was about the size of a walnut.”
That Monday, Matthew went to his physician, who prescribed an
antibiotic and told him to keep an eye on it for a month. At the time, Matthew was
a University of Delaware student headed to Italy for a month-long study abroad
session. By the end of his trip, the lump had grown to the size of a softball.
“I knew something was wrong. I had no jawline.”
A biopsy back in the States on February 6 confirmed he had Burkitt’s
Lymphoma, a rare form of lymphoma affecting only about 100 Americans
each year. This aggressive form of cancer spreads so quickly, it had already
moved into his liver and chest cavity. Immediate treatment was necessary;
Matthew began his first round of chemotherapy just four days later.
Throughout the course of his treatment, Matthew needed 71 units of
blood. During this short time, he suffered several complications,
including an emergency appendectomy and five other
surgeries which also required blood transfusions. He was
also neutropenic, which occurs when there is an
abnormally low white blood cell count, causing his
platelets and red cells to be low as well. In July,
he was given the all-clear: all diagnostic tests
showed the cancer was gone.
Now, 12 years later, Matthew sees his physician
annually for check-ups, but is confident that early
treatment has caused him to have no greater risk
for cancer than anyone else. Originally fearful
he’d be unable to have children because of the
chemotherapy, he and his wife are the proud
parents of a two-year-old girl.
“My parents had been Blood Bank members
for many years, donating blood and
platelets before, during and after my
treatment,” Matthew said. “I was at death’s
door, and blood from the Blood Bank of
Delmarva saved my life.”

Summary
of Activities
Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD)
continues to aggressively move
forward on strategic projects.
Operations
Transformation and Sustainability
• BBD received its FDA license for the Platelet
Additive Solution (PAS) technology that
improves patient safety by reducing the risk
of transfusion reactions. It is the first blood
bank in the country to obtain a license for
this product.
• BBD is currently engaged in two new exciting
innovation projects:
• On December 1, BBD officially opened its new donor
collection center on Route 202 in Chadds Ford, PA.
This will help to optimize collections in the North
Wilmington/Chadds Ford area.
• On December 16, BBD began its first-ever clinical trial;
testing a technology that may ultimately be used by
a branch of the U.S. government.
• BBD added Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia as a
new customer, testing donor collection samples.
• As part of the Friends for Life (FFL) program, to date,
fundraising efforts have resulted in a combination of
actual donations or pledges totaling over $700K.
1)
Leveraging the newly-licensed PAS product
(for platelet production). Discussions are underway
with an organization to support development of
a new product for platelets and plasma that further
enhances transfusion safety and creates additional
revenue opportunities.
2)Testing and validation of a completely new
technology for shipping of blood products (at
constant temperature) which will save on current
expenses, and reduce product waste.
In summary, BBD will continue its aggressive approach
of expense management, closing new business
opportunities to drive revenue growth, and leveraging
partnerships that enhance BBD’s long-term performance
and sustainability.

Winners Honored
The 2014 Summer Blood Challenge
had 241 participating companies
and organizations and 11,333 total
donation points.
Thank you to everyone who gave
blood or platelets and encouraged
others to do so.
Thank You Fusion Fitness!
Fusion Fitness Center in Newark (DE) cares about its community and proved it with a generous donation to Blood Bank
of Delmarva.
Two teams, Gray Team and Black Team, competed in a 27-day fitness challenge that included weekly team
challenges. A portion of the proceeds from each entry fee was donated to Blood Bank of Delmarva, resulting in a
$1000 gift.
“The individuals who participate in these fitness challenges are men and women of all ages, sizes and fitness levels.
We want them to find this challenging, but fun at the same time,” said Nic DeCaire, owner of Fusion Fitness Center.
“In addition, as a local business, we always try to be great community partners. Blood Bank of Delmarva is a fantastic
non-profit that truly affects everyone in our local community. So we are pleased to give them $20 from each entry fee
for the fitness challenge.”
“We are grateful to Fusion Fitness Center for
choosing Blood Bank of Delmarva as the
first beneficiary of its fitness challenge,”
Roy Roper, Blood Bank of Delmarva
President & CEO, said. “We always
encourage our blood donors to live
active lifestyles and this partnership with
a local business is a great fit.”

Technology
and Growth
Blood Bank of Delmarva is committed to being a
best-in-class Blood Bank that provides customers and
patients with the safest blood and blood products available.
With this in mind, we are constantly looking for the most efficient,
state-of-the-art instrumentation and testing protocols. This means
focusing on long-term sustainability by investing in new technology,
particularly in the laboratory testing operation.
Having top-notch technology supports our overall growth strategy.
This past year we added two major new testing and service clients:
Dimensions Health System in Maryland and Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank. These two major customers, along with
other clients being added, have greatly supported our overall long-term growth and plans for sustaining BBD’s ability to
serve the community for years to come.
School Blood Drive Season Yielding
Enthusiastic Student Blood Donors
The 2014-2015 school blood drive season has exceeded expectations.
Indications are that this will be a record-breaking year for high schools and
colleges on Delmarva. Kudos is extended to the students and administrators
for their hard work and dedication on behalf of patients in their communities.
The students make this project theirs by recruiting donors, promoting their
school drives, and providing volunteer assistance on the day of the blood
drive. It is because of their dedication and enthusiasm that the blood drive
season is such a success, accounting for close to 12% of the local blood supply.
Thank You Rotarians!
Roy Roper, President and CEO, recently gave
a presentation at the Christiana Rotary Club.
Roy is shown with club president, Bobbie
Brooks, who presented a $500 check to BBD
for the school blood drive program.

The 300 Club Gets Bigger
Mary Lee MacKelcan and James Guldner are the latest members
of a very small but special club at Blood Bank of Delmarva. Each
was recently honored for their 300th platelet donation. Thank you
to them for their continued diligence and support on behalf of
cancer and leukemia patients in our community.

UD Captures CAA Win
for Fourth Consecutive Year
Blood Bank staff partnered again with the University of Delaware to
pull out another successful and winning CAA Blood Challenge —
for the fourth consecutive year. The victory was also the eighth
for UD overall, with an impressive 813 registered donors.
The CAA Blood Challenge has grown since its inception in
2002. Each year, UD enters into the enthusiastic competition
with the other schools in the Colonial Athletic Association
to recruit the most blood donors in a single day.
Congratulations, Blue Hens!
